Vienna3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Vienna
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Austria! Transfer to your hotel and get settled in. Tonight, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers during a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Vienna & Christmas markets
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Coffeehouse culture. Symphonies and orchestras. Mulled wine and Christmas lights. When the holidays roll around, imperial Vienna takes on a whole different energy, and today, you’ll enjoy the City of Dreams at its wintry best on a sightseeing tour with a local guide.
- Travel down the tree-canopied paths of the Ringstrasse—Vienna’s gorgeous Ring Road—passing the Austrian Parliament Building, Vienna State Opera, and Kunsthistorisches Museum as you go.
- Pull into the Innere Stadt—Vienna’s historic center—and enter the Austrian National Library. Founded by the Habsburgs, Austria’s largest library stuns with its Baroque architecture, wooden bookshelves loaded with valuable tomes, and frescoed ceilings.
- Leave the library and pause to sample apple strudel, a dessert made from spiced apple slices wrapped in flaky, fall-apart dough. (This all-season treat’s especially tasty in the winter, when the warm filling offsets the chill in the air.)
- End your sightseeing tour next to the Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral—beautiful any day, but resplendent when lit by the gentle glow of holiday lights. One of Vienna’s biggest Christmas markets sprawls across Stephansplatz, the square in front of the church; after indulging in a tasting of mulled wine and cookies, roam its 40 or so booths at your leisure.
Day 4: Free day in Vienna & heurigen dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
For a deeper dive into Vienna’s imperial heritage, add our optional excursion to your itinerary to visit the regal Schonbrunn Palace. (How many of its 1,441 rooms will you see?) Or, spend your afternoon strolling the city’s beautiful boulevards, finding the perfect cafe to while away the hours in.
Whatever you choose, you’ll bookend your day with some sweet relaxation—and a glass of beer or wine—during tonight’s included dinner. Vienna’s the only capital in the world with large vineyards within its limits, and the city’s heurigen (or traditional taverns) hold a place of honor in its viticulture. With your fellow travelers, head to one of these restaurants and spend the evening indulging in Austrian cuisine as music echoes and housemade wine flows.
Austrian Lake District2 nights
Day 5: Austrian Lake District via Wolfgangsee boat ride & Schafberg cog railway
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
From Vienna, drive west to the Salzkammergut—Austria’s UNESCO-listed lake district—and stop in the waterfront town of St. Gilgen. There, board a waiting boat and push off for a scenic cruise across the Wolfgangsee. Breathe in the crisp Alpine air and drink in the sights above deck; soon, you’ll moor in St. Wolfgang.
Back ashore, you’ll climb onto the Schafbergbahn: Since 1893, this cogwheel train—the steepest in Austria—has made the 3.5-mile journey to the peak of its namesake mountain. At the summit, you’ll be treated to a sweeping view of the Salzkammergut, its frozen lakes twinkling in the sunlight and its snowcapped mountains stretching into the distance. Finally, return to St. Wolfgang and enjoy some time in the town’s lakeside Christmas market. Wooden stalls selling souvenirs and snacks, floating lights reflecting off the Wolgangsee—revel in it all before hitting the road once again.
Tonight, you’ll join your groupmates for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 6: Free day in the Austrian Lake District
Included meal: Breakfast
Wooden homes huddled together on the shores of an Alpine lake. Mines that have produced salt for seven millennia. Everything about Hallstatt makes it feel like a fairy tale, and if you add today’s optional outing to your itinerary, you’ll step into its storybook setting on a daytrip to the town. Prefer a day to yourself? Hang back at your hotel and let the beauty of the Austrian winter revitalize you.
Salzburg2 nights
Day 7: Mondsee, Schloss Hellbrunn & “The Sound of Music”
Included meal: Breakfast
As you drive from the Austrian Lake District to Salzburg, look around. The landscapes flashing by you played a central role in “The Sound of Music,” and today, you’ll make a pair of pitstops that dive deeper into this classic film—with some holiday magic sprinkled in.
- Leave your bus in the lakeside town of Mondsee and enter the ornate Basilica of St. Michael—the setting for the wedding of Maria Augusta Kutschera and Georg Ludwig von Trapp.
