Benefits of multi-generational travel

Jun 10, 2021 by Kara Kramer

Now is the time to make up for missed moments with your family by taking a dream trip, together. Check out the benefits of traveling with family, and hear from traveler Deron on why he loved the time he shared with his grandfather on trips from Paris to Australia.

Create shared memories

We know you want to give the people you love the world. When you plan a family trip together, you can show them the world. The best parts of traveling abroad with family members are the unforgettable memories you create. Explore your heritage by traveling to a destination with family history, or celebrate milestones with your family in a new destination. Experience vibrant cultures and history that can’t be taught in school together. A group tour makes it easy to plan a vacation for a large group and it’s cost-effective, too.

Whether you explore Venice’s historic canals, unwind in the rustic Italian countryside of Tuscany, or discover sun-kissed Greek islands, traveling as a family creates memories that will last a lifetime.

The advantage of traveling with family is gaining quality time you wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to have together, all while experiencing beautiful places around the world. Discovering these incredible places with family makes the destinations that much more precious.

Traveler Deron loved the time he was able to spend one-on-one with his grandfather while traveling. Deron’s grandfather wanted to travel after Deron’s grandmother passed away, but didn’t want to go alone. Deron decided to join him.

Planning a trip is easy

“I was at a point in my life where I was able to take additional time off,” Deron said. “I called my grandfather and told him I got a passport, and to let me know when he wants to go to Paris, and we are going. We ended up booking through Go Ahead Tours for the Paris City Experience and spent 10 days together going all around Paris. To be able to have the time I did, individual time with my grandfather, was priceless.”

Deron and his grandfather didn’t stop there. They ended up traveling to four countries together, becoming the perfect travel duo. “The following year we went to Rome and spent 10 days there using Go Ahead Tours,” said Deron. “We traveled together again the following two years. One of the tours was Iceland, which I fell in love with. I pushed him out of his comfort zone. We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and even went ice climbing in Iceland.”

It brings your family together

“The last trip we went on we spent two weeks in Australia, which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Deron said. Getting to travel is an amazing opportunity. You get to learn about new cultures, experience history, and make new friends. He was a blast to talk to. Hearing all of his stories shaped who I am today.”

The benefit of traveling abroad with family is the priceless time together. Deron’s trips with his grandfather inspired him to spend more time with his family in the future. “My grandfather passed away nearly two years ago from cancer,” Deron said. “I remember all of those trips I spent with him so vividly, and those are moments I will never forget and look forward to sharing with my son and hopefully grandkids someday.”

“All the trips I hold dear to me are special because of the time I had with him. That’s what Go Ahead Tours does, it brings families together,” Deron said. “Enjoy where you’re at, but enjoy the company of who you’re with more.”

Growing up, Kara’s backyard was the Sonoran Desert where her love for exploration was ignited by dirt roads leading to petroglyphs and family road trips to sleepy Mexican fishing villages. Kara’s enjoyment for charting new territory continued with teaching abroad in Thailand, roaming wine cellar caves in Portugal, and swimming in the bioluminescent waters of the Caribbean. She’s always on the lookout for dive bars and a bowl of Vietnamese Pho (lime, basil, and jalapeño is the holy trinity).
