Munich3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Munich
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Germany! After touching down, transfer to your hotel to get settled in. Then, enjoy a welcome dinner in good company as you get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers. Raise your glass of beer or wine and get excited for the days to come.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Munich’s Old Town
Included meal: Breakfast
Founded in the 12th century and boasting traditional and cosmopolitan appeal, the Bavarian capital of Munich is the third-largest city in all of Germany. It’s also home to the original Oktoberfest—a massive celebration that, to this day, is the biggest beer festival in the world. This morning, join a local guide for a sightseeing tour and dig into the city’s highlights.
- Pass the 18th-century Englischer Garten—a gargantuan urban park that counts a Japanese teahouse and an open-air, Greek-style temple among its many monuments—and the fashionable Schwabing district, formerly home to Munich’s bohemian residents.
- Walk from Odeonsplatz—Munich’s large central square, named after an adjacent former concert hall—through the well-manicured grounds of the Hofgarten to view the Residenz, once home to the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria.
- Explore Marienplatz, Munich’s medieval heart, and see the famed Glockenspiel clock. Maybe you’ll catch it as it chimes!
- Break for lunch at the Viktualienmarkt, a 200-year-old shopping center, and find the perfect bite to eat at one of its 100-plus stalls.
The afternoon’s yours to explore to your heart’s content. Plenty of parks and museums dot the cityscape: Pull up a map, see what’s nearby, and dive into the best of Bavarian culture. No trip to Munich is complete without a stein of cold beer—and if you add tonight’s optional outing to your itinerary, you’ll get to clink glasses during a dinner at the legendary Hofbrauhaus.
Day 4: Free day in Munich
Included meal: Breakfast
Interested in living your own German fairy tale? Be sure to tack our excursion to Neuschwanstein—the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle—onto your itinerary. If you decide to stay in Munich, dig deeper into its royal heritage with a visit to Nymphenburg Palace, a Baroque beauty set within 490 acres of gardens.
Nuremberg2 nights
Day 5: Nuremberg via Bavarian hops farm
Included meals: Breakfast, Beer tasting, Dinner
Beer is synonymous with Bavaria—something you’ll know if you joined us at the Hofbrauhaus—and the world has the Hallertau to thank. The largest continuous hop-planting region on the planet, this area grows 80% of Germany’s hops. As you drive to Nuremberg, you’ll visit a family-run farm to learn more about the local industry.
- Follow a local guide through the fields, discovering how generations of farmers have cultivated these prized plants.
- Taste a selection of hop-infused treats—from beer and tea to lemonade and pastries—before returning to your bus and hitting the road once more.
After arriving in Nuremberg and checking into your hotel, meet up with your groupmates for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Nuremberg
Included meal: Breakfast
From the Holy Roman Empire to modern-day Germany, Nuremberg has long held a place of importance—and today, you’ll follow a local guide on a sightseeing tour of its Old Town.
- Walk along cobbled streets to Nuremberg Castle and listen as your guide explains how its history is intrinsically tied to the city’s. (In the time of the Holy Roman Empire, newly elected kings were required to hold their first Imperial Diet, or legislative meeting, there.)
- Drink in the view from its hilltop perch—over red-tiled rooftops and stately church spires, all the way to the Pegnitz River—then enter the castle for a close-up look at its Romanesque towers and half-timbered houses.
With another day in the books, choose how to spend your free time. For another helping of quintessentially German architecture—and a mouthwatering taste of Franconian cuisine—add our optional excursion to Rothenburg ob der Tauber to your itinerary. Hanging back in Nuremberg? Take a stroll down Weissgerbergasse: The former center of the city’s leather industry, this cozy, colorful lane boasts cafes, boutiques, and more.
Rhine Valley Castle2 nights
Day 7: World War II tour of Nuremberg & transfer to Rhine Valley castle
Included meal: Breakfast
Despite its undeniable charm, Nuremberg bears the scars of World War II: 90% of the city was destroyed by the conflict’s end. The Palace of Justice, one of the few structures left standing, hosted the historic Nuremberg trials—a symbolic gesture given Nuremberg’s repeated use for Nazi rallies. Today’s outing focuses on that complicated past.
- Enter the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, set in the same building where Nazi leaders were tried for crimes against humanity, and explore the courtroom where they faced justice.
