Itinerary

Quito2 nights
Day 1: Flight & late-night arrival in Quito
Welcome to Ecuador! After arriving in Quito, make the short transfer with your groupmates to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, and adjust to the altitude. (Quito’s 9,350 feet above sea level—take it easy and drink plenty of water.)
Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Quito
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch
The highest capital on the planet. The closest capital to the equator. The oldest capital in South America, and one of the very first World Heritage Sites inscribed by UNESCO. There’s no place quite like Quito, and today, you’ll embark on a guided sightseeing tour of the city with your Tour Director.
- Start by driving up El Panecillo, a cerro—or hill—topped by a 135-foot-tall aluminum statue of the Virgin Mary. Pause to appreciate a panorama of the volcano-rimmed city before descending into town.
- Sit down to enjoy an included welcome lunch, then forge into the 16th-century historic center. Your first stop: the Basilica of the National Vow, the largest neo-Gothic church in the Americas.
- Keep walking through the historic center, passing Carondelet Palace, the seat of the Ecuadorean government; Independence Square, the vast public space locally known as Plaza Grande; and the Quito Metropolitan Cathedral, the most important Catholic church in the city.
- Enter the Church of the Society of Jesus. Known simply as La Compañia, this Spanish Baroque house of worship boasts an opulent, gold leaf-lined interior, made more striking by mesmerizing geometric carvings.
- Step inside the sprawling Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, yet another immaculately preserved piece of Ecuador’s colonial past.
Afterward, return to your hotel, unwind, and pack. Tomorrow, you’ll be headed to the legendary lands of the Amazon.
Amazon Region3 nights
Day 3: Transfer to the Amazon Region & Chocolate House visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting, Dinner
After breakfast, board your bus and begin your drive down the Andes Mountains. Watch as the landscape slowly shifts from volcanic peaks to dense cloud forests, humming with life; before you know it, you’ll be in the Ecuadorean Amazon, a 46,332-square-mile expanse that shelters 10% of Earth’s flora and 8% of its fauna.
Ecuador’s portion of the Amazon is also home to 14 of the country’s indigenous peoples, and your first stop in the region will be the Quechua outpost of Ahuano. After arriving, you’ll hop into a canoe and paddle down the Napo River to your lodge. Refuel with an included lunch before heading to the Chocolate House to round out a delectable day. There, you’ll learn all about the chocolate-making process—how to spot cacao pods, harvest them, and transform their seeds into decadent sweets. (Don’t worry, you’ll get to taste them, too!)
Return to your lodge and decompress before a buffet-style dinner with your group, served with beer or wine.
Day 4: Birdwatching, Misicocha Private Nature Reserve & community visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Early birds get the worm—and in this case, waking up before dawn means embarking on an optional, naturalist-guided birdwatching expedition. If you choose to join, you’ll work your way through the Amazon on foot and by boat, keeping an eye out for parrots, hummingbirds, toucans, and other winged creatures before returning to your lodge for breakfast.
After reuniting with your group, you’ll cruise along the Napo River and dock at the Misicocha Private Nature Reserve. Highly protected, this patch of secondary, or second-growth, forest is criss-crossed by nature paths, elevated bridges, and scenic creeks. With a local guide in the lead, you’ll hike through the reserve, taking in its flora and fauna from a variety of perspectives. (Riding a hanging basket over a ravine, anyone?)
Hike complete, you’ll return to your lodge for lunch before visiting a local river village to better understand how Amazonian populations live in, and interact with, the jungle. You’ll learn about their traditional way of life—aspects like their use of medicinal plants and animal traps—before viewing, and participating in, a blowgun demonstration.
Finally, freshen up back at the lodge and reconvene for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, before calling it a night.
Please note: At the Misicocha Private Nature Reserve, you should feel comfortable walking for 1.5 hours across uneven rainforest terrain.
Day 5: Cosano & amaZOOnico Rescue
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Eat breakfast with your group at your lodge this morning, then climb into an authentic dugout canoe and take to the waters of the Napo River once more. Row to Cosano—your lodge’s private nature reserve—and disembark for a nature walk led by a local guide.
As you explore a stretch of old-growth rainforest, your guide will point out wildlife and various hunting traps traditionally used by local tribes. Monkeys and tropical birds call the area home; keep watch for them, then return to your lodge for an included lunch.
Recharge for a spell before striking out into the Amazon one last time. Your destination: the amaZOOnico Animal Rescue Center, an organization dedicated to rehabilitating wildlife victimized by illegal trafficking. Watch their mission in action before heading back to your lodge for some free time. End your day with an included group dinner, served with beer or wine.
Papallacta1 night
Day 6: YAKUM reforestation project & Papallacta hot springs
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell dinner
As you venture back out of the Amazon, stop to visit YAKUM, an organization working to counter deforestation and reclaim resource sovereignty in indigenous communities.
