12 days | 14 days with Victoria Falls extension |
- Group size
- 5–18 travelers
- Activity level
Go solo, not alone, and smile at South Africa’s mosaic of landscapes, cultures, and wildlife.
Table Mountain. Kruger National Park. The Panorama Route. South Africa’s scenery begs you to explore, and on this Solo Tour, you’ll strike out into the bush with a crew of fellow travelers. But you won’t stop there: Between driving the Cape Peninsula and greeting the resident primates at Chimp Eden, you’ll dig into the history of a nation determined not to forget its past. Cape Town’s District Six Museum and Nelson Mandela’s home in Johannesburg’s Soweto township deliver poignant reminders of the evils of apartheid and how South Africans fought to end it. In all, this itinerary is as diverse as the country it explores—and the extension to Victoria Falls showcases another of Africa’s jewels.

Cape Town4 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Cape Town
Welcome to South Africa! Meet your Tour Director with a “howzit”—a casual greeting used throughout the country—and transfer to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so take it easy and get some well-deserved rest.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Cape Town
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
Founded in 1652, Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa, and has the cultural heritage to match. Start your first full day here by joining your Tour Director for some guided sightseeing.
- Ride a cable car up Table Mountain—one of Cape Town’s defining features—and revel in the panorama unfolding below you.
- See the flat-topped peak of Signal Hill and the Castle of Good Hope, a 17th-century bastion fort erected by the Dutch East India Company.
- Drive on through the city, catching glimpses of City Hall—distinguishable by its Edwardian style—and the Neoclassical Houses of Parliament as you go.
- Leave your bus and set out on a walking tour of Bo-Kaap. Painting the slopes of Signal Hill in flashes of color, the pastel homes and cobbled roads of this neighborhood nurtured the Cape Malay culture created by Muslims who arrived in the country in the 1700s.
- Visit the District Six Museum to learn about those who were forcibly removed under Apartheid—a ruthless system of racial segregation that only ended in 1990. While there, see how its employees are helping to rebuild and strengthen communities in District Six and beyond.
After wrapping up your morning tour, join your group for an optional excursion to Robben Island, site of a notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela captive. Or, enjoy a free afternoon in Cape Town, sunbathing on one of its 10 Blue Flag beaches—strips of shore recognized worldwide for their quality and sustainability.
Finally, cap the day’s adventures with a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine, before calling it a night.
Please note: The cable car ride up Table Mountain is weather-dependent. Also, on some departures, the optional excursion will be offered in the morning and the sightseeing tour will take place in the afternoon. For departures during July and August, you’ll visit Signal Hill and enjoy an included lunch due to annual maintenance of the Table Mountain cable car.
Day 4: Cape Peninsula
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
The rocky Cape Peninsula dangles off the African continent, its cluster of mountains rising out of the sea. Today, spend some time cruising its scenic roads, hopping on and off your bus as you go.
- Drive along the Atlantic seaboard, passing through the suburbs of Clifton, Camps Bay, and Hout Bay and admiring the sugary sands of their beaches.
- Visit the Cape of Good Hope—an instantly recognizable headland long used as a landmark by mariners—and the Cape Point lighthouse, soaking up beautiful views all the while.
- Head to coastal Simon’s Town, where you’ll have free time for lunch or a walk along the beach. Then, go to Boulders Beach, a protected marine habitat and home to a colony of endangered African penguins.
After a day of exploring, return to Cape Town for a relaxing free evening.
Day 5: Free day in Cape Town
Included meal: Breakfast
Want to spice up your last day in Cape Town? Add our two optional excursions to your itinerary. In the morning, you could pair a light lunch with a sampling of wines crafted in the fertile Cape Winelands; at night, you could drum and dine at GOLD Restaurant—a culinary destination famous for its immersive meal services. If you’d prefer some me time, consider visiting the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and familiarizing yourself with the native flora.
Johannesburg1 night
Day 6: Transfer to Johannesburg & sightseeing tour of Soweto
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, fly to Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, and make your way to Soweto. This township, like others, traces its roots to the country’s apartheid era, when the government forced non-white South Africans to relocate from white-only neighborhoods to outlying districts. A local guide will introduce you to its history—and some of its most powerful landmarks.
- See FNB Stadium. Known as Soccer City, it’s the largest stadium in Africa and hosted the final game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
- Pass Vilakazi Street, the only road in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates—Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
- Enter the Hector Pieterson Museum, named after a 12-year-old killed during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. While there, you’ll learn more about the incident—how police opened fire on schoolchildren peacefully protesting a government mandate to teach in Afrikaans.
- Walk through the Nelson Mandela National Museum, set in the home where the beloved leader lived from 1946-62, and discover the different ways apartheid oppressed South Africa’s non-white populace.
Afterward, join your group for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, before retiring to your room.