- Continue on the road to Salzburg, stopping just outside the city to visit Schloss Hellbrun. An array of gardens surrounds this yolk-yellow villa, and its white, glass-paneled gazebo featured in the songs “Something Good” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”
- Step into a scene lifted straight from a holiday movie at the Hellbrunner Adventzauber—the palace’s very own Christmas market. Roam the stalls set up in Schloss Hellbrun’s Baroque courtyard and let the spirit of the season wash over you.
Want to make plans for the evening? Serenade your senses by opting for tonight’s dinner, served in one of Europe’s oldest restaurants and accompanied by live performances of Mozart’s music. Alternatively, relax in your hotel room and enjoy the sounds of the city.
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Salzburg & Christmas markets
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
Famed for its musical history and Hollywood connections—and, of course, its Christmas markets—riverside Salzburg stands at the very foot of the Alps. Its Old Town, or Altstadt, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, and today, a local guide will lead you on a walking tour of its historic core.
- Go for a stroll through the 17th-century Mirabell Gardens, along the same paths and flowerbeds that featured in “The Sound of Music.”
- Pass by the University of Salzburg—an institution of higher learning first established in 1622—and St. Peter’s Abbey. Operating in some form or another since 696, it’s the oldest continually operating monastery in German-speaking Europe.
- See a trio of famous squares: the Kapitelplatz, former site of the Cathedral Abbey; Residenzplatz, once home of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg; and Alter Markt, where the city’s weekly market used to set up shop (and where holiday stalls now stand).
- Walk by the dashing yellow facade of the Mozarts Geburtshaus, the birthplace and childhood home of the virtuosic composer.
- Enter the richly ornamented Salzburg Cathedral. Although the current Baroque structure was built in the 17th century, the building’s roots go all the way back to 774, when St. Vergilius founded the church atop the remains of an old Roman town.
- Nibble on freshly baked cookies at one of Salzburg’s Christmas markets and share a festive memory with your fellow travelers before breaking for some free time.
The afternoon’s yours to do with as you please—whether that’s walking the banks of the Salzach or climbing to the holiday market in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Tonight, meet up with your groupmates for one final meal. Toast your trip during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine, before turning in for the night.

Day 9: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport in Munich, Germany, for your flight home, or skirt the Bavarian capital and continue your adventures in Innsbruck on this trip’s extension.
Innsbruck extension
Snow-dusted mountains on all sides. A medieval Old Town at its core. The quintessential Alpine city, Innsbruck looks as if it were plucked from a Christmas card, and on this extension, you’ll get to the heart of this picture-perfect place. Spend two days exploring its Renaissance churches, Habsburg palaces, and holiday markets—and maybe even join us on an adventure into the Alps.
Innsbruck2 nights
Day 9: Transfer to Innsbruck, sightseeing tour & Christmas markets
Included meal: Breakfast
Long a destination for winter thrillseekers, Innsbruck’s cultural cachet matches its Olympic pedigree. After arriving from Salzburg, link up with a local guide for a tour of the Tyrolean capital—with a festive surprise as the finale—before breaking for the evening.
- Venture into the Old Town, decked in holiday lights and decorations, for a glimpse of two local legends: the Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof, covered in over 2,600 gilded copper tiles) and the Stadtturm (the City Tower, a 150-foot Gothic sentry post).
- Pass the Hofburg and walk its cobblestoned courtyard. Prized for its architectural design, this former Habsburg palace is one of the most important cultural sites in all of Austria.
- Enter the Baroque Cathedral of St. James, an 18th-century structure that houses “Maria Hilf” (“Mary of Succor”), one of the most venerated works of Marian art in the Christian world.
- Get into the Christmas spirit at one of Innsbruck’s holiday markets. Sip a cup of steaming gluhwein, snack on kiachln (rounds of deep-fried yeast dough filled with jams and dusted with powdered sugar), and amble from stall to stall.
Day 10: Free day in Innsbruck
Included meal: Breakfast
The magnificent peaks of the Nordkette are your constant companions in Innsbruck—and if you’d like to experience their beauty up close, be sure to add today’s optional outing to your itinerary. Otherwise, hang back in town and explore at your leisure. The Bergisel Ski Jump—site of two Olympic championships and other international competitions—stands south of the Old Town; climbing to its Zaha Hadid-designed observation deck reveals a sweeping view of Innsbruck’s neighboring mountains. (You might even spot another Christmas market to visit!)
Whatever you choose, you’ll reconvene with your group one last time in the evening for a farewell drink and raise a toast to a successful trip.
