Crack a smile, share a bow, and embrace the women that make Thailand special.
In a land known for its grins, you won’t have to wait long before you feel one coming on: They hide in the halls of the Songdhammakalyani Monastery, where nuns from the country’s first all-female priory defy norms, and nestle among the trees of the Araksa Tea Garden, where Indigenous women carry on ancient traditions. As you crisscross Thailand on this specially designed tour, you’ll notice them emerging with each illuminating exploration of womanhood in the country. If, after canal cruises and an elephant sanctuary visit, you aren’t ready to stop smiling, join us on the extension to Laos and visit another corner of Southeast Asia.

Itinerary

Overnight Flight1 night
Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Bangkok today.
Bangkok2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Bangkok
Welcome to Thailand! As you arrive at your hotel tonight, you might receive a wai: a traditional greeting where the hands are placed in a prayer-like position, followed by a gentle bow of the head. Return the greeting (or offer a warm smile back) then settle into your room.
Day 3: Women’s sightseeing of Bangkok & Songdhammakalyani Monastery
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
Hugging the banks of the Chao Phraya River, bustling Bangkok is all action—and with your Tour Director in the lead, you’ll hear the stories of the women, royal and regular, who make the Thai capital tick.
- Explore the sprawling Grand Palace, home to the kings of Siam from 1782 to 1925. The landmark’s exterior elegantly blends traditional Thai architecture with inspiration from the European Renaissance.
- Pass Wat Phra Kaew as you roam the complex. Also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this structure is the spiritual core of Thai Buddhism and a pilgrimage site for the devout.
- Enter the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. One of many institutions bearing the beloved monarch’s name, this collection showcases the beauty and intricacy of Thai clothwork in exhibits ranging from traditional garb to the queen’s personal wardrobe.
Sightseeing complete, board your bus and drive to the nearby city of Nakhon Pathom. Once there, you’ll visit Songdhammakalyani Monastery—a Theravada Buddhist hermitage built by women, for women. Per a 1928 law, it’s still illegal for women to be ordained in Thailand. Sit down with some of Songdhammakalyani’s monks to hear their stories, learn how they were initiated in other countries, and understand life in the nation’s first all-female monastery.
Afterward, head back to your hotel and freshen up. Tonight, you’ll join your groupmates for a welcome dinner, served with beer.
Please note: In order to enter temples and the Songdhammakalyani Monastery, you must cover your knees and shoulders. At temples, you’ll also likely need to remove your shoes.
Chiang Mai3 nights
Day 4: Poomjai Garden Thai dessert workshop, flight to Chiang Mai & Night Market visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
As you make your way out of Bangkok, detour to the leafy limits of Poomjai Garden. For more than a century, this urban oasis has offered respite from the bustle of the city—and you’ll pause there for a sweet treat. Under the guidance of expert instructors, you’ll learn how to make some of Thailand’s most famous desserts: coconut balls, rice dumplings, pudding, and more. (And yes, you’ll get to snack on all of it!)
After your workshop, enjoy an included lunch at Poomjai Garden before flying to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Rose of the North. Take some time to roam your accommodations: With four-star amenities and an on-site spa, the vegan Away Chiang Mai Thapae Resort will serve as your restful base in the city.
Once you’ve recharged, join your Tour Director to explore the Chiang Mai Night Market, a sprawling complex just outside the Old City’s ancient walls. Vendors sell everything from street food to clothing and antiques—and since prices aren’t fixed, it’s a beloved spot among bargain hunters. Shop and haggle at your leisure before turning in for the evening.
Day 5: Doi Suthep
Included meal: Breakfast
Visit Doi Suthep, half of a twin-peaked granite mountain overlooking Chiang Mai, and take a cable car to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Steeped in legend, this temple is one of the most sacred places in Thailand, making it a popular pilgrimage site during the Buddhist holidays of Makha Bucha and Visak. When it’s time to descend, hop back on the cable car—or, if you’re feeling adventurous, choose to hike down.
Dig into dinner—and the unique facets of northern Thailand’s Lanna culture—at a local family’s home on tonight’s optional excursion, or set out on your own to track down a particular dish you’ve been craving. (Don’t leave without trying the khao soi, a fragrant coconut curry noodle soup that’s a Chiang Mai specialty.)
Please note: If you wish to hike down Doi Suthep, you should feel comfortable descending a trail with about 150 steps.
Day 6: Free morning in Chiang Mai & Araksa Tea Garden
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Lunch
Interested in seeing how Chiang Mai earned its nickname? Add today’s optional outing to your itinerary to soar above the countryside in the basket of a hot-air balloon and watch the Rose of the North bloom. Alternatively, spend the morning relaxing and exploring on your own—the city’s beautiful on terra firma, too.
Once you join back up with your group, head into the hills north of Chiang Mai to visit the Araksa Tea Garden. In Thailand, tea production is a predominantly female enterprise: Traditionally, women have made up the bulk of the leaf-picking workforce, and at Araksa, the same holds true. After an included lunch, join them in the fields to learn more about their work.
- Explore part of the 111-acre property—one of the oldest tea gardens in the country—and meet with pickers to uncover the secrets behind plucking the best leaves. Araksa strives to employ women from the local Akha, Hmong, and Lisu hill tribes, part of the company’s mission to empower their neighbors and build community.
- Enter Araksa’s factory for a tour, then stop at an on-site tea house for an organic cuppa paired with traditional snacks before returning to Chiang Mai.
Krabi Region3 nights
Day 7: Flight to Krabi
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, drive to the airport and board a flight to Krabi, a port town replete with postcard views and brimming with laid-back vibes. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in the Krabi region, where limestone karsts rise dramatically from turquoise waters and secluded beaches await. Shake off your travels with an included dinner, served with beer, before retiring for the night.
