Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Munich today.
Munich2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Munich
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Germany! After touching down, transfer to your hotel to get settled in. Then, enjoy a welcome dinner in good company as you get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers. Raise your glass of beer or wine and get excited for the days to come.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Munich
Included meal: Breakfast
Founded in the 12th century and famous as the home of the original Oktoberfest, the Bavarian capital, Munich, is the third-largest city in Germany. This morning, you’ll dig into its highlights with help from a local guide.
- Travel past the Englischer Garten—a gargantuan urban park that counts a Japanese teahouse and a Greek-style temple among its many monuments—and the Schwabing district, formerly home to Munich’s bohemian residents.
- Explore the Marienplatz, Munich’s medieval heart, and see the famed Glockenspiel clock. (Maybe you’ll catch it as it chimes!)
- Walk from the central Odeonsplatz through the manicured grounds of the Hofgarten to tour the Residenz, a museum that once housed the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria.
- End your tour with a taste of the region’s most beloved treat—a fluffy Bavarian pretzel. Then, strike out on your own to make the most of your free afternoon in Munich. (Plenty of parks and museums dot the city: Pull up a map, see what’s nearby, and explore to your heart’s content.)
No trip to Munich is complete without a stein of cold beer—and if you add tonight’s optional outing to your itinerary, you’ll get to clink glasses during a dinner at the legendary Hofbrauhaus.
Bavarian Alps2 nights
Day 4: Train ride to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Start your day at Munich’s Hauptbahnhof, or Central Station; settle in aboard a regional train; and roll southwest through the sweeping Bavarian countryside. Soon, the soaring peaks of the Alps will come into view, and by late morning, you’ll pull into the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
After dropping your hand luggage off at your hotel, join your Tour Director on an orientation walk. Once two different villages, Garmisch and Partenkirchen were forced to unite by Adolf Hitler in advance of the 1936 Winter Olympics. Despite the merger, each side has retained its own distinct character. (Look out for the luftlmalerei murals that line the Ludwigstrasse in Partenkirchen: These folk murals are unique to the region.)
Finally, cap your evening with an included Bavarian dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 5: Free day in the Bavarian Alps
Included meal: Breakfast
The Zugspitze—Germany’s tallest mountain—towers over Garmisch-Partenkirchen, marking the border with Austria. Curious about the view? Our optional excursion can make it happen. Add it to your itinerary to scale the summit via cogwheel train and cable car.
Alternatively, stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and make the most of your free day. One recommendation: Check out the Werdenfels Museum for a primer on the region’s history, then make your way to the ruins of Werdenfels Castle. Built from local limestone and dating to the 12th century, it looks over the town and toward the Wetterstein mountains.
Innsbruck1 night
Day 6: Train ride to Innsbruck
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Bring the German leg of your tour to a close today and travel to Innsbruck via the Mittenwaldbahn. Winding its way from Bavaria into the Austrian state of Tyrol, this scenic train climbs the Northern Limestone Alps before descending into the Karwendel Nature Park—the largest in the country.
Then, after arriving in Innsbruck and transferring to your hotel, meet up with a local guide for a walking tour of the Old Town.
- Glimpse two local legends: the Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof, covered in over 2,600 gilded copper tiles) and the Stadtturm (the City Tower, a 150-foot Gothic sentry post).
- Pass the Hofburg and walk its cobblestoned courtyard. Prized for its architecture, this former Habsburg palace is one of the most important cultural sites in all of Austria.
- Enter the Baroque Cathedral of St. James, an 18th-century structure that houses Maria Hilf (Mary of Succor), one of the most venerated works of Marian art in the Christian world.
Round out your evening with an included Tyrolean dinner, served with beer or wine.
Zurich2 nights
Day 7: Train ride to Zurich
Included meal: Breakfast
Switzerland will welcome you this afternoon—and the OBB Railjet will get you there. This train runs the length of the Arlberg Railway, one of the highest in Europe; after navigating rugged Alpine terrain and crossing the six-mile-long Arlberg Tunnel, your conductor will open the throttle, reaching speeds of more than 140 mph as you skirt the border with Liechtenstein and pull into Zurich.
After checking in to your hotel, feel free to explore Zurich at your leisure. If the weather’s warm, you might go for a float down the River Limmat—locals sometimes climb into inner tubes and ride its gentle current.
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Zurich
Included meal: Breakfast
Split by a river and flanked by its namesake lake, Zurich offers plenty. With help from a local guide (and its ever-efficient transit network), you’ll get a proper introduction to Switzerland’s largest city.
- Catch a tram into the Old Town before climbing to the Lindenhof, a hilltop square with a sweeping view over Zurich’s medieval core, and drinking in the panorama alongside locals lounging in the morning light.
- Enter the Fraumunster—a ninth-century church decorated with stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall—before crossing the Munsterbrucke to spot the iconic twin towers of the Grossmunster.
