Itinerary

Overnight Flight1 night
Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Porto today.
Porto3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Porto
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Portugal! Settle into your hotel in this 2,000-year-old, UNESCO-listed city. Later, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Porto
Included meal: Breakfast
Navigate narrow streets and old-world architecture like a true tripeiro, or Porto resident, as you follow your city guide on a sightseeing tour. Keep an eye out for azulejos—the intricately painted, cobalt-and-white tiles that adorn church facades, train stations, and many other delightful nooks and crannies.
- Wander through the tiny riverside lanes of the Ribeira district and let your eyes dance across its candy-colored buildings.
- Pass citywide icons—such as the Baroque-style Clerigos Tower, the Gothic Sao Francisco Church, and the double-decker Dom Luís I Bridge—as you wind along the Douro River to the mouth of the Atlantic.
- Step inside the city’s Neoclassical Stock Exchange Palace and see the dazzling, gilded geometrical patterns of the Arab Room.
The best views of Porto are from the waters of the Douro. If you sign up for this afternoon’s excursion, you’ll cruise by hillside villas and under ancient bridges, ending with a guided tour of a Port wine cellar (complete with a tasting, of course).
Not joining the cruise? Spend your free afternoon uncovering the architectural and culinary treasures of the Ribeira district—and try to hunt down a francesinha. This hearty, tomato sauce-soaked take on the French croque monsieur is a Portuense specialty.
Day 4: Free day in Porto
Included meal: Breakfast
Use your free day in Porto to recharge with fresh produce and local snacks from Bolhao Market—it’s been serving locals since 1914. You can also head to the Crystal Palace Gardens for a scenic (and fragrant) vantage point overlooking the city and Douro River.
Prefer to leave the planning to us? Join our optional excursion to the medieval city center of Guimaraes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s known as the “birthplace of Portugal” because Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, was born here.
Douro Valley1 night
Day 5: Douro Valley via Casa de Mateus & wine tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Wine tasting
Travel through rolling hills and small villages as you make your way to the Douro Valley, making stops as you go. The vineyards terraced into this fertile region produce Portugal’s luscious Port wines and other varietals. In other words: You’re in for a treat.
- Visit the 18th-century Casa de Mateus, considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Portugal. Tour the mansion and its lush gardens, set against the verdant backdrop of the Portuguese countryside.
- Stop at a local restaurant for an included lunch featuring regional food and wine.
- Visit a winery to sample three varietals from some of Portugal’s most prestigious grape-growing areas.
Continue to your hotel in the Douro Valley and enjoy a free evening to relax.
Fátima2 nights
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Coimbra & Fátima
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Drive south and stop to explore Coimbra, a riverfront city that dates to pre-Roman times, on a guided walking tour. Here, you’ll find monuments that tell the story of Roman and Moorish occupation standing alongside manicured parks and gardens.
- Visit Coimbra University—one of the oldest in Europe—and the grand Joanina Library, the latter of which was built in the university’s courtyard atop the ruins of a medieval royal prison.
- Explore the 12th-century Old Cathedral, or Se Velha, which was built when Coimbra was Portugal’s capital.
- Let your eyes linger over the ochre-colored buildings, virtually untouched by time, of Coimbra’s Old Town and waterfront.
Then, continue to Fatima—the central Portuguese town that’s home to a famous Catholic pilgrimage site—and join your Tour Director for some sightseeing.
- Learn more about the site, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared six times in as many months to three young shepherds.
- Enter the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima and explore its grotto.
Enjoy an included dinner in Fatima this evening, served with beer or wine.
Day 7: Free day in Fátima
Included meal: Breakfast
You could spend your free day exploring Fatima on your own—ask your Tour Director for ideas—or you could join us for an optional excursion to rural Portugal. On this jaunt to Batalha, Nazare, and Obidos, you’ll catch a glimpse of ornately decorated monasteries and the massive waves of one of the world’s most famous surf breaks.
Évora1 night
Day 8: Transfer to Évora & sightseeing tour
Included meal: Breakfast
Follow a local guide through the streets of UNESCO-recognized Evora, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its streets, paved with cobblestones, are culturally protected, and cherished by locals. Look all around you for the yellow trim that decorates Evora’s buildings—local lore promises the color protects against evil spirits.
