Itinerary

Quito

Day 1: Flight & late-night arrival in Quito

Welcome to Ecuador! After arriving in Quito, make the short transfer with your groupmates to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat at your hotel, catch up on sleep, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Quito

Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch

The highest capital on the planet. The closest capital to the equator. The oldest capital in South America, and one of the very first World Heritage Sites inscribed by UNESCO. There’s no place quite like Quito, and today, you’ll embark on a guided sightseeing tour of it with your Tour Director.

  • Start by driving up El Panecillo, a cerro—or hill—topped by a 135-foot-tall aluminum statue of the Virgin Mary. Pause to appreciate a panorama of the volcano-rimmed city before descending into town.
  • Sit down to enjoy an included welcome lunch, then forge into the 16th-century historic center. Your first stop: the Basilica of the National Vow. Get a good look at the largest neo-Gothic church in the Americas, then continue on your way.
  • Keep walking through the historic center, passing Carondelet Palace, the seat of the Ecuadorean government; Independence Square, the vast public space locally known as Plaza Grande; and the Quito Metropolitan Cathedral, the most important Catholic church in the city.
  • Enter the Church of the Society of Jesus. Known simply as La Compañia, this Spanish Baroque house of worship boasts an opulent, gold leaf-lined interior, made more striking by mesmerizing geometric carvings.
  • Step inside the sprawling Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, yet another immaculately preserved piece of Ecuador’s colonial past.

Afterward, return to your hotel, unwind, and pack. This time tomorrow, you’ll be cruising the Galapagos Islands.

Lima & the Amazon Region extension

The Amazon rainforest drapes over nine different countries—luckily, Peru’s one of them, and accessing its wonders couldn’t be easier. One short domestic flight from Lima is all that separates you from Puerto Maldonado, an ecologist’s paradise nestled in a bend of the Madre de Dios River. Explore the Amazon from the water and the air, understanding its biodiversity with help from a naturalist guide, then head home with a more profound connection to nature.

Lima

Day 14: Sightseeing tour of Lima

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner

Start the day in Lima, following the main itinerary and setting out on one last walking tour as a group.

  • Start at the Plaza de Armas, the historic cradle and modern heart of Lima. Stroll through this manicured plaza, surrounded by gorgeous yolk-yellow buildings, and view a pair of local icons: the Baroque Lima Metropolitan Cathedral and the neoclassical Municipal Palace.
  • Enter the Huaca Pucllana archaeological site. Now surrounded by the buzzing Miraflores district, this adobe-and-clay pyramid was erected in the sixth century—predating the Inca Empire by almost 1,000 years.
  • Head toward the coast to the Parque del Amor—Love Park—and gaze at the mighty Pacific Ocean as you amble down its boardwalk.
  • Wrap up with a walk through the bohemian Barranco district, where artists, musicians, and other creatives ply their trades. Stop to sample coffees and alfajores—a delectable dessert of rich dulce de leche sandwiched between two shortbread cookies and dusted with powdered sugar.

Tonight, celebrate a tour well traveled at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine. While your groupmates who didn’t book the extension will relax in a dayroom before their flight home, you’ll return to your hotel for the night to sleep and get ready for tomorrow’s flight to Puerto Maldonado.

Puerto Maldonado

Day 15: Flight to Puerto Maldonado & twilight river expedition

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Board a flight bound for the fringes of the Amazon rainforest and land in Puerto Maldonado—Peru’s official Capital of Biodiversity. After an included lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll understand how it earned that title while on a twilight cruise of the Madre de Dios River.

As the sun goes down, listen as your naturalist guide expounds on the local ecosystem and the constellations slowly coming into view in the sky. Soon, nocturnal wildlife will stir from their slumber—look out over the river and its banks and watch them come to life.

Afterward, dock and head back to your lodge to enjoy an included dinner, served with beer or wine, before calling it a night.

Day 16: Lake Sandoval & Amazon rainforest excursion

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell dinner

After getting a taste of the Amazon last night, head back into the jungle for a full day of exploring.

  • First, take a short boat ride up the Madre de Dios River, then hop ashore and follow a nature trail to the marshes of Lake Sandoval. There, climb into a canoe and paddle around the horn-shaped lake, admiring the region’s unique flora and fauna from the water.
  • Return to Puerto Maldonado for an included lunch before departing for a canopy walk. Ascend a 100-foot tower and walk across a series of bridges to get a true bird’s-eye view of the forest floor—and maybe catch a glimpse of macaws and other native birds roosting in the trees.
  • Head back to your lodge, then take to the paths surrounding it for an evening rainforest walk. (If you’re feeling tired, that’s OK: You can hang back and rest instead of joining this optional activity.) Keep a sharp eye for the caimans, frogs, and other creatures that your naturalist guide points out.

End the day with a farewell dinner, and celebrate your trip with your choice of beer or wine.

Please note: Activities may differ depending on lodge facilities.

Day 17: Flight to Lima & departure

Included meal: Breakfast

Enjoy one last free morning in the Amazon before flying back to Lima, where you’ll spend the afternoon in a dayroom before boarding your flight home.
