The 5 best moments from the Wonders of Ancient Israel tour

Karissa ventured to the Holy Land back in October. Here, she describes the five best moments from her tour.

Manager of Travel Operations Karissa ventured to the Holy Land on our Wonders of Ancient Israel tour. “This tour is perfect for learners—anyone who is a history, religion or political enthusiast,” she said. Here, she describes the five best moments from her tour.

Remains at Caesarea, a port city built by Herod the Great

1

Exploring the ancient ruins of Caesarea

Caesarea was a port city built by Herod the Great in about 25–13 B.C. It’s impressive to see how much is still intact today!

Karissa dips her feet in the Sea of Galilee in Israel

2

Taking a dip in the Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Tiberias, is the largest freshwater lake in Israel. We spent about 15 minutes wading in at the end of a guided sightseeing tour. It was refreshing to get my feet wet on a warm day!

The Western Wall in Old Jerusalem, Israel

3

Seeing the Western Wall

Also known as the “Wailing Wall,” this site in Old Jerusalem is divided into two parts: one for men, one for women. There were many people (locals and tourists) at the site, praying at the wall or just sitting nearby and taking it in. Even if you don’t practice Judaism, you can still appreciate this site and take a moment for your own prayer or reflection. It had a calming feeling and was one of the highlights of our time in Jerusalem.

Eating shakshuka on tour in Israel

4

Eating delicious Mediterranean food!

There were so many amazing dishes on this tour, but one of my favorites was shakshouka, a breakfast dish of eggs poached in a spicy tomato sauce. The meals were great for vegetarians but still had plenty of meat options. However, there’s no pork! We ate kosher meals throughout the whole tour.

Golden Dome, Jerusalem, Israel

5

Views of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem’s Old City

The vantage point atop the Mount of Olives gave our group spectacular views of the Old City.
