Day 2: Arrival in Glasgow
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Scotland! Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Glasgow
Included meal: Breakfast
As one of Scotland’s cultural and creative centers, the former industrial hub of Glasgow more than holds its own against other top sightseeing destinations. Today, you’ll take in its highlights and get to know the Dear Green Place with a local as your guide.
- Visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. First opened in 1870 as Glasgow’s first municipal museum, it features substantial exhibitions of everything from European portraiture to Egyptian antiquities.
- Walk around the statue-dotted George Square, Glasgow’s main public plaza, and admire the craftsmanship of the adjacent City Chambers.
- From there, walk south through the posh Merchant City district to the banks of the Clyde, Scotland’s second-longest river.
- Stop outside the city’s medieval cathedral—the oldest cathedral on the Scottish mainland and the oldest building in all of Glasgow—for photos of its Gothic spires and facades.
This afternoon, opt for a trek northeast through picturesque countryside to visit Stirling Castle. A fixture in the Wars of Scottish Independence, this 12th-century fortress saw the coronation of Mary, Queen of Scots, and still stands proudly atop its rocky perch. If you join the excursion, you’ll also get to visit The Kelpies, a pair of 98-foot-tall steel horses towering over the town of Falkirk.
If you’re staying in Glasgow to explore on your own, stroll back to Merchant Square. Sheltered within Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, this indoor venue is the city’s eating and drinking destination.
Scottish Highlands3 nights
Day 4: Transfer to the Scottish Highlands
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Continue to the Scottish Highlands, admiring incredible sights as you go.
- Drive through The Trossachs, one of Scotland’s two national parks, and pass by Loch Lomond—the largest on the island of Britain by surface area.
- Leave your bus at majestic Inveraray Castle—seat of the Duke of Argyll, leader of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century. Surrounded by gardens, this country estate was one of the first built in the Gothic Revival style, and you’ll get to explore with a local guide leading the way.
- Take in stunning scenery—a patchwork of greens in the summer and golden browns in the fall—as you travel through the Scottish Highlands’ rolling glens. During the heather season of summer and early fall, the mountains often appear blue or purple from a distance.
Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine. Tonight, you’ll settle into your rustic, countryside hotel after a full day of exploring.
Please note: Entrance to Inveraray Castle is seasonal and runs from April through October. When out of season, this stop will be replaced with a visit to the Ardkinglas House—a classy country estate built in the Scots Baronial style on more than 12,000 acres of parkland.
Day 5: Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness & Inverness
Included meal: Breakfast
Continue through the famed Scottish Highlands, stopping along the way to get to know one of Scotland’s most mysterious sites—Loch Ness. Reaching depths of 755 feet, the 23-mile long loch’s dark, peaty waters are often shrouded in fog and mist and prone to sudden waves. Keep your eyes peeled for what might be lurking beneath.
- Stop for a photo at the medieval ruins of Urquhart Castle, a once-great stronghold situated on the shores of Loch Ness. Take in panoramic views of the gash-like lake, whose depths are purportedly home to the mythical Nessie—better known around the world as the Loch Ness Monster.
- Cruise atop the largest loch in the country, enjoying refreshments as you go, before docking in Clansman Harbour and continuing on your way.
- Arrive in Inverness—the Capital of the Highlands and one of Scotland’s eight cities—for some free time to explore the area. Feeling hungry for lunch? Track down some traditional fare, or a uniquely Scottish dish: chicken tikka masala, a now-beloved curry house staple created and first served in Glasgow back in 1971.
Return to your hotel later this evening where you'll have free time to relax and unwind.
Day 6: Free day in the Scottish Highlands
Included meal: Breakfast
If you feel called by rugged scenery and jagged peaks, don’t miss today’s optional journey to the Isle of Skye. You’ll enjoy a full-frame view of the Old Man of Storr, the famous 2,300-foot rock formation, as well as a tour of the colorful harbor village of Portree. You’ll end this fairytale day at Eilean Donan Castle, famous both as a stronghold against Viking raids and for its role in the popular Outlander television series.
If you’re spending the day at your leisure, ask your Tour Director for a recommendation to make the most of your free time in the Scottish Highlands.
Edinburgh3 nights
Day 7: Transfer to Edinburgh
Included meals: Breakfast, Liquor tasting
En route to Edinburgh, stop in Perthshire, a historic county often called the Heart of Scotland. Between sparkling rivers, tranquil lochs, and dense woodland, it’s as enchanting as it is culturally significant.
- Visit medieval Blair Castle, the former home of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Imposing turrets, towers, and battlements in the stark Scottish Baronial style stand against a backdrop of manicured gardens and wooded countryside.
- Stop by one of the area’s whisky distilleries with a guide and enjoy a tasting. Scotch is one of Scotland’s most significant exports, and you don’t have to imbibe to appreciate the heritage and craftsmanship that goes into the spirit’s production.
