Delight in the holiday traditions, unique and shared, of these three Central European cousins.

Whether surrounded by the Austrian Alps or sprawling across the Old Town of Heidelberg, there’s an inherent cheer to Europe’s Christmas markets. And as you sweep from Germany to Switzerland to Austria, you’ll discover what fills these holiday standbys with so much joy. Balance sips of mulled wine with sightseeing in cities like Lucerne and Salzburg, combining winter specialties and evergreen highlights to paint a fuller picture of life in the region. Opt into the extension to Budapest, and you’ll see how the Hungarian capital welcomes the season. (Hint: There are plenty of trinkets and treats to go around.)

Heidelberg Region

Day 2: Arrival in Frankfurt & transfer to the Heidelberg region

Included meal: Welcome dinner

Welcome to Germany! After landing in Frankfurt, transfer to your hotel in the Heidelberg region and settle in. Tonight, you’ll enjoy a welcome dinner in good company as you get to know your Tour Director and groupmates. Raise your glass of beer or wine and get excited for the days to come.

Budapest extension

A little farther down the Danube, the Hungarian capital of Budapest straddles the famous river’s banks. Its hearty cuisine and profound history have enraptured generations of travelers—and after exploring the city on this tour’s extension, you’ll be able to count yourself as part of that lucky group.

Budapest

Day 14: Transfer to Budapest & sightseeing tour

Included meal: Breakfast

Divided by the Danube River, the once-separate towns of Buda and Pest merged in 1873 to form one of Eastern Europe’s most exciting and lively capitals. After driving in from Vienna, you’ll dive into the beautiful architecture, distinct culture, and intriguing history of Budapest alongside a local guide.

  • Trace this nation’s stormy past at Heroes’ Square, a massive plaza adorned with statues of national leaders and the legendary seven chieftains of the Magyars.
  • Tour the lavish interior of the Hungarian State Opera House. Rich golds and crimsons carry the eye to statues symbolizing operatic voices and the four cardinal virtues—prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice—all framed by delicately painted murals.
  • Cross the Danube and ascend Castle Hill via funicular. Topped by the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle, this outcrop was the historic home of the Hungarian Kings for more than 800 years until the title was dissolved after World War I.
  • Make merry into the night at one of Budapest’s Christmas markets. If you’re craving a snack, look for a kurtoskalacs—the local take on a chimney cake, roasted on a spit and coated in cinnamon sugar.

Day 15: Free day in Budapest

Included meal: Breakfast

Hungarian wine country, and all its curiously complex varietals, lies beyond Budapest. Use your free day to roam the restful northern shores of Lake Balaton—one of the nation’s principal growing regions—with your group on an optional excursion, or stay in town and visit the Hungarian Parliament Building on your own. With its symmetrical structure, several spires, and finely detailed facade, the Orszaghaz—as it’s called in the Magyar language—is the country’s most famous landmark. (It’s also Hungary’s biggest building!)

This evening, enjoy a farewell drink and celebrate your trip with your fellow group members.
