London extension

More London? Never a bad idea, especially in a group of solo travelers like yourself. After hitting its biggest highlights on the main tour, see a different side of the city by focusing on the sights and spices of the East End—with a slight detour beforehand. From the secretive surroundings of Bletchley Park to lively Brick Lane, savor your time in town like you would a cup of Earl Grey.

London

Day 11: London via Bletchley Park

Included meal: Breakfast

Before driving to London, detour northwest to the town of Bletchley. Tucked away by a pond, colorful Bletchley Park looks like your typical English country estate—but at the height of World War II, close to 10,000 people worked on its grounds, turning it into the Allies’ main codebreaking outpost. With a local guide, head out to tour the property and reveal some of its secrets.

  • Walk through Bletchley Park’s wooden huts, where members of the Government Code and Cypher School cracked Nazi Germany’s Enigma and Lorenz ciphers. (Some estimate that their efforts shortened the war by two to four years.)
  • See Hut 8, the center of naval codebreaking. Its most famous alumnus: Alan Turing, who built on the work of Polish mathematicians to successfully decode the Enigma cipher—and who was portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch in the Academy Award-winning film, “The Imitation Game.”

After free time for lunch and some self-guided exploration, hit the road for London. Check into your hotel, then spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 12: London’s East End & farewell dinner

Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner

Palace, fortress, prison, zoo—the Tower of London has lived many extraordinary lives since being built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Visit the UNESCO-listed landmark with a guide and see the British crown jewels up close by adding our optional morning excursion to your itinerary.

To understand London like a local, you need to go beyond its tourist sites to places like the East End. Once the city’s poorest neighborhood, it has since blossomed into a thriving cultural mecca and a haven for immigrants escaping persecution. This afternoon, meet up with a local guide in Spitalfields—the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community—for a tour of the district.

  • Pass the Kindertransport Memorial, commemorating the Jewish children who escaped Central Europe before World War II; discover the silk weaving traditions of Protestant Huguenot refugees who fled Catholic persecution in France; and stop at the Brick Lane Mosque to learn of its history as a place of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim worship.
  • Head to Brick Lane—called “Banglatown” by Londoners—to check out its vibrant street art and hear about the Bangladeshi community’s cultural contributions to the area.
  • Finish up with a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine, to celebrate your trip.

Flight Home
