Itinerary

Overnight flight1 night
Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Madrid today.
Madrid3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Madrid
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Bienvenidos! Welcome to Spain. After clearing customs, make your way to your hotel. You’ll have time to relax—and perhaps get a head start on sightseeing—before tonight’s welcome dinner. Get to know your fellow female travelers over your choice of beer or wine, then call it a night.
Day 3: Women’s sightseeing tour of Madrid
Included meal: Breakfast
Spain’s beating heart, the cosmopolitan capital of Madrid has anchored the Iberian Peninsula since the 8th century A.D. It’s a massive place, but with a little help from a local guide, you’ll get a comprehensive introduction to the city and the women who’ve helped it grow.
- Pass by the Temple of Debod, a reassembled temple from ancient Egypt, given as a gift to Spain in recognition for the country’s aid in saving the Abu Simbel temples from destruction. Madrid’s skyline unfolds from this vantage point, a serene oasis amidst the city.
- View the Royal Palace, Spain’s largest royal residence and a Neoclassical stunner complete with grand facades and sprawling gardens.
- Drive to the Plaza de los Guardias de Corps and stop at the Clara Campoamor sculpture. This weathered bust depicts the mother of the Spanish feminist movement: An elected official before she had the right to vote, she played a pivotal role in securing female suffrage. Hear her story—and that of the novelist and activist Emilia Pardo Bazán—before moving on.
- Enter the Liria Palace for a self-guided tour. The private residence of the Dukes of Alba also doubles as an art museum featuring works from Goya, El Greco, Rubens, and others. Take in this century-spanning collection, and the Neoclassical palace that houses it.
Nightlife in Madrid starts late and goes well into the early hours. Hit the streets for the classic 10 p.m. dinner or add our optional excursion to drink in the pasos (steps) and gritos (cries) of a fiery flamenco show.
Day 4: Free day in Madrid
Included meal: Breakfast
For an extra helping of high culture, spend your free day in Madrid’s UNESCO-listed Golden Triangle of Art—a trio of museums that includes the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the beloved Prado. For something more peaceful, amble through El Retiro Park—a huge swath of green space filled with ponds, rose gardens, and more.
Interested in adding a UNESCO World Heritage Site to your itinerary? Join our optional trip to Toledo—a multifaceted town revered for its swordsmithing and known as the City of Three Cultures for the way Christians, Jews, and Muslims peacefully coexisted there in the Middle Ages.
Cordoba1 night
Day 5: Train ride to Cordoba & sightseeing tour
Included meal: Breakfast
Settle aboard a high-speed train and enjoy the ride to the Andalusian city of Cordoba, once an important Roman outpost and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages. After pulling into your station, strike out into town with a local guide for a sightseeing tour.
- Pass by the Roman Bridge. Constructed in the first century B.C., this stone span crosses the Guadalquivir River and stuns with its 16 irregularly patterned arches.
- View the medieval Albolafia, one of several historic watermills in the city. A remnant of the city’s Islamic era, it could date as far back as the ninth century—though its exact history is still not clear.
- Walk along the serpentine streets of the Old Town to reach Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter. Ancient synagogues nestle next to Andalusian architecture, standing as a testament to the city’s multicultural heritage.
- Enter the Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the eighth century as a mosque and then converted into a cathedral during the Reconquista. Peep its graceful arches, intricate mosaics, and peaceful courtyard.
Please note: Porterage is not included for the train transfers. Travelers must be comfortable lifting and carrying all luggage over steps, onto platforms, and into storage.
Seville2 nights
Day 6: Seville via olive oil farm
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Leave Cordoba and make your way to Seville, stopping en route to discover some of the flavors of Andalusia at a hacienda, or family-owned estate, that specializes in olive oil.
- Join a local guide for a tour of the farm’s groves, mill, and cellar to learn about the delicate art of olive cultivation—from planting to harvesting to pressing.
- Drizzle orange-infused olive oil onto a scoop of chocolate gelato for an unexpected flavor combination.