Please note: Entrance to Blair Castle is seasonal and runs from April to late October only. When entrance is out of season, it will be replaced with a visit to The Black Watch Castle & Museum where you’ll uncover the history of the oldest Highland Regiment with a range of exhibits and artifacts housed under the roof of Balhousie Castle.
Finally, make your way to Edinburgh and enjoy a free evening in the capital city.
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Edinburgh
Included meal: Breakfast
Get to know Edinburgh in all its medieval beauty on a tour led by a local expert.
- View the elegant neoclassical and Georgian architecture of New Town. Its ornate sandstone and granite structures, oasis-like gardens, and ample green space became a model for European urban planning.
- Contrast New Town’s grace with Old Town’s rustic Royal Mile, which runs between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace—the official residence of British monarchs in Scotland. Here, you’ll cross moody streets and narrow alleys, known as “closes,” flanked by brooding stone buildings and timeworn cathedrals.
- See the King George statue, Bute House (the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland), and the Sir Walter Scott monument—paying homage to the Ivanhoe and Rob Roy scribe—one of the largest sculptural tributes to an author in the world.
- Head up to the summit of Calton Hill, a monument-laden geographic feature best known as the headquarters of the Scottish government. Scope out the Royal Mile from above, then make your way to the Old Calton Burial Ground, the final resting place of such luminaries as the philosopher David Hume.
- Enter Edinburgh Castle to view two timeless icons: the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Scone, fixtures at coronation ceremonies over the centuries.
If you’d like, fill your night with song and dance at an optional cèilidh (say it “KAY-lee”). Maybe you’ll be inspired to take to the dance floor yourself!
Alternatively, use your free afternoon to take the scenic, uphill walk through Old Town to Arthur’s Seat. This lush, green, and stony cliff offers the kind of views of the city you’ll want to write home about. The climb up to Arthur’s Seat is a major tourist attraction and one of the best reasons to visit Edinburgh—but it’s also frequented by locals.
Please note: The order of today’s activities is subject to change.
Day 9: Free day in Edinburgh & bagpipe lesson
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Join the optional day trip to St Andrews—the home of golf and of Scotland’s oldest university. You’ll walk by the grounds of the University of St Andrews, an institution of higher education that has existed since 1413. (Fun fact for our anglophiles: Prince William met Kate Middleton while studying there!) Then, you’ll join a local guide to enter the ruins of the town’s medieval cathedral—a 12th-century structure that, in its heyday, was the largest church ever built in Scotland.
Prefer to see more of Edinburgh? Use your free day in the city to go back and wander the winding streets of Old Town. If you’re feeling adventurous, perhaps consider a spooky stroll through the tunnels that weave underneath the city. Of course, there’s always the option of tucking into a cozy cafe and lingering over tea and shortbread.
This evening, head to a private room at a local restaurant and meet with a professional bagpipe player.
- Learn about the history of the bagpipe, Scotland’s national instrument, and listen to the musician play a few songs. The bagpipe’s iconic sound is instantly recognizable with its constant, deep hum.
- Pick up your own bagpipe and follow along as you learn breathing techniques and how to play your first few notes.
- Celebrate your trip during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 10: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your stay to continue exploring Edinburgh. A city that’s been telling and retelling its stories for hundreds of years has much more to share with you. (Think: castles, secret gardens, and spooky dungeons. There’s something for everyone!)
Edinburgh extension
Continue your tour to keep exploring this historic, hilly city, and discover the charms waiting at the end of every close. Spend your extra time in Edinburgh however you’d like, and lean on your Tour Director to point you toward the most exciting sites.
Edinburgh2 nights
Day 10: Palace of Holyroodhouse
Included meal: Breakfast
Make your way down the Royal Mile to pop by the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King’s official residence in Edinburgh. This 16th-century retreat has been the Scottish home to British monarchs for more than 600 years. Take a self-guided audio tour of the palace and gardens to learn more about the royal family. You’ll walk through the state apartments, throne room, and portrait gallery, before heading outside to stroll along the pathways that wind through the manicured grounds.
Use your free afternoon in the city to go back and wander the winding streets of Old Town. If you’re feeling adventurous, perhaps consider a spooky stroll through the tunnels that weave underneath the city. Of course, there’s always tucking into a booth in a cozy cafe and lingering over tea and shortbread.
Please note: Photography is not permitted inside the palace.
Day 11: Free day in Edinburgh
Included meal: Breakfast
What better way to cap off a castle tour than by visiting some of the castles featured in Outlander? Add on this morning's excursion and set out to explore sights like Midhope and Doune castle, as well as the villages where the show took place.
Not joining the excursion? Head southeast of the city center to Craigmillar Castle for a quieter, more atmospheric alternative to Edinburgh Castle. Wonderfully preserved and with jaw-dropping views of Edinburgh, it twice hosted Mary, Queen of Scots.
This evening, enjoy a farewell drink as you celebrate your trip with your fellow group members.
Flight Home
Day 12: Departure
