Overnight Flight2 nights
Day 1: Travel day
Begin your journey to New Zealand. While flying over the Pacific Ocean, you’ll cross the International Date Line and “lose” a day, jumping ahead one date on the calendar. (Don’t worry: You’ll more than make it up while on tour!)
Day 2: Travel day
Keep flying toward New Zealand. Soon enough, you’ll be landing in Auckland.
Auckland2 nights
Day 3: Arrival in Auckland
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Say hello to your Tour Director at the airport, then transfer to your hotel. You’ll have some time to freshen up before meeting the rest of your group at this evening’s welcome dinner. Enjoy your meal, served with beer or wine, and get excited to continue your adventure.
Day 4: Sightseeing tour of Waiheke Island
Included meals: Breakfast, Wine tasting, Tasting
With its rolling vineyards, golden beaches, and laid-back charm, Waiheke Island is a gem just a short ferry ride from Auckland. After breakfast, set off on a scenic journey and discover why this island is a favorite escape for locals and visitors alike.
- Cruise across the sparkling waters of Waitemata Harbour aboard a ferry, taking in panoramic views of the city skyline and surrounding islands.
- Arrive at Waiheke’s wharf and meet your local guide, who’ll share stories of the island’s rich history, unique ecosystems, and colorful characters.
- Visit a boutique vineyard nestled among the hills for a guided wine tasting featuring some of the region’s finest varietals.
- Continue to a working olive oil mill to learn about the production process and sample award-winning oils.
- Stroll along the nearby beach, where you can dip your toes in the water or simply relax and admire the coastal scenery.
- Enjoy free time for lunch at a local cafe or seaside restaurant before boarding the ferry back to Auckland.
Rotorua2 nights
Day 5: Transfer to Rotorua, The National Kiwi Hatchery & traditional Maori village dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Head to Rotorua, a lakeside town first settled by the Maori in the mid-14th century—but before pulling in, detour to The National Kiwi Hatchery. Since opening in 2008, this institute has grown into the largest of its kind in the world, and today, you’ll take a behind-the-scenes look at its pioneering facilities. Walk by incubators housing hatchlings, learning about the organization’s efforts to protect New Zealand’s national bird, before returning to your bus.
After freshening up at your hotel and enjoying some downtime, strike back out of Rotorua for a private dinner, hosted by a Maori village.
- Kick your evening off with a whakatau, a welcome ceremony centered on the ideas of manaakitanga (showing respect) and whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships).
- Sit down to a home-cooked, two-course meal, prepared using the steam spouted from geothermal vents.
- Join your hosts for a cultural discussion and dig deeper into the life, culture, architecture, and aspirations of their village.
Please note: Kiwi hatching season typically runs from September to March. Outside these months, you may not see any kiwi eggs or chicks at The National Kiwi Hatchery. Also, you’ll need to take your shoes off while visiting the Maori village.
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of the Rotorua region
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Set off on a sightseeing tour of the Rotorua region today, where geothermal wonders and rich cultural heritage come together in an unforgettable experience.
- Visit the village of Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village nestled among steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and natural hot springs—an extraordinary landscape shaped by volcanic forces.
- Join a local Whakarewarewa guide for an immersive journey into the traditions, stories, and daily life of the Maori people, who have harmoniously coexisted with this geothermal environment for generations.
- Settle in for a cultural performance and admire the breadth of Maori song and dance: the powerful vocals and swinging weights of poi; the intricate twirls and clacking sticks of ti rakau; and the sturdy stances and reverberating shouts of the haka.
- Try some traditional sweet corn, uniquely cooked in the village’s naturally boiling geothermal pools—a delicious and authentic taste of Maori culinary heritage.
- Visit Rotorua’s Government Gardens, a beautifully manicured public park adorned with Edwardian architecture and vibrant flowerbeds, and a site of deep historical and cultural significance to the local Maori community.
After sharing farewells, spend the rest of the day at your leisure. To continue exploring, take advantage of your free time to wander through the vibrant Rotorua Night Market or stroll along the scenic shores of Lake Rotorua. (Your Tour Director may even have a surprise in store: an optional outing to Hobbiton, the movie set used in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.)
Fiordland National Park Region2 nights
Day 7: Flight to Queenstown & transfer to the Fiordland National Park region
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, say goodbye to the North Island as you fly to Queenstown. Look all around you: Soaring mountain ranges surround this town of 29,000 people. Wherever you turn, there’s a photo waiting to be snapped—so keep your camera close as you make the drive to the Fiordland National Park region.
Once you arrive, settle into your hotel and shake off your travels. This evening, you’ll reconvene for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 8: Milford Sound, Lake Te Anau cruise & Glowworm Caves
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Get an early start today and make your way through Fiordland National Park. At roughly 4,900 square miles, it’s New Zealand’s largest national park, and every inch of it is packed with breathtaking scenery. (And yes, there are plenty of fjords—or “fiords” as the locals spell it—throughout, interspersed with rivers, rainforests, and more.)
- Roll along the farmland of Five Rivers and past Lake Te Anau. Opening onto three inland fjords, the lake is the largest on New Zealand’s South Island and marks the beginning of the Fiordlands.
