Three cities. Three countries. One holiday’s haunted origin story.
Long before Halloween, there was the festival of Samhain—and this tour traces our modern holiday back to its ancient roots. Begin in London, where a murder mystery dinner at the centuries-old Ashridge House sets the tone for the days ahead. Then, continue to Edinburgh and wind your way through its shadowy closes and underground vaults. You’ll end your journey in Dublin—capital of Ireland, where this tradition first sprang to life—and get a taste of Celtic revelry during the Puca Festival’s Samhain Fire Ceremony.

London3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in London
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to England! After touching down, transfer to your hotel and unwind. This evening, get to know your Tour Director and groupmates over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of the Tower of London
Included meal: Breakfast
Kick off your day in the City of London district, walking from St. Paul’s Cathedral to one of the English capital’s most iconic (and sinister) landmarks—the Tower of London. This UNESCO World Heritage Site holds nearly 1,000 years of stories in its stone walls, and with help from a Blue Badge Guide, you’ll start to unpack each spine-tingling detail.
- Tour the Tower’s sprawling complex, from its medieval battlements to the sites of famous imprisonments and executions. (It’s said that Anne Boleyn’s spirit still wanders these grounds.)
- Marvel at the British Crown Jewels—crowns, scepters, orbs, and other symbols of the monarchy kept under close guard in the Jewel House.
- Browse exhibitions and watch live historical reenactments that place you in the middle of the Tower’s most turbulent moments.
- Step inside the White Tower, the oldest part of the fortress. Built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, it has since functioned as a royal residence, armory, and prison.
The rest of the day’s yours to do with as you please. For something delightfully on theme, seek out the George Inn in Southwark. Dating to 1677, this old coaching house allegedly hosts a ghost or two. Settle in with a pint and soak up the atmosphere, or join us on our optional excursion to Whitechapel—where Jack the Ripper terrorized 19th-century London.
Day 4: Sightseeing tour of Ashridge House & murder mystery dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Spend your morning at your own pace—maybe wandering a favorite neighborhood or sipping freshly brewed tea at a corner cafe—before hitting the road to Berkhamsted. There await the storied grounds of Ashridge House, a 700-year-old country estate that once served as an official residence of King Henry VIII. With a guide in the lead, you’ll tour the property’s period-furnished reception rooms before raising a welcome drink with your groupmates.
As night falls over Ashridge House, things will take a turn for the mysterious with a private murder mystery dinner. You’ll receive your clues, meet your cast of suspects, and begin piecing together the facts of the case—all while enjoying an included meal, served with beer or wine.
Please note: The murder mystery dinner is a late-night event. You’ll transfer back to London afterward.
Edinburgh2 nights
Day 5: Train to Edinburgh
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Board a train this morning, bid England farewell, and set a course for Edinburgh, Scotland. The closer you get to your destination, the more the landscape leans into the mood: mist-draped hills, lochs—or lakes—dotted with ruins, and more. Finally, pull into the Scottish capital and freshen up before tonight’s included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: Porterage isn’t included on train transfers. You must be comfortable lifting and carrying all luggage over steps, onto platforms, and into storage.
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Edinburgh’s dark history
Included meal: Breakfast
Edinburgh has never been shy about its history—and today, you’ll pull back the curtain on its shadowy side with help from a Master Storyteller. Follow your cloaked guide through the city’s Old Town and listen as they unravel centuries of mystery, misdeeds, and misfortune.
- Duck into narrow closes, Edinburgh’s famed alleys, and hear tales that took place in these dark passageways. Murders, body-snatchings—the city’s witnessed many of these and more.
- Descend beneath the streets to the Edinburgh Vaults, subterranean chambers that once housed taverns, workshops, illicit distilleries, and other, more sordid locales.
Afterward, fill your free afternoon as you see fit. For a spooky excursion, head to Greyfriars Kirkyard—a cemetery said to be home to the notorious Mackenzie Poltergeist. Alternatively, add our optional outing to enjoy a night of singing and dancing at a ceilidh (say it “KAY-lee”).
Please note: Today’s sightseeing tour involves walking on uneven cobblestones and descending into underground chambers. We recommend skipping it if you have a fear of tight, enclosed spaces.
Dublin3 nights
Day 7: Flight to Dublin
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, board a flight to Dublin, Ireland. You’ll have plenty of time to dive into the origins of Samhain in the coming days—but for now, take it easy. In the evening, you’ll reconvene as a group for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: Depending on flight availability and scheduling, some departures may fly to Dublin from Glasgow instead of Edinburgh.
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Dublin & Samhain Fire Ceremony
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Settled by the Gaels and disputed over centuries by the Vikings and Anglo-Normans, Dublin traces its history back more than 1,300 years. Today, you’ll peel back some of its layers on a comprehensive tour, led by a local expert.
- Pass by St. James’s Gate Brewery, the legendary 260-year-old brewery behind Guinness dry stout. More than 50 million barrels ship out of the plant each year, making it the world’s most prolific producer of stout-style beers.
- Walk through Old Dublin, then step into St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the country’s largest church. Founded in 1191, it serves as the national cathedral for the Church of Ireland, and its arresting Gothic architecture befits a building of its stature.
- Traverse Dublin’s city center, passing 17th-century St. Stephen’s Green as you go. Afterward, take some time to admire the Georgian architecture of Merrion Square. Another gardened area in the heart of Dublin, it’s been home to some of Ireland’s foremost writers—Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats among them.
- See the dignified facade of Trinity College—Ireland’s oldest university and alma mater of notables from Wilde to Samuel Beckett.
Later, head west into County Meath for an early three-course dinner, served with beer or wine. Appetite sated, you’ll then head to the Hill of Ward—Tlachtga in Gaelic. A key monument in Irish mythology, the hill was also used by druids for Samhain bonfires; today, you’ll take part in this age-old tradition.
- Gather atop Tlachtga for the Puca Festival’s Samhain Fire Ceremony, a ritual that marks the transition from summer to winter.
- Walk down the hill and, as you wait for the flames to arrive, dance along to the strains of traditional Irish music. As drummers play their instruments and fire-dancers put on a show, listen to a narration that puts this ceremony into context.
Please note: During the Samhain Fire Ceremony, you’ll stand for approximately two hours on flat terrain. Additionally, there’s limited seating on Tlachtga.
Day 9: Free day in Dublin
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Want to stay on theme for the last day of your tour? Consider adding our optional excursion to Glasnevin Cemetery—Ireland’s largest—to your itinerary. (You’ll even cap your outing with an included pub lunch.) Or, hang back in town and check out the National Museum of Ireland in your free time. Three of its four constituent galleries can be found in Dublin, spanning everything from military history to Viking artifacts.
Whatever you choose, come together as a group one last time for a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