- Enjoy free time to shop for souvenirs that’ll let you savor the memories of your vacation (literally!).
Continue to Seville and sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 7: Sightseeing tour of Seville
Included meal: Breakfast
Uncover the beauty of Seville, Andalusia’s capital city, on a guided sightseeing tour of its historic churches and Moorish buildings.
- View the tiled pavilion of the Plaza de Espana, a massive, semi-circular brick structure built in the Renaissance and neo-Moorish styles for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition.
- Walk through the orange tree-filled Murillo Gardens and into the Barrio de Santa Cruz, a popular neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, and tiled benches.
- Spot Seville Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic churches in the world. Awesome in scale, this 16th-century architectural marvel also contains artworks by Goya and Murillo, as well as an enormous and richly decorated central altarpiece. (See if you can visit during your free time!)
- Enter the Royal Alcazar, a palace that was once home to the Catholic monarchs King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I.
What’s a trip to Spain without a deep dive into tapas culture? Opt into an evening tasting tour to journey through the Triana neighborhood, stopping to sip and savor as you go. Prefer to explore on your own? Head to a rooftop bar, take an evening stroll along the beautifully lit Guadalquivir River, or find a night market for authentic street eats and live music.
Lisbon3 nights
Day 8: Lisbon via Extremadura wine region
Included meals: Breakfast, Wine tasting
Today, travel north out of Andalusia into Extremadura, the least densely populated of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities. Those sparse expanses also house the country’s fourth-largest wine region, and today, you’ll stop at Bodegas Coloma for a tasting. Set up in a red granite castle, this family-owned, woman-run vineyard has created quality whites and reds since 1966; try a trio of their signature vintages before hitting the road once more.
After some free time in nearby Badajoz—a fortress city with Roman and Moorish roots—cross into Portugal and continue to Lisbon. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 9: Sightseeing tour of Lisbon
Included meal: Breakfast
Mazy neighborhoods dotted with pastel buildings. Gentle Atlantic breezes whispering over cobbled streets. Alluring Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and largest city, and with a guide in the lead, you’ll dive into its past.
- Admire views of the city from the green expanse of Eduardo VII Park, then pass through the Praca Marques de Pombal—a massive plaza and roundabout with a soaring statue commemorating Lisbon’s reconstruction following a devastating earthquake in 1755.
- Discover the city’s maritime heritage at the Monument to the Discoveries and Belem Tower—paragons of Portuguese Gothic architecture made with local limestone.
- Loop back to central Lisbon and visit A Avo Veio Trabalhar. Portuguese for “Grandma Came to Work,” this creative hub brings elderly Lisboetas together to make art and find community. Learn about the collective, then look on as its members put on a weaving demonstration.
Looking to add some flavor to your itinerary? Look no further than this afternoon’s optional pastry class at the female-owned Lisbon Cooking Academy. Roll up your sleeves and learn how to craft the perfect pastel de nata, Portugal’s iconic custard tart.
Prefer to spend some time alone? Pop into a pastelaria, or pastry shop, on your own and enjoy a pastel—or five. For a savory alternative, track down pasteis de bacalhau, salt cod mixed with potato and seasonings and fried to golden perfection.
Day 10: Free day in Lisbon
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Vividly hued architecture and impossibly perfect gardens will greet you in Sintra should you choose to add this special excursion to the former playground of Portuguese royalty. If you’d prefer to set out on your own, explore the green expanse of Parque Florestal de Monsanto, a massive swath of protected forest right inside Lisbon’s city limits.
Later, toast to new friendships and memories as you celebrate your trip at a farewell dinner. Share stories, laughs, and one final glass of beer or wine before heading back to your room.
Flight Home
Day 11: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Leave Lisbon today—either by air if you’re heading home, or by bus if you’re staying on the trip’s extension. Choose the latter, and you’ll explore the riverside of Porto, with a stop in Coimbra for good measure.