- Pass through beautiful beech forests and by more glimmering lakes before arriving at the Homer Saddle mountain pass. There, you’ll drive through Homer Tunnel, a three-quarter mile cut through the snowcapped peaks of the Darran Mountains.
From there, it’s just a short drive to Milford Sound. Leave your bus behind and transfer to a boat for a relaxing cruise along calm waters, paired with an included lunch. You’ll get a good look at Mitre Peak, too, looming more than 5,500 feet above the sound.
Before calling it a day, you’ll make one more stop. The caves that line Lake Te Anau host some special tenants: glowworms, who light up the caverns with their bioluminescence. Take a catamaran across the lake with a naturalist guide. Then, break out into smaller groups, walk into the caves, and head for those ethereal lights.
Please note: The order of today’s activities is subject to change. Also, cameras are prohibited inside the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.
Queenstown2 nights
Day 9: Queenstown via Arrowtown
Included meal: Breakfast
Today, head back toward Queenstown with your group, passing by it for a stop in the historic settlement of Arrowtown. Founded in 1862 at the height of the Otago Gold Rush, the township still has its old-timey charm, courtesy of the well-preserved period buildings lining its main avenue. Beyond its principal street, you’ll find the Chinese Settlement, a collection of restored huts that once sheltered the town’s immigrant population.
Double back and arrive in Queenstown. To trek through time, book our optional excursion and cruise to the base of Walter Peak aboard the steamship TSS Earnslaw. Or, to slow things down and remain in the present, enjoy some solo relaxation at the Onsen Hot Pools. (Cedar-lined soaking tubs with epic mountain views? Yes, please.)
Please note: The lunch version of our Walter Peak excursion runs from June to September, and the dinner version runs from October to May.
Day 10: Free day in Queenstown
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Add a flavorful twist to your last full day in New Zealand by signing up for today’s optional excursion. Tack it onto your itinerary, and you’ll head into the Central Otago Valley—one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions—to discover what makes its cool-climate varietals so special. You’ll tour a local winery, enjoy a tasting, and sit down to a delicious included lunch with vineyard views to match. Prefer to stay local? Ride the Skyline Gondola for panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, or take a leisurely lakeside stroll through Queenstown Gardens.
No matter how you spend your time, you’ll rejoin your group later tonight to celebrate your trip at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 11: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your trip by heading west to neighboring Australia. Take up the extension and you’ll spend three days exploring Sydney—from iconic landmarks like the Opera House to coastal staples like Bondi Beach.
Sydney extension
Spot the sails of the Sydney Opera House, reflecting off the waves rolling through the harbor, and it’ll hit you: There’s something special about this Australian city. And after three days immersed in its beauty—from the breakers off Bondi Beach to the panorama unfurling from Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair—you’ll know it’s a place unlike any other.
Sydney3 nights
Day 11: Flight to Sydney
Included meal: Breakfast
Take off from Queenstown’s airport and fly across the Tasman Sea. Once you touch down and transfer to your hotel, the rest of the day’s yours. Maybe strike out on your own and get to know Sydney’s cultural scene: The Australian Museum (the fifth-oldest natural history museum in the world) is a must, as is the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
For a delightful dinner served with a helping of sweeping city views, book tonight’s optional harbor cruise. Alternatively, pop into a fish and chip shop, order your meal to-go, and eat as you bask in the sunset on one of Sydney’s beaches.
Day 12: Sightseeing tour of Sydney
Included meal: Breakfast
With its mesmerizing interplay of hills, waterways, and skyscrapers, the Harbour City of Sydney always puts on a show—whether it’s your first or fifth time visiting. After breakfast, join your Tour Director for a guided tour of this bucket list mainstay.
- Pass the buzzing waterside district of Darling Harbour and the lush Royal Botanic Gardens in the city center.
- See The Rocks, Sydney’s oldest colonial neighborhood, and stop at Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair—a bench carved into sandstone in the early 1800s—to admire the view of Sydney Harbour Bridge.
- Soak in the sunny sights of world-famous Bondi Beach, its iconic Bondi Icebergs Club (with swimming pools perched over the ocean so that crashing waves splash up into them), and the Gap, a dramatic dip in the cliffs of Watsons Bay.
- Enter the National Opal Collection and peruse its extensive assortment of Australia’s national gemstone. Each iridescent stone demands attention, but our favorite exhibit showcases opalized fossils.
- Step inside the UNESCO-listed Sydney Opera House—the 14-masted building that has graced photos and films since 1973—with a local guide and admire the architecture of this global icon from within.
Day 13: Free day in Sydney
Included meal: Breakfast
To make the most of your final day in Sydney, add one last adventure to your itinerary by signing up for our optional excursion to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Lush bushland, Aboriginal rock art, the Hawkesbury River—you’ll have ample time to drink it all in.
Prefer to stay in the city? Spend your free time browsing the eclectic shops and cafes of Newtown or take a scenic ferry ride to Manly Beach for some laid-back time on the water.
Tonight, you’ll meet back up with the rest of your groupmates for a farewell drink and celebrate a trip well-spent.
Flight Home
Day 14: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
