Day 2: Arrival in Tokyo

Welcome to Japan! After arriving in Tokyo, make the short transfer to your hotel with your groupmates. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, catch up on sleep, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Osaka & Kyoto extension

Osaka’s landmarks and Kyoto’s gardens perfectly complement Tokyo’s electric buzz—but both bring an energy all their own. From the technicolor shine of the Dotonbori district to the tranquil hush of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, these cities show a different side of Japan. And what better place to immerse yourself in the nation’s culture than in its former capital of more than 1,000 years?

Osaka

Day 9: Train to Osaka & sightseeing tour

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting

Today, transfer to a train station and bid Tokyo farewell as you board a high-speed Shinkansen bound for Osaka. Just under three hours later, you’ll reach your final stop—and set right out on a tour with your Tour Director showing you around this cultural hub.

  • Pause for a photo stop at Osaka Castle, a majestic, moat-ringed landmark that has stood since 1583. Explore its scenic grounds and admire the impressive exterior of the castle, a symbol of the city’s rich history and legacy of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the “Great Unifier.”
  • Stroll through Kuromon Market. Dating to the Edo Period, this covered commercial space houses some 150 shops selling everything from street food to clothing. Learn about Japan’s culinary traditions as you walk, then stop to try takoyaki—ball-shaped bites of batter stuffed with diced octopus.
  • Continue to the colorful Dotonbori district, instantly noticeable from the glow of its many neon signs.

Tap into a different aspect of Japanese culture on tonight’s optional excursion and try your hand at taiko drumming before sitting down to a family-style dinner. Or, spend a free evening in Dotonbori—it’s the heart of Osaka’s nightlife and culinary scenes.

Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Kyoto

Included meal: Breakfast

Head from one former Japanese capital to another today and embark on a guided tour of Kyoto—the country’s spiritual center.

  • Begin in the western Arashiyama district, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and wander through its eponymous Bamboo Grove. A thicket of moso bamboo, towering up to 66 feet above ground, funnels visitors down a pathway, making for a breathtaking walk.
  • Walk along the Togetsukyo Bridge. While the current span was completed in 1934, it has existed in one form or another since the ninth century, helping travelers from one bank of the Katsura River to the other.
  • Take in the splendor of Kinkaku-ji—the UNESCO-recognized Temple of the Golden Pavilion so often associated with the city of Kyoto.

Spend the afternoon on the quiet streets of Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest hanamachi, or geisha district. As you go, you’ll learn about this uniquely Japanese tradition—its origins, characteristics, and the training women undergo to earn the title.

Finally, accompany your Tour Director on a walk through the Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s most sacred sites. From the base of Mount Inari, its 10,000 torii gates snake up the slopes, creating tunneled trails that lead visitors to other, smaller sanctuaries. Climb to the Yotsutsuji intersection and take in a panoramic view of Kyoto before making the trip back to Osaka.

Day 11: Free day in Osaka

Included meal: Breakfast

Buddhist shrines, bowing deer, and blissful peace of mind can all be found in Nara. Encounter them yourself by adding today’s optional outing to the city; if you choose to stay behind, dive deeper into Osaka’s past with a visit to the Museum of History, located just outside of Osaka Castle’s outer moat.

This evening, celebrate your trip with your groupmates over a farewell drink.

Flight Home

Day 12: Departure

Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)

Enjoy one final morning in Osaka before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
