What a wonderful way to kick off my retirement with a tour of Eastern Europe! When my husband and I returned from our recent trip to Eastern Europe and asked each other what we would have changed we both struggled to come up with any ideas.

Tips for planning a trip to Eastern Europe

When is the best time to visit Eastern Europe?

There’s no bad time for an Eastern Europe trip, but we love visiting during the off-season, which is between October and March. Off-season travel comes with many perks, including fewer crowds, special events, more comfortable temperatures, and seasonal cuisine.

Eastern Europe is also known for Christmas markets that are so magical, we have a whole tour centered around them.

What are some common dishes to try in Eastern Europe?

You can learn a lot about a place by trying its foods—and Eastern Europe is no exception. So many travelers say their favorite part of our Eastern Europe tours is tasting all the different foods! Here are some to sample:

  • Croatian Strukli, This popular cheese pastry is soft, melty, creamy, and crisp all at once.
  • Czech Palacinky, Think French crepes, but lighter and sweeter.
  • Austrian Wiener Schnitzel, You’ve probably heard of this breaded, fried veal cutlet dish, but it’s too delicious not to mention.
  • Serbian Cevapcici, These crisp, juicy sausages can be found all over the Balkans.
  • Polish Gołabki, Picture soft cabbage leaves filled with minced meat, swimming in tangy tomato sauce. Now picture eating it.
  • Lithuanian Borscht, This traditional beet soup is definitely the prettiest thing you could possibly eat on any of our Eastern Europe trips.
