A Scandinavian favorite recipe: Lingonberry jam

Lingonberries are native to the northern reaches of Europe, where the Scandinavian favorite lingonberry jam is made with freshly picked berries from the forests of Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The tart and sweet spread is a popular side for everything from meatballs to pancakes—you name it!

Can’t find lingonberries at your local grocery store? Try IKEA! The furniture giant also sells Nordic pantry staples. Or, you can substitute fresh cranberries for a similar taste.

Ingredients:

4 cups lingonberries

1/2 cup water

1 cup sugar

Directions:

Rinse and drain lingonberries in a colander, picking out any leaves. Place berries in a medium saucepan and add water, then heat until boiling. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Lower heat to medium-high and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir for 1 to 2 minutes. Chill before serving with meatballs, or serve warm as a topping for pancakes.
