Get a sneak-peek at the royal wedding in Windsor Castle

Apr 19, 2018 by Jamie Gallerani

If Prince Harry’s upcoming wedding is on your radar, rejoice: You’re cordially invited to check out his and his bride-to-be’s wedding venue while on tour in England! While you’d need to be a VIP to get a spot on the guest list for the ceremony, all you need is a place on our Windsor Castle excursion to see where the big celebration will be going down. Here are some fun facts about the much-anticipated event, and how you can get in on the action.

What to know about the royal wedding

May 19, 2018 will bring with it one of England’s most eagerly awaited occasions: the nuptials of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle. The Archbishop of Canterbury will officiate as the pair exchanges vows inside St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, a venue that’s held countless weddings for the royal family for hundreds of years.

Does the thought of a royal wedding call to mind the elaborate ceremony of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey in 2011? Harry and Meghan’s ceremony will also have its share of pomp and circumstance, but there will only be 800 people in attendance compared to the 2,000 at Westminster. Plus, there’s no balcony for the couple to share a public smooch after saying “I do.”

Reasons to visit Windsor castle

Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor sits distinguished as the world’s largest and longest-inhabited castle. It’s been used as a special retreat for the British Royal Family for over 900 years—and the Queen of England still spends many of her weekends here!

Plus, the residence is filled with priceless treasures, including the world’s largest dolls’ house, built for Queen Mary in the 1920s, and a royal mausoleum where monarchs including King Henry VIII have been laid to rest.

What you’ll see on the Windsor Castle excursion

You’ll have the opportunity to add the Windsor Castle excursion on many of our London tours, and it’s a sure way to make your journey even more memorable. On this can’t-miss excursion, you’ll join a Blue Badge Guide and step inside the State Apartments, where stunning artwork from the British Royal Family’s vast collection covers the walls.

After admiring masterpieces by everyone from Da Vinci to Vermeer, continue on to St. George’s Chapel. It’s here that the Knights of the Garter ceremony takes place—and where Markle herself will be walking down the aisle.

Then, enjoy free time to stroll through the town of Windsor and have a look at Eton College, a prestigious prep school attended by Princes William and Harry.
