Itinerary

Overnight Flight1 night
Day 1: Travel Day
Board your overnight flight to Kigali today.
Kigali2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Kigali
Welcome to Rwanda! After arriving in Kigali, transfer to your hotel with your groupmates. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat at your hotel, catch up on sleep, and look forward to the rest of your journey.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Kigali
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch
Brush off yesterday’s travels with a free morning in the comfort of your hotel. Then, meet up with your Tour Director and groupmates for an included lunch and take the time to get to know each other. Bellies full, you’ll strike out on a tour of Kigali—Rwanda’s capital and largest city—stopping at two solemn sites.
- Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a museum dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Here, you’ll learn the history of the tragedy, pay respects to the more than 250,000 victims interred there, and gain a deeper understanding of the country’s journey toward reconciliation and peace.
- Enter either the Ntarama or Nyamata memorial sites. These former churches were the scene of two particularly grisly episodes of genocidal violence against the Tutsi ethnic group; walk among the exhibits and reflect on the gravity of all you’ve seen.
Afterward, either return to your hotel or take the rest of the day to explore Kigali on your own. Shopping centers like Kimironko Market and the Caplaki Craft Village sell everything from local spices to handmade crafts—but for something more peaceful go for a simple stroll down any of the city’s leafy boulevards.
Volcanoes National Park Region3 nights
Day 4: Question Coffee tasting, EF Upskilling chat & transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Lunch, Dinner
The “land of a thousand hills,” as Rwanda’s known, boasts rich volcanic soil and ample sunshine. And thanks to its strings of dormant volcanoes and lofty mountains, the country sits at an average elevation of more than 5,200 feet, making it an excellent place to grow coffee. As you leave Kigali this morning, stop at Question Coffee—a women-run specialty roaster and cafe—to taste the difference.
- Relax as skilled baristas prepare a cup of home-roasted Rwandan coffee, then sip as you make conversation with them and your fellow travelers.
- Learn how the cafe invests in female coffee growers, supports local farms, and promotes sustainable practices in the industry as a whole.
Afterward, head to a local restaurant to meet graduates of EF Education First’s Tourism Upskilling Program. Created in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board and the Mastercard Foundation, this five-year initiative—dubbed Hanga Ahazaza, or “Create the Future” in the local language—helped young Rwandans boost their English, communication, and hospitality skills. Over an included lunch, you’ll hear from graduates about their experiences in the program and how their homeland has evolved.
Say your goodbyes, then continue to the Volcanoes National Park region, where you’ll check into your hotel. Tonight, sit down to an included dinner, served with beer or wine, before calling it a night.
Please note: Depending on scheduling constraints, you may visit Question Coffee on day 3 instead.
Day 5: Volcanoes National Park gorilla trek
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Punctuated by the peaks of the Virunga Mountains, the stunning slopes of Volcanoes National Park shelter some very important residents—endangered mountain gorillas. Today, you’ll set out into the park’s dense forests and bamboo thickets on a guided gorilla trek; with a little luck, you’ll chance across some of these gentle giants in their natural habitat and have the opportunity to see them up close.
- Meet your naturalist guide and pay attention—they’ll introduce you to the park’s gorilla population, highlight specific families, and relay general information about your upcoming trek.
- Board your 4x4 land cruiser and head into the park, then hop off and venture on foot into the wilds of the Virunga Mountains.
- Follow your guide as they track gorillas along the mountainside. As you keep your eyes peeled, keep your ears open: Roughly 200 species of birds call Volcanoes National Park home, and their sweet songs will serve as the soundtrack to your quest.
Wrap up your trek and return to the park’s main lodge, where you’ll sit down to an included lunch. Then, spend the rest of the day unwinding. Before heading to bed, join up with your group once more for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 6: Gorilla Guardians & Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund visits
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today, you’ll spend the morning exploring the intersection of nature and culture at Gorilla Guardians. This village, on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park, houses a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the local population of mountain gorillas and improving the daily lives of reformed poachers.
- Arrive at Gorilla Guardians and begin your deep dive into Rwandan traditions. As you meet the villagers, you’ll be introduced to their lifestyle by way of their customs, dances, and crafts—and have the chance to participate yourself.
- Learn about the organization’s conservation and enterprise development initiatives, and see how they help local families earn a living.
After exchanging farewells, head to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund—the headquarters of the world’s longest-running field study of wild mountain gorillas. Explore the center’s state-of-the-art exhibits to discover the organization’s impact on gorilla habitat preservation and learn even more about these majestic creatures.
Finally, return to your lodge to freshen up, then rejoin your group for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Akagera National Park2 nights
Day 7: Transfer to Akagera National Park & game drive
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, you’ll trade your bus for 4x4 land cruisers, and trade undulating mountains for the sweeping plains and vast swamps of Akagera National Park. This preserve, central Africa’s largest protected tract of wetlands, was once decimated by poaching—but thanks to multinational efforts, it now sustains burgeoning populations of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and more.
Make your way through the countryside to Akagera, stopping in Kigali for an included lunch. Then, embark on an afternoon game drive, where you’ll get your first glimpse of the park’s diverse wildlife and landscapes. Ready for more? It’ll come tomorrow: Until then, enjoy an included dinner, served with beer or wine, and settle into your accommodations for the evening.
Day 8: Akagera National Park game drive
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After getting a taste of a game drive yesterday, you’ll spend a full day rumbling across Rwanda’s premier safari destination. Elephants, lions, giraffes, and hippos all freely roam Akagera’s 430-square-mile expanse, and you won’t want to blink and risk missing a moment.
Midway through your adventure, stop for a packed lunch, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African bush. Once you’ve refueled, continue forging your way across the park’s varied landscapes. Keep note of everything you see—you’ll want to chat about it with your groupmates over an included dinner, served with beer or wine, back at your lodge tonight.
Overnight Flight1 night
Day 9: Transfer to Kigali & departure
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell lunch
On your last full day in Rwanda, swap the stretches of its national parks for the sprawl of its capital city and return to Kigali. Once you arrive, visit the Nyamirambo Women’s Center; after a scrumptious included lunch, get to know this local NGO and the incredible women running it.
- Trace the center’s history from humble beginnings—launched as a self-help group by 18 Rwandan women in 2007—to the present day and familiarize yourself with its mission. Originally, the organization served to combat gender-based violence, discrimination, and inequality. Now firmly established as an NGO, it educates and provides free vocational training to women to expand their employment opportunities.
- Walk through Nyamirambo, an energetic neighborhood dotted with mosques and enlivened by street art, and meet some of its residents. Strike up conversations to learn more about their daily lives.
Finally, transfer to the airport for your flight home. You may depart late at night or early the following morning—or in the afternoon if you book the extension to Kenya. (Take off for Nairobi, and you’ll get the chance to spot the rest of the Big Five game animals in Amboseli National Park.)