- Browse a series of exhibits that shed light on the trials: the defendants, the proceedings, and the lasting impact they’ve had on international law.
- Head to Nuremberg’s outskirts for a photo stop at the Zeppelinfeld—the sprawling parade grounds where the infamous Nuremberg rallies took place, speeding the Nazis’ ascent to power.
Reflect on all you’ve seen and learned today as you leave Nuremberg. Soon, you’ll arrive at your accommodations: a castle in the legendary Rhine Valley.
Day 8: Free day at Rhine Valley castle & farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
You could easily spend a day relaxing in view of the vineyards that line the Rhine Valley—but if you’re more interested in tasting the wines they create, add our optional outing to your itinerary. You’ll pair a winery visit (complete with a sampling of three vintages and lunch) with a river cruise, a dreamy end to a week in Germany.
Whatever you choose, you’ll reunite with your groupmates this evening for a multi-course farewell dinner, served with beer or wine. Raise a toast to your travels before calling it a night.
Flight Home
Day 9: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or forge ahead into the mystical Black Forest on this tour’s extension. (Exploring Freiburg, visiting a cuckoo clock factory, and touring Hohenzollern Castle? All sweeter than Black Forest cake.)
Black Forest Region extension
Half-timbered houses, turreted palaces, and mystery behind every tree? It could only be the Black Forest. This extension will whisk you to Freiburg—with a stop at Hohenzollern Castle along the way—before delving into some of the area’s beloved traditions. And we mean more than fairy tales: You’ll watch craftspeople blow glass, artisans tinker with cuckoo clocks, and dig into a decadent slice of Black Forest cake before heading home.
Black Forest Region2 nights
Day 9: Black Forest region via Hohenzollern Castle
Included meal: Breakfast
You’ll spend most of your day on the road, trading the quaint villages of the Rhine Valley for the fabled hills of the Black Forest. The scenery stuns—and along the way, you’ll detour into the mountains for an even better view, courtesy of Hohenzollern Castle.
- Hop aboard a shuttle and snake up Mount Hohenzollern to the majestic castle at its peak. Once there, you’ll have some free time to grab lunch and get your first glimpse of the palace’s grounds.
- Follow a local guide into the halls of Hohenzollern Castle—an ancestral refuge that rivals Neuschwanstein in grandeur—and marvel at the treasures housed within. Some of our favorites: the Crown of Wilhelm II, made for the last king of Germany, and a letter from George Washington thanking the House of Hohenzollern for their assistance during the American Revolution.
Say goodbye to this architectural masterpiece and return via shuttle to your bus. Soon, you’ll arrive in Freiburg; check into your hotel room and unwind for the rest of the evening.
Day 10: Sightseeing tour of the Black Forest region
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Sitting on the edge of the Black Forest, the university city of Freiburg im Breisgau—Freiburg for short—is something of a hidden gem. Kick off your final full day on tour by heading into the Old Town, or Altstadt, with your Tour Director for some sightseeing.
- Enter the Munster, Freiburg’s soaring Gothic cathedral. Its 380-foot-tall spire has watched over the Altstadt since the 13th century—even more impressive considering Allied bombers razed swathes of the city during World War II.
- Spy a number of local icons: the candy-colored facade of the Historisches Kaufhaus, the whimsical Neues Rathaus, and the rebuilt Martinstor. And don’t forget to look down! The Bachle—tiny gutters that supplied Freiburg with fresh water—crisscross the Altstadt like miniature canals.
Afterward, board your bus and drive northeast to the town of Wolfach, where you’ll visit the Dorotheenhutte—the last glassworks in the Black Forest still using traditional methods. As you tour the museum and watch artisans create pieces by hand, you’ll learn about the region’s longstanding glassblowing tradition. (You might even buy some glassware to take home as a souvenir.)
You’ll then make your way to Triberg, a village nestled among the Black Forest, for a three-part tour.
- Indulge in a tasting of Black Forest cake—layers of chocolate sponge and whipped cream topped with cherries—before breaking for free time for lunch.
- Spot the world’s largest cuckoo clock, recognized by the Guinness World Records since 1997. Will you be there when it chimes?
- Tour a cuckoo clock factory and gain a deeper appreciation of the intricacy in each of these famous timepieces.
