Ireland, England & Scotland for Women: Dublin to Edinburgh
12 days | 15 days with London extension |
- Group size
- 15–28 travelers
- Activity level
From traditional storytellers to revolutionary suffragettes, follow women’s history across three nations.
In stability and struggle, the past and the present, Ireland, England, and Scotland have persisted. And while royals like Mary, Queen of Scots, may get the credit, everyday women have had just as great an impact. As you travel from Dublin’s Trinity College to Edinburgh’s Royal Mile on this specially designed tour, you’ll discover how labor organizers like Rosie Hackett and writers like the Brontë sisters shaped culture at home and abroad—all alongside a group of intrepid women. If you add the extension, you’ll continue that exploration in London, where monuments to scribes and suffragettes dot the city.

Itinerary

Overnight Flight1 night
Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Shannon, Ireland, today.
County Limerick2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Shannon & transfer to County Limerick
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Failte! (Pronounced “FALL-cha,” this expression means “welcome” in Irish, and you might hear it a fair bit over the next few days.) Transfer from the Shannon airport to your hotel in County Limerick and get settled. Later tonight, you’ll get to know your Tour Director and fellow female travelers over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Cliffs of Moher & the Burren Farm Experience
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, redefine “taking the scenic route” as you make for the coast of County Clare. Your first destination: the Cliffs of Moher. (Sheer cliffs stretching into the distance, crashing waves below—you know this one.) Follow your Tour Director down paved walkways and trace these weathered promontories, jaws dropped in awe, before returning to your bus.
Relive that electrifying experience as you roll into the Burren, a lunar-like limestone plateau punctuated by bursts of wildflowers. Within this national park, you’ll stop at a working beef farm for your first taste of Irish traditions.
- Climb aboard a Land Rover and survey part of the farm’s 500-acre property. Ancient woodlands, archaeological sites, glimmering lakes—you’ll see it all.
- Park out on the grounds and set up for a rustic picnic. A locally sourced menu—featuring vegetables, cheeses, seafood, and the farm’s very own beef—awaits your taste buds.
Please note: In the event of inclement weather, the picnic lunch will take place in the farm’s barn.
Dublin2 nights
Day 4: Dublin via Rock of Cashel
Included meal: Breakfast
Today, you’ll drive from County Limerick to the Irish capital of Dublin—but en route, you’ll detour into County Tipperary for a tour of the Rock of Cashel. Home to more than 1,000 years of history, this 360-foot-tall outcrop guards a collection of Celtic, Christian, and Viking ruins and is one of Ireland’s premier attractions.
After, continue rumbling toward Dublin, where you’ll have free time for the rest of the day. If you’re in the mood for some quintessential local merriment, add our optional evening excursion to watch the thundering rhythms and precise footwork of Irish dance. (You might even pick up some fancy steps yourself!)
Prefer a quieter night? Use your free time this evening to go for a sunset stroll along the River Liffey, or head to Ha’Penny Bridge for a breathtaking nighttime view of the city.
Day 5: Women’s sightseeing tour of Dublin
Included meal: Breakfast
Settled by the Gaels and disputed over centuries by the Vikings and Anglo-Normans, Dublin traces its roots back more than 1,300 years. Today, you’ll tour it and examine how local women helped mold the city and the republic it anchors. (Keep an ear out for good craic, Ireland’s trademark acerbic banter.)
- Pass by St. James’s Gate Brewery, the legendary 260-year-old brewery behind Guinness dry stout. More than 50 million barrels ship out of the plant each year, making it the world’s most prolific producer of stout-style beers.
- Feast your eyes on the verdant, flowering landscaping of St. Stephen’s Green and pay tribute to Constance Markievicz at her statue. A staunch fighter for Irish independence, she was the first woman elected to the U.K. House of Commons—but refused the position in accordance with her beliefs.