- Stroll along the Bahnhofstrasse, the city’s elegant main boulevard, and across the cobblestoned Niederdorf district before ending on the Seepromenade—a waterfront path that traces the shores of Lake Zurich.
Europe’s most powerful waterfall lies just north of Zurich—and if you add our optional excursion to your itinerary, you’ll get to see it, along with the medieval core of Schaffhausen for good measure. If you’d rather stay in Zurich, you can fill your free afternoon museum-hopping: The city lays claim to more than 60 permanent exhibitions, including the Swiss National Museum.
Lugano1 night
Day 9: Lake Lucerne boat ride and Gotthard Panorama Express train
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Kick your day off with a drive through rolling hills to Lucerne—an appetizer for your most impressive trek yet. There, you’ll board a restored Belle Epoque paddle steamer for a lovely cruise around Lake Lucerne. Glide past the towering heights of Rigi and Pilatus, cameras at the ready and with a two-course lunch served hot, before returning ashore and transferring to the Gotthard Panorama Express. Linking Switzerland’s Germanic heartland to the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, this panoramic train passes by (or through) some of the country’s most famous landmarks: the Baroque Wassen Church, the UNESCO-listed Castles of Bellinzona, and the original Gotthard Tunnel.
Once you pull into Lugano, freshen up at your hotel before an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: The Lake Lucerne paddle steamer and the Gotthard Panorama Express operate seasonally, from early May to mid-October. If your tour falls outside that timeframe, you’ll instead take a high-speed train from Zurich to Lugano via the Gotthard Base Tunnel—the deepest railway tunnel in the world.
Lake Maggiore2 nights
Day 10: Lake Maggiore via the Centovalli Railway & Domodossola
Included meal: Breakfast
Journey from one lake to another this morning, driving across the Ticinese countryside from Lugano to Locarno—a resort city nestled in the northern nook of Lake Maggiore. There, you’ll start your day in earnest.
- Find a seat aboard the Centovalli Railway. Its name translates to “hundred valleys,” and it’s no exaggeration: As you traverse 32 miles of wild landscapes, you’ll roll over stone arch bridges, along rock-cut ledges, and through chestnut forests.
- Cross into Italy and weave through the Valle Vigezzo. Also known as the Valley of Painters, its scenery has inspired countless artists to take up their brushes over the centuries.
- Deboard in the Piedmontese city of Domodossola, where you’ll have some free time to eat lunch in the medieval Piazza Mercato before hitting the road for Stresa—a town on the Italian side of Lake Maggiore and your home for your last few nights on tour.
Day 11: Free day in Lake Maggiore
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Clustered together in the western reaches of Lake Maggiore, the Borromean Islands are something of a time capsule. They house a 16th-century palazzo, a traditional fishing village, and more—and by adding today’s optional excursion to your itinerary, you’ll get to see it all.
Whether you took us up on our outing or rested at your hotel, you’ll come together as a group and celebrate your trip with a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 12: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the Milan airport for your flight home. Or, give the flight a pass (at least for a couple more days) and explore the jewel of northern Italy by adding the Milan extension.
Milan extension
Rome has its ruins. Florence has the Renaissance. Milan has a little of everything—hulking Gothic cathedrals, Belle Epoque shopping arcades, and a collection of museums that give it a well-earned reputation for culture. Take a couple of days to explore the city; for a more curated look at the city’s haute bona fides, join us on an optional outing to the Teatro alla Scala and Brera.
Milan2 nights
Day 12: Transfer to Milan & sightseeing tour
Included meal: Breakfast
A global capital of fashion. An international mecca of music and theater. Milan might be Italy’s second city, but it holds its own on the world’s stage. Drop your bags off at your hotel, then join a local guide for a tour of Milan’s highlights on foot, by tram, and via metro.
- Catch the tram or metro and ride from your hotel into Zone 1—the city’s centro storico, or historic center.
- Enter the Gothic confines of Milan Cathedral, the biggest church in the country. It took close to six centuries to complete; savor every detail before continuing on your way.
- Stroll the iron-and-glass-domed halls of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest active shopping arcade. Look up, down, and all around—every surface is a thing of beauty.
- Climb to the roof of the Galleria for a walk along the Highline and bask in a view of Milan that most visitors never get to see. Then, return to your hotel via tram or metro and spend the rest of your day how you please.
Day 13: Free day in Milan
Included meal: Breakfast
The Teatro alla Scala and the Brera district are quintessential Milan—cultured, refined, and known the world over. Add our optional excursion to your itinerary to visit one of opera’s great venues before strolling the city’s cobblestone core.
Alternatively, take some time for yourself. If you want a close-up look at one of the greatest works of the Renaissance era, buy tickets in advance for an afternoon entrance to The Last Supper Museum. Its crown jewel: Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece of a mural, depicting Jesus and his followers sharing a meal.
Whatever your choice, rejoin your groupmates in Milan this evening for a farewell drink before calling it a night.

All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code ABT.
- Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Munich and depart from Milan.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own airport transfers.
- When you arrive in Munich, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or one bearing your name. Physical Activity Level
This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.
Tour Pacing
This is a briskly paced tour. Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:
- Two one-night stays
- Some days full of included activities in a row (more if you add excursions)
- Most transportation by train
- Some transportation by motor coach, public transit, and boat
Walking, Terrain & Physical Considerations
- Travelers should be prepared to walk two to three miles per day across city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
- Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
- Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
- Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.
Climate Considerations
- In the summer months (June-September), travelers can expect high temperatures from 70-80 F and lows from 50-60 F with occasional extreme heat waves.
- Please be aware that you will be traveling to altitudes as high as 9,700 feet above sea level. These high altitudes can sometimes cause breathing difficulties for travelers who have heart problems or respiratory ailments. If you suffer from any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor regarding any potential health risks.
Physical Activity & Tour Pacing Questions
- Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
- This tour moves at a steady pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The group can’t miss any activities because of an individual’s needs.
- Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, wheelchairs and walkers will be difficult to use and aren’t recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring any mobility aids with you.

Transportation by Train
- Rail travel is at the heart of this itinerary. Included train rides run from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Innsbruck, Innsbruck to Zurich, Fluelen to Lugano, and Locarno to Domodossola.
- European train stations operate much like airports, with baggage and body scanners common at many terminals. Platforms can span large distances and may require you to manage luggage on escalators or stairs, as porterage isn’t available on train transfers. Keep in mind that trains may stop at stations for only a few minutes, so boarding and deboarding quickly is essential. For full details on what to pack and how to pack it, see the Baggage Allowance & Expectations section of the FAQ.
- The sightseeing tours in Zurich and Milan (on the tour extension) will take place on public metros, trams, and other local trains.
Other Transportation
- All other included transfers throughout the tour are handled by boats and private motor coaches, which use steps for boarding and generally do not offer ramps or lifts.
- Travelers will utilize the public transit trams/metro during the sightseeing tours of Zurich and Milan.
- A scenic boat ride from Lucerne to Fluelen is also included in the price of your tour.
- Travelers are limited to one checked bag and one personal item per person, as storage on trains and motor coaches is limited.
- Make sure all bags are clearly labeled, and always keep valuables, medication, and important documents in your carry-on.
- Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout the tour, as porterage is not guaranteed—this includes at hotels, airports, and train stations.
- Contact your airline(s) directly for size and weight restrictions prior to travel.
- Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. You are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
Train Baggage Allowances & Expectations
- Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto storage racks, sometimes above the seats.
- Only personal items like backpacks or purses are permitted onboard—larger bags will be shipped ahead to each hotel. It is strongly recommended that travelers bring an overnight bag or backpack for use during train journeys.
- Please note that porterage is not provided on any train transfer; travelers are responsible for managing their own bags on trains and at stations.
- We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
- A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
- You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
- It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
- We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single-use plastic waste.
- We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without one built in.
- In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
- Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
- Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three- to four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
- Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
- Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
- Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
- All destinations visited on this tour operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins. You may also use a Type J plug with three small pins in Switzerland and a Type L plug with three small pins in Italy.
- Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
- Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
- We recommend purchasing excursions at least three days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
- Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather, or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
- Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
- At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov.
- If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
- If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
- Even healthy travelers may sometimes experience altitude sickness, a temporary condition that causes symptoms like headaches, fatigue, nausea, and light-headedness. Until your body acclimates to the higher altitudes, we suggest that you drink plenty of fluids and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol.
- Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our Customer Experience Team. Please note that, at this time, not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
- The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
- This tour includes one lunch and five dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water.
- Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet-style with hot and cold options.
- German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
- Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest.
- Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially for strudels and the world-famous Sachertorte cake.
- The Lake Maggiore region sits at the crossroads of Swiss and Italian culinary traditions, with the flavors of Ticino and Piedmont mingling on every menu. Look out for risotto al pesce persico—a creamy perch risotto—alongside polenta, air-dried meats, and locally pressed olive oil. Wash it all down with a glass of Ossola Valley wine or a crisp Ticinese merlot.
- Milan (on the tour extension) is Italy’s culinary capital in disguise. Don’t leave without trying risotto alla Milanese, flavored and colored with saffron, or a plate of slowly braised ossobuco. And when the sun dips low, join the locals for an aperitivo—perhaps a Campari spritz.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12 USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $4 USD per person per day for your driver.
- If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2 USD per local guide.
- Tips can only be paid in cash.
- If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
- The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
- You will use the euro in Germany, Austria, and Italy, and the Swiss franc in Switzerland.
- Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
- We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
- You can use most debit and credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
- Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your Tour Director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
- To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
- Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
- There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
- Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
- Your Tour Director will lead your group. Their role is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each day’s activities, and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and can’t provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.

- All destinations visited on tour are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6 p.m. on tour.

- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormously beneficial socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics.