Kruger Region3 nights
Day 7: Kruger National Park Region via Chimp Eden
Included meal: Breakfast
Sprawling across 2,500 acres of the Umhloti Nature Reserve, Chimp Eden continues the work of esteemed primatologist Jane Goodall. Since 2006, this sanctuary—the only of its kind in South Africa—has cared for chimpanzees displaced from their natural habitats. As you make your way to Kruger National Park, you’ll stop at the haven to learn about its residents.
- Head to a series of viewpoints to spot chimps roaming their semi-wild enclosures, moving freely through lush forest and foraging areas.
- Hear how those designated foraging areas help positively reinforce their natural behaviors while protecting them from human intervention.
Bid your animal friends farewell—and get ready to meet more new pals—and head to your safari lodge in the Kruger National Park region. You’ll arrive in the afternoon, leaving you with a free evening to unwind.
Day 8: Kruger National Park game drives
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The largest game reserve in South Africa. A key part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Kruger National Park stuns in scale and diversity—and the best way to comprehend both is on a game drive. Set out with a naturalist guide for a full day in the park, where you’ll have a chance to see the Big Five game animals: buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos. Halfway through, you’ll pause at a boma—a type of protective enclosure—for an included lunch.
After your safari, return to your hotel to freshen up before an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 9: Moholoho Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, head to the outskirts of the Kruger region to tour the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing all types of animals, the organization prioritizes conservation, and during your visit, you’ll come to understand their efforts.
- Discover Moholoholo’s various initiatives and learn how they work to return injured, orphaned, and poisoned animals to their natural habitats.
- Meet some of the animals in their care—leopards, honey badgers, hawks, and more. Some might be slated for release, while others, too hurt to set free, call the center home.
- Learn about Moholoholo’s breeding programs, aimed at reintroducing species to areas where they’ve gone locally extinct.
Finish with a little bit of shopping at their on-site store before returning to your hotel for some downtime. Tonight, you’ll reconvene for an outdoor bush dinner, served with beer or wine: Gather around a campfire, clink glasses, and share your favorite stories.
Johannesburg1 night
Day 10: Transfer to Johannesburg via Panorama Route
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Today, take the scenic route—the Panorama Route—back to Johannesburg. Snaking roughly 240 miles through the province of Mpumalanga, this road links wonder after wonder, filling the return trip with snapshots of valleys, waterfalls, and more.
- Peer through God’s Window, a break in the hills revealing sheer cliffs and a forest-draped ravine stretching into the distance.
- Look down into the Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a mesmerizing collection of cylindrical rock formations bored over the years by swirling eddies of water.
- Stop at the Blyde River Canyon—one of the deepest on the planet—and gaze out over the emerald panorama that greets you. (On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mozambique!)
Finally, pull into Johannesburg and come together for a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Overnight Flight1 night
Day 11: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
You’ll transfer to the airport this morning for a flight—but where you head is up to you. Want to feel the power of Victoria Falls as it roars over its nearly mile-long ledge? Add this trip’s extension.
Arrive Home
Day 12: Arrival at home
Arrive home today.
Victoria Falls extension
Describing Victoria Falls as a UNESCO World Heritage Site doesn’t quite do it justice—but its Lozi name, The Smoke That Thunders, paints a proper picture. It’s a waterfall of truly epic proportions, one best experienced in a group. On this extension, you’ll feel its rumble and smile as it takes your (and your fellow travelers’) breath away.
Victoria Falls2 nights
Day 11: Flight to Victoria Falls
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
While some of your groupmates fly home, you’ll take to the skies and head for Victoria Falls. Depending on flight itineraries, you’ll either land in Zimbabwe or Zambia—but either way, a short bus transfer’s all that separates you from your hotel.
Once you check in, rest for a spell before linking back up for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 12: Sightseeing tour of Victoria Falls, Chinotimba township & Rose of Charity visit
Included meal: Breakfast
Close to 33,000 cubic feet of water flows through Victoria Falls each second, as the entirety of the Zambezi River pours over its precipice. The resulting sight is nothing short of astonishing—and on today’s guided tour, you’ll see it from multiple angles. Follow a local guide down a trail network and pause at several vantage points for those oohs and ahs. As you go, you’ll also learn about the area’s history, as well as its flora and fauna.
After wrapping up at Victoria Falls, you’ll head to the Chinotimba township, where the indigenous Nambya and Tonga have long lived. As you walk, you’ll spot traditional homes, active churches, and the local market, hearing about the village’s traditional culture all the while.
Before returning to your hotel, pay a visit to the Rose of Charity—a local nongovernmental organization dedicated to supporting local children. Discover how they work to expand education opportunities and alleviate poverty in the community, and know that your visit includes a donation to help them carry on their vital work.
To end your trip on a high note, add our optional sunset cruise to your itinerary and take to the waters of the Zambezi. Otherwise, spend a restful night in and prepare for your journey home.
Please note: The ground around Victoria Falls gets slippery, so we recommend wearing good, grippy shoes. Also, depending on flight schedules, your visit to the Chinotimba township may instead take place on day 11.
