Grand Tour of Italy
15 days | 17 days with Rome extension |
From February 15 to April 6, 2026, the city of Assisi will commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis, who was born and died there. For the first time, the Basilica of St. Francis will publicly display his relics: Hundreds of thousands from around the world will make the pilgrimage, and the church will close most of its grounds to accommodate the event. If you’d like to pay homage, be sure to connect with your Tour Director in the Go Ahead app before your trip—they’ll help you determine if it’s possible.
Immerse yourself in Italy’s history and beauty on a grand journey from Milan to Rome.

It’s easy to fall in love in—and with—Verona. With its maze of ancient Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine architecture, tucked into the bends of the Adige River, no wonder it served as the backdrop for Romeo and Juliet!
- Imagine your own “Oh, Romeo, Romeo” moment with a visit to Casa di Giulietta, the site of the famous balcony built in honor of Shakespeare’s ill-fated lovers.
- Soak in the history of the oldest square in Verona, Piazza delle Erbe. Then, explore the less-crowded Gothic architecture of Piazza Dante—named for Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet who penned the Divine Comedy.
- Marvel at the grandeur of the 2,000-year-old Verona Arena, still in use today, whose pink and white stones have stood witness to gladiator shows, opera productions, and modern concerts.
- Enjoy free time to roam Verona on your own.
Join your Tour Director for a walk through its UNESCO-recognized city center, then continue to Venice. There, you’ll wind down the day with your fellow travelers over an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 5: Sightseeing tour of Venice
Included meal: Breakfast
Surrender to the beauty of Venice’s labyrinthine canals, elegant bridges, and ornate Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Close your eyes and let the sound of lapping water and passing gondolas soothe you, but not for too long—there’s so much to see!
- Marvel at the Bridge of Sighs (or Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian), now a famous Venetian landmark that was built in 1600 to connect the Doge’s Palace to a prison situated just across the canal.
- Enter the stately Doge’s Palace, a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic style that was built in 1340 and served as both the residence of the Doge (the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice) and the seat of the Venetian government.
- Feel the energy of St. Mark’s Square, with its thriving cafes and sumptuous buildings, and marvel at St. Mark’s Basilica.
- Watch a glassblowing demonstration, where artisans keep the Venetian glasswork tradition alive. Observe as they skillfully use the distinctive millefiori technique to create intricate patterns by fusing tiny glass rods.
You’ll meet up with your local guide and explore the heart of Venice on foot and by vaporetto, or water taxi. After, spend a free afternoon walking along the city’s canals, or add an excursion to take to the water aboard a gondola.
Florence3 nights

- Immerse yourself in the Renaissance splendor of the city center as you wander its cobblestone streets.
- Take in the majestic Este Castle—watch out for the moats—and the Palazzo dei Diamanti, named for the 8,000 pink-and-white diamond-shaped blocks that cover its facade.
Then, end the day in Florence and linger with your fellow travelers over an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 7: Sightseeing tour of Florence

Located behind the grand Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens boast extensive greenery, hidden pathways, and stunning sculptures. Wander about this peaceful oasis—or, for something a little more lively, dive into the Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio. Serving locals for more than 100 years, it’s smaller than its more famous counterpart, the Mercato Centrale, and offers an intimate look at how Florentines live. Rome extension
Rome wasn’t built in a day and, if you ask us, it wasn’t meant to be enjoyed in a day either. We know you’ll want more time in the Eternal City. Whether you play time-traveler while hopping between historic sites or live out your best take on Roman Holiday, it’s in your hands, and we’re here to help. Ask your Tour Director for their favorite ways to savor the city—like their secret spot for pasta carbonara—and get going!
Rome2 nights
Day 15: Walking tour of Rome
Included meal: Breakfast
Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans on a guided walking tour of the Eternal City, where you’ll discover its centuries-old squares and fountains.
- Stroll past the Spanish Steps, where Pietro Bernini’s Baroque-style Fontana della Barcaccia has stood since the 1600s, and head to the intricately carved Trevi Fountain. The latter, a Baroque beauty carved of Travertine marble, has served as the dreamy backdrop to La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday. Legend says that if you throw one coin into the fountain, you’re bound to return to Rome.
- Step inside the Pantheon, home to the world’s largest unenforced concrete dome. There, you’ll learn about the engineering skills of the ancient Romans and how they created this well-preserved temple.
- End at Piazza Navona and see Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, commissioned by Pope Innocent X in the 17th century. It symbolizes the four major rivers of the four continents where papal authority had spread at the time.
After your sightseeing tour, track down dinner in a trattoria (specializing in simple dishes), osteria (focusing on light bites and great wines), or traditional ristorante. Want to get your hands dirty? Add our optional excursion to make your own pasta—and eat it, too!
There’s more to Rome than meets the eye, especially beneath the city. For a more macabre moment, descend to the Capuchin Crypt. Intended to evoke the concept of memento mori, these small chapels are adorned with the bones of some 3,700 friars.
Day 16: Free day in Rome
Included meal: Breakfast
You won’t want to skip our guided tour of St. Paul’s Basilica—one of Rome’s four major papal churches. Add it to your itinerary to view the final resting place of St. Paul and take a subterranean journey through Rome’s ancient catacombs.
Celebrate your trip and raise your glass for a farewell drink with your fellow group members on your last night in Italy.
Take it easy over a morning cappuccino or take in the beauty of the Galleria Borghese’s art collection—the day belongs to you.