Day 8: Ban Nai Nang community visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
The rural village of Ban Nai Nang exists in simple harmony with its surroundings—and today, you’ll get to see what makes it a paradigm of community-based tourism.
- Walk through Ban Nai Nang and chat with some of its residents. The village promotes environmental conservation, organic farming, and sustainable living—and the money it earns from travelers like you gets reinvested in the community.
- Gather in an open-air kitchen for a cooking demonstration. Your guides will show you how to make traditional banana cakes: bananas, rice flour, and coconut milk hand-mixed into a dough, wrapped in banana leaves, and steamed over an open fire.
- Visit the Phung Phrohng Bee Farm. Ban Nai Nang’s latest enterprise focuses on protecting indigenous mangrove forests so that local bees have a place to forage, and the results are sweet. (Seriously: You’ll get to try some of the farm’s honey!)
After an included lunch at Ban Nai Nang, return to the Krabi region for a free evening. Interested in a delicious end to an already delectable day? Add our optional excursion to your itinerary, and you’ll head to a women-owned culinary school to learn how to whip up curries and other Thai dishes.
Day 9: Following Giants Elephant Sanctuary
Included meal: Breakfast
In Krabi, and Thailand as a whole, elephants are sacred animals—but despite their iconic status, they’ve been exploited, used in years past for logging and entertainment. Alongside national legislation outlawing their mistreatment, organizations like the Following Giants Elephant Sanctuary have helped buck that trend. Today, you’ll visit this haven and discover how, with backing from World Animal Protection, it operates as a genuine observation-only sanctuary.
- Hear how the organization has worked to create a safe living environment for its resident Asian elephants and an educational experience for visitors.
- Go on an exploration walk and learn about Following Giants’ animals—their harsh pasts and hopeful presents—as you watch them freely roam the forest.
- Take part in a hands-on replanting activity where you’ll create fertilizer seed balls and slingshot them into the surrounding fields. When grown, they’ll provide vegetation for the elephants to eat.
To set sail on the Andaman Sea—and drop anchor for island exploration, swimming, and snorkeling—add our optional excursion and embark on a junk cruise. Choosing to spend your free afternoon in Krabi? Unwind in the Krabi Hot Springs or on Phra Nang Cave Beach, known for its sugar-white sands and yawning sea caves.
Bangkok1 night
Day 10: Flight to Bangkok, klong cruise & cabaret farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
Fly back to Bangkok for your last full day on tour. Once you’re in town, board a motorized longboat and cruise the city’s klongs, or canals. As you snack on local fruits, you’ll wind your way through the city’s web-like network of waterways, and understand firsthand how Bangkok came to be known as the Venice of the East.
Tonight, enjoy a dazzling sendoff at a local venue and celebrate your trip with a farewell cabaret performance. (And yes: Dinner, served with beer, comes with the show!)
Flight Home
Day 11: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your early morning flight home—or sleep in a little longer and hop on a plane bound for Laos’ cultural capital, Luang Prabang, on the extension.
Laos & Bangkok extension
Laos might not get the same press as its more popular neighbors, but don’t be fooled—this tiny country serves a heaping helping of history and intrigue. You’ll float like a dream between the UNESCO-listed city of Luang Prabang and the village of Pak Ou, interacting with the women who call each home. For a more tangible taste of Lao culture, you’ll wrap up your travels with a visit to Ock Pop Tok’s headquarters and watch the hypnotic weaving of the organization’s artisans.
Luang Prabang2 nights
Day 11: Flight to Luang Prabang, Pak Ou & Mekong River cruise
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
From Bangkok, fly to Luang Prabang—a former royal capital rich in architectural and artistic heritage—with your Tour Director. Touch down, then drive out of the city to the traditional Lao village of Pak Ou. A family will welcome you into their home and lead you to their garden, where you’ll sample a collection of natural teas and crunchy snacks.
Hands and hearts warmed, you’ll walk through Pak Ou to the banks of the Mekong River. Board a motorboat and wave goodbye as you push off to cruise back to Luang Prabang. Keep your eyes peeled and cameras out: The sunset will illuminate the cliffs and villages lining your route home.
Day 12: Walking tour of Luang Prabang, Ock Pop Tok & Kuang Si Waterfalls
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Luang Prabang’s collection of Lao architecture, European colonial buildings, and gold-clad Buddhist temples earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site honors. With your Tour Director in the lead, venture out into the city for a guided walking tour.
- Pass the golden facade and pointed gables of Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, the largest Buddhist temple in the city.
- Enter the Royal Palace Museum, set in the lavish residence of the last Laotian monarchs. Among other exhibits, you’ll view the Phra Bang, a statue of the Buddha cast in an alloy of bronze, silver, and gold. (It’s the most sacred Buddha image in Laos, and lent its name to Luang Prabang.)
- Wander along the Mekong waterfront and pop into shops and restaurants at your leisure.
After your sightseeing tour, take a short trip to Ock Pop Tok. Translating to “East Meets West,” this organization was founded by two women—one Lao, one British—at the turn of the millennium. Its mission is two-fold: to promote and preserve Laos’ textile traditions, and to help local women achieve viable careers as skilled artisans.
- Share an included lunch with your group at an on-site restaurant, then head to the Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Centre. Listen as a guide walks you through the weaving process from start to finish—from tending silkworms to dyeing cloth.
- Watch as master craftswomen create natural dyes by hand, draw beautiful batik patterns, and weave textiles from tinted bamboo.
Before returning to your hotel, make one final stop at the Kuang Si Waterfall, a three-tiered cascade tucked into the Laotian hills. Follow your groupmates along a 1.5-mile loop trail and watch as turbulent waters tumble 200 feet into a turquoise pool.

- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