Physical Activity Level
This is a very high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.
Tour Pacing
This is a very fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:
- Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
- Some transportation by 4x4 landcruiser safari vehicles
- Some transportation by motor coach
Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements
- When walking occurs during sightseeing tours it is over mostly flat terrain, some paved roads, unpaved trails, and dirt paths.
- During the Gorilla trek, travelers should be prepared to trek across moderate to challenging terrain along the slopes of the mountains through the thick tropical rainforest. You should expect an off-trail experience, crossing over logs, rocks, and streams for up to 5 hours.
- Travelers should feel comfortable stepping up and down or climbing a small ladder to get in an out of the 4x4 safari vehicles.
- Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
- Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.
Climate Considerations
- Temperatures are consistent year round, but vary significantly morning to afternoon, especially at higher altitude regions.
- Broken into four climatic regions, the Eastern Plains, Central Plateau, the Highlands, and Lake Kivu, Rwanda enjoys a tropical highland climate with mild temperatures year-round, thanks to its high elevation.
- Travelers may encounter hot and humid conditions during the gorilla trek.
- Travelers should be prepared for cold mornings and evenings (40sF-50sF) with mild afternoons of 70F-mid 80sF.
- Kenya (on the tour extension) experiences two rainy seasons, masika, which is mid-March through May, and vuli, November-December.
Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions
- Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
- This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
- Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
- If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!

- During game drives, you will be traveling in a specially equipped safari van, which have high step(s) to board the vehicle. The vehicle is open, allowing for panoramic views.
- Game drives can be long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride and the impact that may have on a body.

- Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag
- Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
- We recommend packing loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
- During the gorilla trek, we recommend long-sleeved shirts, pants (preferably waterproof or water-resistant), gardening gloves, thick socks, waterproof hiking boots, and a wide-brim hat.
- You may bring collapsible trekking/walking poles to offer you additional support and comfort during the gorilla trek.
- Wear muted colors for the gorilla trek and game drives, as bright clothing may scare animals away and blue or black clothing attracts tsetse flies.
- Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
- Pack a swimsuit as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
- Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
- Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.

Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
- Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
- Some hotels are designed so that each room feels like its own secluded cabin and customers will need to walk outside to reach the common areas.

That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
