Take a full bite out of the cuisine and culture of Peru—one of South America’s most delightful destinations.

The teeming trees of the Amazon Rainforest. The stoic, stepped terraces of Machu Picchu. Though arguably the country’s two biggest draws, Peru contains far more—whether you’re searching for Inca ruins or urban treasures. Traverse the length of the country, from seaside Lima to jungle-bound Iquitos to the rocky shores of Lake Titicaca, drinking up every sight it serves. To make it a true grand tour, add on the extension and plunge deeper into the Andes—where condor-soaring Colca Canyon and the chalk-white streets of Arequipa are waiting.

Itinerary

Lima

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

Welcome to Peru! After arriving in Lima, make the short transfer to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, catch up on sleep, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Lima & cooking class

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Welcome dinner

With its glimmering skylines and UNESCO-recognized historic quarters, the coastal city of Lima’s more than earned its nickname of the Pearl of the Pacific. Today, set out on a walking tour with your group to take it all in.

  • Start at the Plaza de Armas, the historic cradle and modern heart of Lima. Stroll through this manicured plaza, surrounded by gorgeous yolk-yellow buildings, and view a pair of local icons: the Baroque Lima Metropolitan Cathedral and the Neoclassical Municipal Palace.
  • Enter the Huaca Pucllana archaeological site. Now surrounded by the buzzing Miraflores district, this adobe-and-clay pyramid was erected in the sixth century—predating the Inca Empire by almost 1,000 years.
  • Head toward the coast to the Parque del Amor—Love Park—and gaze at the mighty Pacific Ocean as you amble down its boardwalk.
  • Wrap up with a walk through the bohemian Barranco district, where artists, musicians, and other creatives ply their trades. Stop to sample coffees and alfajores—a delectable dessert of rich dulce de leche sandwiched between two shortbread cookies and dusted with powdered sugar.

After spending a free afternoon recharging (or discovering more of Lima’s treasures), come back together with your group for a visit to a local market. Walk among the stalls as you learn about traditional ingredients—then, when your appetite’s at its sharpest, meet up with an expert chef for an interactive cooking class.

Shake up some pisco sours and listen as they teach you how to make ceviche (chunks of fresh fish “cooked” by a citrus-based marinade), lomo saltado (stir-fried beef served with peppers and french fries), and a dessert. Plates prepared, sit down to feast on them for dinner, served with beer or wine.

Please note: The order of today’s events may change. On some departures, the cooking class may take place in the morning, with the sightseeing tour in the afternoon.

Colca Canyon & Arequipa extension

The Andes have more to offer than you might think. Descend into the dizzying depths of Colca Canyon—twice as deep as the Grand Canyon—keeping watch for soaring condors before soaking in volcanic hot springs. Then, wander the chalk-white streets of Arequipa, Peru's sun-drenched second city, and uncover its layered, centuries-old story.

Colca Canyon

Day 13: Colca Canyon via Lake Lagunillas

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you’ll climb higher into the Andes, trading the city behind you for the raw, wind-scoured beauty of the altiplano. En route to Colca Canyon, pause at the shimmering shores of Lake Lagunillas for an included lunch—a moment of stillness in the middle of an awe-inspiring landscape, where the water mirrors the sky and the silence feels almost tangible.

From there, continue your descent into the Colca Valley. Once you’ve settled into your hotel, the rest of the evening is yours to unwind at your own pace—and the on-site hot springs are calling. Slip into the steaming, mineral-rich waters and let the altitude melt away. When you’re ready, gather with your group for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, before heading back to soak just a little longer.

Day 14: Sightseeing tour of Colca Canyon

Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon—and deeper than all but a handful around the world—the Colca Canyon cuts a 60-mile path from the heights of the Andes to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Today, you’ll travel around its edge, stopping at mountain villages, pre-Inca farming terraces, and scenic viewpoints to get the full effect. And don’t forget to keep an eye on the sky: If you’re lucky, you’ll spot an Andean condor—the largest bird of prey on Earth.

Return to your hotel for a free afternoon (maybe try the hot springs if you haven’t yet?) before capping your day with an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Arequipa

Day 15: Arequipa via Mirador de los Andes

Included meal: Breakfast

Bid farewell to the canyon this morning and begin your journey back toward Arequipa. The route takes you up and over the Patapampa Pass—at just over 16,000 feet, the highest paved road in the Americas—where a photo stop at the soaring Mirador de los Andes rewards you with a barren, otherworldly panorama of jagged peaks stretching endlessly into the sky. From up here, the world feels both impossibly vast and quietly humbling. Take it all in before descending into Arequipa and settling into your hotel.

Please note: If you’re prone to altitude sickness, be sure to pack medication, stay hydrated, and take any other precautions needed for the drive up the Patapampa Pass.

Day 16: Sightseeing tour of Arequipa

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner

Peru's volcano-bound second city has earned every one of its superlatives—and today, a local guide will help you understand why. Stretch your legs on a walking tour through its sun-drenched streets before a free afternoon to explore at your own pace.

  • Enter the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, a sprawling Dominican convent that occupies an entire city block. Pass through its peaceful cloisters—beneath domes and flying buttresses—and peek into the centuries-old daily lives of its resident nuns.
  • Walk through Arequipa's UNESCO-listed historic center—dubbed the White City for its buildings hewn from pale volcanic stone—to the Andean Sanctuaries Museum, home to one of Peru's most extraordinary exhibits: Juanita, the Ice Maiden. Sacrificed to the Inca gods atop the Ampato volcano more than 500 years ago, her mummified body was discovered in 1995 and remains remarkably preserved.
  • Indulge in a slice of queso helado. Despite what its name suggests, this beloved local treat contains no cheese whatsoever—just ice cream delicately flavored with clove, coconut, cinnamon, and vanilla.

Your free afternoon is yours to fill as you see fit—wander the market stalls, duck into a cafe, or simply soak up the warm Andean light from a plaza bench. Then, gather with your group one last time for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, served with beer or wine, and raise a glass to the journey you've shared.