Porto extension
A UNESCO-listed historic core. A plethora of cellars specializing in Port wine. Add in the decorated legacies of its daughters, and visiting Porto is a sweet affair—the perfect complement to a jaunt across the Iberian Peninsula. Throw in a detour to Coimbra and an optional outing to Guimaraes, and this extension is a great way to get even more Portuguese herstory under your belt.
Porto3 nights
Day 11: Porto via Coimbra
Included meal: Breakfast
Bid Lisbon adeus, or goodbye, and make your way north to Porto. En route, you’ll stop in the city of Coimbra for a guided walking tour. Portugal’s fourth-largest population center dates to the first century B.C., and monuments that tell the story of Roman and Moorish occupation stand alongside manicured parks and medieval streets.
Roam its mazy lanes with your local guide, maneuvering between ochre-colored buildings, and enter the University of Coimbra. The oldest institute of higher learning in Portugal and one of the longest continually operated in the world, it houses a flourishing botanical garden and the Joanina Library, filled with 16th-century tomes and other literary treasures.
After exploring its Old Town and riverfront, you’ll have free time for lunch before returning to your bus and continuing to Porto. Once there, take the rest of the day to relax, or head out on your own for some exploration.
Day 12: Sightseeing tour of Porto
Included meal: Breakfast
Navigate narrow streets and old-world architecture like a true tripeiro, or Porto resident, as you follow your local guide on a sightseeing tour. Keep an eye out for azulejos—the intricately painted tiles that adorn church facades, train stations, and many other delightful nooks and crannies.
- Pass citywide icons, such as Liberty Square’s ornate Neoclassical buildings and Carmelitas Church’s fanciful facade.
- Make friends with the Baroque-style Clerigos Tower. You’ll be able to spot this soaring steeple as you traverse Porto—use it as your North Star.
- Take a scenic drive through waterside neighborhoods and along the Douro riverfront. Watch for fishing boats on the water and churches tucked along the cobblestone streets.
- Step inside the city’s famed, Neoclassical Stock Exchange Palace. Though mostly completed by 1850, interior decoration took another 60 years, resulting in a combination of multiple opulent styles—Neo-Palladian, Moorish revival, and others.
You can’t spell “Porto” without “Port,” and this world-famous fortified wine is synonymous with the city. Add our optional outing to your itinerary to strike out into the Douro Valley for a tour of one of the area’s prestigious wine cellars (complete with a tasting, of course).
Not joining the excursion? Spend your free afternoon sampling the Ribeira district’s food scene. Try hunting down a francesinha: This hearty, tomato sauce-soaked take on the French croque monsieur is a Portuense specialty.
Day 13: Free day in Porto
Included meal: Breakfast
Use your free day in Porto to recharge with fresh produce and local snacks from Bolhao Market—it’s been serving locals since 1914. You can also head to the Crystal Palace Gardens for a scenic (and fragrant) vantage point overlooking the city and Douro River.
Prefer to leave the planning to us? Today’s optional excursion highlights the medieval city of Guimaraes. Add it to your itinerary to roam its UNESCO-listed historic center—and to see how women shaped the birthplace of Portugal.
This evening, enjoy a farewell drink as you celebrate your trip with your fellow group members.
Flight Home
Day 14: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Porterage services are not offered on train transfers and luggage storage on trains is extremely limited. Please keep in mind that trains may only be stopping at the stations for a few minutes; speed with loading and unloading may be imperative.

- Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
- In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
- Cuisine in Spain’s southern Andalusia region is heavily influenced by surrounding countries, and has many Arabic elements. Kebabs are popular, and desserts are often prepared with almonds, honey, and cinnamon. Be sure to try Serrano ham, which is considered a regional delicacy, as well as the famous chilled soup known as gazpacho.
- Portuguese food is fresh, hearty, and delicious. Try seafood stew cooked in a cataplana, a shell-shaped copper pan, or the national dish, bacalhau (salted cod). A couvert, or simple plate of bread, butter, and olives, is often served when you sit down to a meal—while it is free in many restaurants, some will add a charge to your bill for it.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $4USD per person per day for your driver.
- If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.

- You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
- Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.

- Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
- There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