- Take in the region’s whitewashed homes and intricate tilework and make it your mission to uncover as many azulejos as possible. While some are grand displays, others are hidden in plain sight, just waiting to surprise you.
- Pass the remains of the Roman Temple, its 14 Corinthian columns standing solemnly, their capitals mostly still intact.
- Prepare for an encounter with the macabre when you enter the Capela dos Ossos—the Chapel of Bones—a 16th-century shrine lined with the skulls and bones of the interred.
Algarve Region2 nights
Day 9: The Algarve Region via cork factory & olive oil farm
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
As you travel to the sun-soaked Algarve region, stop to learn about locally produced cork and olive oil.
- Learn about cork production with a tour of the Alentejo Cork Factory. Portugal exports more than half of the world’s cork supply, making it essential to the country’s economy.
- Join a local guide for a tour of an olive farm to learn about oil production and the importance of the grove’s ecosystem.
- Sample the farm’s olive oil alongside regional tapas.
Continue to the Algarve region and sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 10: Free day on the Algarve coast
Included meal: Breakfast
Your free day in the Algarve region is up to you. Stay in town and bask in the sunshine or join us for a curated optional excursion to cruise the Algarve’s azure waters.
Lisbon3 nights
Day 11: Lisbon via Sagres, Cape St. Vincent & Vicentine Coast Natural Park
Included meal: Breakfast
As you make your way to Lisbon, discover the white -sand beaches, dramatic coastline, and small towns of the Algarve region, southern Portugal’s beachy hot spot. Between long stretches of seashore, the gentle sway of fishing boats, and jagged rock formations that dot the water, you may find the coastal breeze sweeps you off your feet. Let it.
- Enter Sagres Fortress and admire windswept views of water stretching to the horizon. The area was once considered the end of the world—the last explored point before plunging into the uncharted Atlantic.
- Relish the drama of dizzying cliffs that drop into the Atlantic at Cape St. Vincent, the south westernmost point of mainland Europe. You’re now standing where many explorers stopped, so take a moment and relish your travel boldness.
Continue along the coast to Lisbon via the postcard-pretty southwest Alentejo region, one of Europe’s best-preserved coastlines, then check into your hotel and call it a day.
Day 12: Sightseeing tour of Lisbon
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Get to know Portugal’s alluring capital on a tour with a local guide. Roam historic neighborhoods dotted with pastel-painted buildings while a gentle Atlantic breeze whispers over cobbled streets and plaintive fado music fills the air.
- Admire views of the city from the green expanse of Eduardo VII Park, then pass through the Praca Marques de Pombal—a massive plaza and roundabout with a soaring statue commemorating Lisbon’s reconstruction following a devastating earthquake in 1755.
- Discover the city’s maritime heritage at the Monument to the Discoveries and Belem Tower—paragons of Portuguese Gothic architecture made with local limestone.
- View the outside of the church at the Jeronimos Monastery, built near the launch point of Vasco da Gama’s first journey. You’ll see a prime example of what is now known as Manueline architecture—a whimsical style incorporating maritime elements carved in limestone.
- Try a pastel de nata, the famous Portuguese custard tart.
You can discover the meaning of saudade—the crossroads between nostalgia and longing— if you add an evening fado show to your itinerary and sink into the sounds of Portugal’s traditional music.
Prefer to spend the evening on your own? Ask your Tour Director for a recommendation or head to Graca for a panoramic view of Lisbon from an uphill perch. You can also begin (or end) your night out with a punchy Lisbon specialty: taking a shot of ginjinha, a sour cherry liqueur.
Day 13: Free day in Lisbon
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Vividly hued architecture and impossibly perfect gardens will greet you in Sintra should you choose to add this special excursion to the former playground of Portuguese royalty. If you’d prefer to set out on your own, explore the green expanse of Parque Florestal de Monsanto, a massive swath of protected forest right inside Lisbon’s city limits.
Later, celebrate your trip with your group at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
