Begin in imperial Vienna, where Habsburg palaces still anchor the cityscape, before dipping into the Austrian Lakes region for a taste of Alpine life in the villages of Hallstatt and Mondsee. Innsbruck extension

Mountains on all sides. A medieval Old Town at its core. The quintessential Alpine city, Innsbruck looks as if it were plucked from a postcard, and on this extension, you’ll get to the heart of this picture-perfect place. Spend two days exploring its Renaissance churches and Habsburg palaces—and maybe even join us on an adventure into the Alps.

Innsbruck

Day 9: Transfer to Innsbruck & sightseeing tour

Included meal: Breakfast

Long a destination for winter thrillseekers, Innsbruck’s cultural cachet matches its Olympic pedigree. After arriving via bus from Salzburg, link up with a local guide for a tour of the Tyrolean capital before breaking for the evening.

  • Venture into the Old Town for a glimpse of two local legends: the Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof, covered in over 2,600 gilded copper tiles) and the Stadtturm (the City Tower, a 150-foot Gothic sentry post).
  • Pass the Hofburg and walk its cobblestoned courtyard. Prized for its architectural design, this former Habsburg palace is one of the most important cultural sites in all of Austria.
  • Enter the Baroque Cathedral of St. James, an 18th-century structure that houses Maria Hilf (Mary of Succor), one of the most venerated works of Marian art in the Christian world.
  • Visit Ambras Castle for a self-guided tour. Overlooking Innsbruck from a nearby hill, this Renaissance-palace-turned-national-museum still houses Archduke Ferdinand II’s prized art collection—paintings, portraits, suits of armor, and other curiosities.

Day 10: Free day in Innsbruck

Included meal: Breakfast

The magnificent peaks of the Nordkette are your constant companion in Innsbruck—and if you’d like to experience their beauty up close, be sure to add today’s optional outing to your itinerary.

Otherwise, hang back in town and explore at your leisure. The Bergisel Ski Jump—site of two Olympic championships and other international competitions—stands south of the Old Town; climbing to its Zaha Hadid-designed observation deck reveals a sweeping view of Innsbruck’s neighboring mountains.

Whatever you choose, you’ll reconvene with your group one last time in the evening for a farewell drink and raise a toast to a successful trip.

Flight home

Day 11: Departure