- Meet with some of the staff to learn how indigenous perspectives and knowledge guide their efforts to avoid forest loss and regenerate barren former farmland.
- Visit YAKUM’s nurseries to discover the diverse plant species it uses to help regrow healthy forests, then make a direct impact by either planting a tree or participating in another conservation activity.
What better way to follow up a journey through the Amazon than with a soak in some of Ecuador’s finest hot springs? The mountain village of Papallacta lays claim to numerous termas—pools of glacial water warmed by geothermal heat. Spend the day hopping from spring to spring, trading steaming soaks and icy plunges in full view of cloud forests and the Antisana Volcano. (Craving deeper relaxation? Book a spa treatment!)
After a few hours of utter bliss, clean up at your hotel before gathering with your group at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine. Celebrate your trip with your fellow travelers, then retire for the evening.
Please note: Depending on availability, the visit to YAKUM may be replaced with a different community-based experience in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Overnight Flight1 night
Day 7: Transfer to Quito & departure
Included meal: Breakfast
Spend a relaxing morning in Papallacta before returning to Quito. Once there, stretch your legs in a dayroom before boarding a late-night or early morning flight home.
Please note: If you’re traveling on the tour extension to the Galapagos—and with the wonders of this biodiverse paradise just a few hours away, why wouldn’t you?—you’ll fly to San Cristóbal Island today.

Day 8: Arrival home
Arrive home today.
Please note: Due to varying flight schedules, some travelers may depart on the morning of day 7, arriving home later that evening.
The Galapagos extension
The sheer amount of unique species found on the Galapagos Islands led Charles Darwin to dub the chain “a little world within itself.” A century later, UNESCO reaffirmed the archipelago’s exceptional status, deeming it a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. Now, it’s your turn to take it all in. During this three-night extension, you’ll base on San Cristóbal, one of the oldest and most fertile areas of the Galapagos. You’ll trek across the island, coming face-to-face with the endemic plants and animals that make the region special. And don’t forget the views: San Cristóbal’s rocky grays, Pacific blues, and leafy greens are a sight to behold.
The Galapagos3 nights
Day 7: Flight to San Cristóbal Island, Interpretation Center & Cerro Tijeritas
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Begin your day with breakfast, then transfer to the Quito airport for a flight to San Cristóbal—the easternmost of the Galapagos Islands. After touching down, ride into town and sit down for an included lunch. Then, it’s on to a full afternoon of activities.
- Start at the Interpretation Center. Set on the outskirts of the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, this research institute introduces visitors to the geological, biological, and anthropological history of the Galápagos.
- View the Interpretation Center’s exhibits, then hike to nearby Cerro Tijeritas for a prime view of Baquerizo Moreno Bay and its resident frigatebirds.
- Descend the hill and reach the bay’s shores. Once there, either jump into the water for some snorkeling or stay dry and spot fishes, turtles, and sea lions from the sand.
With your first day in the Galapagos in the books, drive to your hotel and settle in. Later, you’ll regroup for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: Your flight may stop in the port city of Guayaquil to pick up additional passengers.
Day 8: La Galapaguera, farm lunch & El Junco
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After yesterday’s introduction to the Galapagos, spend today getting to know one of the islands’ oldest and most endangered species—the famed giant tortoise. You’ll visit La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado, the only place on San Cristóbal where you can see these gentle creatures in semi-captivity. The breeding center prepares giant tortoises for reintroduction to the wild; while there, you’ll learn about its efforts to bolster the population of these threatened animals.
Pop up to the highlands for an included farm-fresh lunch, then journey to Puerto Chino to meet up with a naturalist guide and walk to El Junco. One of the only permanent sources of fresh water in all the Galapagos, this lagoon fills the collapsed cone of an extinct volcano. Your guide will highlight the area’s wildlife, as well as its geological composition. Marvel at the scenery unfolding before you, then return to your hotel for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 9: Lobos Island cruise & hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell dinner
What little Lobos Island lacks in size, it more than makes up for in wildlife: In addition to the colony of sea lions that lend the islet its name, it’s also home to fur seals, blue-footed boobies, and other vibrant marine life. Today, you’ll take it all in yourself.
Climb aboard a boat and cruise just off the coast of San Cristóbal. Disembark on Lobos Island for a hike across its windswept terrain; afterward, you’ll enjoy free time to snorkel its azure waters before sailing back to your hotel.
Freshen up, reconvene for a farewell dinner, and toast to an unforgettable trip with your choice of beer or wine.
Please note: For the Lobos Island hike, you should feel comfortable walking across rocky, uneven trails with some wooden stairs. Walking sticks will be provided.
