Pack smart for the Australian Outback

Apr 15, 2016 by The Go Ahead Tours Team

In our eyes, it isn’t a proper trip to Australia if you don’t explore parts of the Outback. From Ayers Rock to Alice Springs, there’s much to see in this desert region that comprises most of the interior of the country. It’s wild, it’s isolated—and it can be extreme. So, how should you prepare for this somewhat rugged adventure?

While you’re not expected to outfit yourself like Crocodile Dundee, it’s best to pack with purpose. You might be surprised to know what could come in handy! Here, our perfect packing list for a trip to the Australian Outback.

Packing tips for the Australian outback

1

Cleansing wipes

Can anyone say dust? Red dust—the Northern Territory isn’t called the Red Center for nothing. Its iconic reddish glow is due to oxidized iron in the soil. Keep a travel pack of these cleansing wipes in your pocket and you’ll be glad you did.

2

Sun protection

We’re not just talking SPF 50+, which we absolutely recommend (and a lot of it!). Wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective clothing are smart choices when you’re facing cloudless skies and temperatures of almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re someone who thinks they never burn, think again!

3

Insect repellent

You can probably skip packing this item and just buy on arrival, but nevertheless, don’t go without. It can be buggy in the Outback, and you’ll be happy you’re taking in the gorgeous surroundings rather than desperately swatting away flies.

4

Layered clothing

Lightweight, breathable clothing you can layer at ease is just as important as sun protection when you’re visiting the Australian Outback. Though it does get extremely hot during the days, you may, in fact, find yourself shivering under a blanket at night. Lightweight sweatshirts and jackets are the way to go.

5

Sunglasses

The last thing you want is to be blinded while eyeing Ayers rock or trying to take that perfect photo. Sunglasses are a vital item to have, not only in the Outback, but throughout all of Australia. As they’ll be a crucial accessory, we recommend packing a back-up pair—and, of course, don’t forget a cleaning cloth for that pesky dust.

6

Travel-friendly games

The drive from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock is six hours by bus. Unless you’re content with staring out the window for the duration of the ride, we recommend packing something to pass the time. Whether you fancy a good old deck of cards or a rousing game of Apples to Apples, they will certainly come in handy for entertainment purposes, and the rest of your group will thank you! Of course, a good book or some headphones and music will do the trick, too, if you’d like some solo peace and quiet.

7

Refillable water bottle or hydration pack

As the Australian Outback is essentially one big desert, chances are you’re going to get really, really thirsty. You are going to perspire more than you thought possible and therefore will to need to refuel rather frequently. Don’t skimp on your water container.

8

Ask our team

This one goes without saying, but if you feel unprepared or need a second opinion on what to bring, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Customer Experience Team! They have an incredible wealth of knowledge for anything ‘under the sun.’ Once you’re on tour, your Tour Director will be able to answer any questions you have about traveling through the Australian Outback.