- View the Rosie Hackett Bridge and hear the story of its namesake, who helped found the Irish Women Workers’ Union and who, alongside Constance Markievicz, took part in the Easter Rising against British rule.
- Enter Trinity College, alma mater of notables from Veronica Guerin to Olivia Grosvenor, to admire the famous Book of Kells—a beautifully illuminated manuscript containing the four Celtic Gospels in Latin.
If you add our optional outing to your itinerary, you’ll spend your afternoon in County Wicklow, visiting gorgeous Glendalough—the well-preserved ruins of a once-influential abbey. If you’re staying in town, consider heading down to the Temple Bar district and breathing in its lively ambiance.
Manchester1 night
Day 6: Ferry to Holyhead & transfer to Manchester
Included meal: Breakfast
This morning, board a ferry and cross the Irish Sea to Holyhead, Wales. After docking, you’ll hop on a bus and head to Manchester, the birthplace of both the Industrial Revolution and England’s female suffrage movement.
Once you arrive, stretch your legs—and broaden your mind—with a visit to the People’s History Museum. Besides illustrating Mancunian and British working-class life, this exhibition touches on the island-wide fight for equality, labor rights, and more.
- Learn about political events like the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where armed cavalry—privately hired by wealthy lords—charged into a crowd of demonstrators protesting for voting rights.
- Dive into the history of the Match Girls’ Strike, organized in 1888 to protest poor wages and working conditions, and discover how it led to the formation of the largest female union in the country.
- Hear the story of Emmeline Pankhurst, a 20th-century activist whose radical tactics helped secure women’s right to vote. (Does that name sound familiar? Meryl Streep played her in the 2015 film “Suffragette.”)
Finally, check into your hotel and unwind for the evening.
York2 nights
Day 7: Transfer to York & sightseeing tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Leap from the Industrial Age to the medieval era today and drive from Manchester to York. You’ll find yourself in a city founded by the Romans in 71 A.D.; soak in all its historic charm on a sightseeing tour.
- Visit the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey and the Shambles, a medieval street famous for its narrow, cobbled lanes and overhanging timber-framed buildings.
- See York Minster, a massive Gothic cathedral (one of the largest in Northern Europe) that houses the world’s largest collection of medieval stained glass.
- View the Roman wall, the oldest section of the city’s historic fortifications. (Did you know you can walk atop the York City Walls? If you choose to do so, you can catch a glimpse of the River Ouse and York Minster.)
Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.
Day 8: Free day in York
Included meal: Breakfast
If you love to explore: Return to the City Centre and visit the Museum Gardens. Free to enter, this 10-acre park contains Roman ruins, the husk of a medieval abbey, and roughly 4,500 types of plants and trees. (The Yorkshire Museum sits nearby, too, housing five galleries filled with archaeological finds.)
If you enjoy history: Walk the Bar Walls. York’s famous walls have stood since Roman times, and two miles of masonry still ring the city. A trail runs beside and atop the fortifications, so lace up your sneakers and make a day of it!
Edinburgh3 nights
Day 9: Edinburgh via Alnwick Castle & Berwick-upon-Tweed
Included meal: Breakfast
Before crossing into Scotland for the final leg of your trip, take a scenic seaside drive to the market town of Alnwick. Its eponymous castle, a residence of the Duke of Northumberland, has been used as a filming location for everything from the first two “Harry Potter” movies to “Downton Abbey”—and today, you’ll get to set foot inside.
- Walk Alnwick Castle’s well-appointed staterooms—decorated with masterpieces by Van Eyck, Titian, and Turner—the grand library, and dining room. (The Duke and his family still take meals there on occasion.)
- Head outside and stroll the adjacent Alnwick Garden. Besides its manicured lawns and babbling fountains, it boasts a particularly unique attraction: the Poison Garden. The brainchild of the Duchess of Northumberland, it contains hemlock, opium poppies, belladonna, and other toxic plants.
