Scoping out wildlife is the best part of an African safari. Here’s what Senior Editor Jessie packed in her day bag on her Kenya Wildlife Safari tour to get the most out of each incredible game drive.
1. Sun protection
The African sun is strong, so make sure you wear sunscreen with a high SPF—and if you’re planning on swimming in the ocean, pick up a reef-safe variety. You’ll also want to bring sunglasses and a hat with you in the safari vehicle each day.
2. Binoculars
While you’ll get up close to plenty of wildlife, binoculars are handy for spotting animals in the distance or up in trees. Plus, many parks are also home to beautiful bird species that you’ll want to get a better look at.
3. A camera
If you have a zoom lens, now is the time to use it. If you don’t, you may be able to rent one from a local camera shop so you can capture a cheetah’s spots or the watchful eye of a wildebeest in intricate detail.
4. Light layers
Mornings and evenings in Kenya can be much cooler than the midday heat. I packed a gauzy scarf and a light overshirt to stay warm on early morning game drives as well as keep the sun off my neck and shoulders as the day heated up.
