Snap panoramas of Switzerland’s landscapes from the cabins of its scenic trains.

The pristine greens and blues of Alpine lakes. The snowy barrenness of the Aletsch Glacier. The crooked corners of the Matterhorn. Utopian in its splendor, Switzerland’s scenery stands in a class of its own—and there’s no better way to experience it than by train. From lovely Lucerne, to tiny Interlaken, to the skier’s haven of Zermatt, to the winter wonderland of St. Moritz, you’ll ride the rails between some iconic locales. To top it off, the Mediterranean piazzas and architecture of Lugano await on the extension, showcasing southern Switzerland’s Italian roots.

Itinerary

Overnight flight

Day 1: Travel day

Board your overnight flight to Zurich today.

Lucerne Region

Day 2: Arrival in Zurich & transfer to Lucerne Region

Included meal: Welcome dinner

Welcome to Switzerland—or, as they say in the local dialect, gruezi (“GROO-tsee”)! From the Zurich airport, transfer to your hotel in the Lucerne region and unwind for a spell. Tonight, you’ll get to know your Tour Director and groupmates over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Lugano extension

The largest city in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking south, Lugano draws visitors with its waterfront allure. But there’s more to this place than its namesake lake—you’ll find mazey lanes, reinvigorating parks, and plenty of cultural cachet. Tack this extension onto your tour and see for yourself.

Lugano

Day 12: Train to Lugano & sightseeing tour

Included meal: Breakfast

While some of your groupmates head to the Zurich airport to board a flight home, you’ll go to its train station and walk onto a EuroCity train bound for Lugano. Power along the route and pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel—the longest and deepest traffic tunnel in the world. In time, you’ll cross into the Italian-speaking region of Ticino and deboard at your final destination.

Before going to your hotel, join your Tour Director for a scenic walking tour of Lugano, a gem of a city hugging the mouth of a bay.

  • Smell the (metaphorical) roses in Ciani Park, a lakefront green space crisscrossed by manicured paths and dotted with sculptures and buildings.
  • See the 16th-century Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, home of the largest Renaissance fresco in Switzerland. Attributed to Bernardino Luini, an associate of Leonardo da Vinci, the painting depicts the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
  • Stroll past the elegant Church of San Rocco; walk through the expanse of the Piazza della Riforma; and amble past the shops along Via Nassa.

Sightseeing complete, make your way to your hotel to check in and relax for the evening.

Day 13: Free day in Lugano

Included meal: Breakfast

How will you spend your last day in Switzerland? For something with a little more structure, join us on an optional outing to Locarno, an exquisite resort town in the northeastern pocket of Lake Maggiore. Otherwise, remain in Lugano and let the Alpine breeze blow you any which way.

Tonight, come together as a group for one final toast and cheers to your trip with a farewell drink.

Flight Home

Day 14: Departure

Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)

Transfer across the Italian border to Milan Malpensa Airport for your flight home.