After your visit, make a pit stop in Berwick-upon-Tweed—the northernmost town in England—before continuing to Edinburgh.
Please note: No photography is permitted inside Alnwick Castle. Additionally, it closes to the public from early November through early March. If traveling at that time, you’ll instead visit Durham Cathedral—an elegant structure that pioneered architectural techniques like ribbed stone vaults.
Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Edinburgh
Included meal: Breakfast
Nestled between the rivers Almond and Esk, Edinburgh emerges from a series of hills and rocky ridges, earning it the nickname of the Athens of the North. With a local guide in the lead, get to know the women behind Scotland’s capital and how their legacies are felt today.
- View the elegant neoclassical and Georgian architecture of the New Town. Its ornate sandstone and granite structures, surrounding oasis-like gardens and green spaces, became a model for European urban planning in the 18th century and beyond.
- Contrast the New Town’s grace with the Old Town’s Royal Mile, which runs between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace—the official residence of British monarchs in Scotland. Here, you’ll cross moody, narrow streets and alleys (known as “closes”) flanked by brooding buildings and timeworn cathedrals.
- Pass the towering Sir Walter Scott monument. Paying homage to the “Ivanhoe” and “Rob Roy” scribe, it’s one of the largest sculptural tributes to an author in the world.
- Visit the Scottish Storytelling Centre and meet with a female orator. This venue strives to preserve traditional Scottish storytelling through live performances; your host will regale you with tales of women from the nation’s past and present.
- Ascend Castle Rock and enter Edinburgh Castle. Standing on an extinct volcano at the top of the Royal Mile, it houses the Scottish crown jewels. Until March 2024, it was also home to the Stone of Scone—used since the 13th century to coronate the monarchs of England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom.
Use your free afternoon in the city to go back and wander the winding streets of Old Town. If you’re feeling adventurous, perhaps consider a spooky stroll through the tunnels that weave underneath the city. Of course, you can always tuck into a booth in a cozy cafe and linger over tea and shortbread.
If you’d like, fill your night with song and dance at a cèilidh (say it “KAY-lee”) by adding our optional excursion to your itinerary. Alternatively, break off from the group for a free evening on your own.
Please note: The order of today’s activities is subject to change.
Day 11: Free day in Edinburgh & bagpipe lesson
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Ever want to live your own “Outlander” story? Add today’s optional outing to your itinerary to visit Midhope Castle, Doune Castle, and other locations used to film the hit television series. If you’d prefer to explore on your own, head southeast of Edinburgh to quiet, atmospheric Craigmillar Castle. Wonderfully preserved and with jaw-dropping views of Edinburgh, it twice hosted Mary, Queen of Scots.
This evening, head to a local restaurant and meet a professional female bagpiper for a private group lesson.
- Learn about the history of the bagpipe, Scotland’s national instrument, and listen to the musician play a few songs.
- Pick up your own bagpipe, learn essential breathing techniques, and follow along as you try to play your first notes.
- Celebrate your trip during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine, and toast to bonds forged and memories made.
Flight Home
Day 12: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or head to the train station and set off for London. A few days drinking in the sights along the River Thames? Sounds like a great reason to extend a trip.
London extension
Beyond its traditional teas and towers, old London Town is a treat of a stay—and a living museum, too. Between statues of Churchill and Nelson, among the legacies of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, lie memorials to Agatha Christie, Edith Cavell, and other great English women. As you roam about on this extension, you’ll hear the stories of ladies that propelled their country to greater and greater heights (and leave with tales of your own).
London3 nights
Day 12: Train to London
Included meal: Breakfast
This morning, hop on your bus and head to Edinburgh’s Waverley station: While some of your groupmates fly back across the Atlantic, you’ll ride the rails south to London. After pulling into King’s Cross, transfer to your hotel and settle in for a relaxing free afternoon.
Please note: Porterage isn’t included on the train ride from Edinburgh to London. You should be comfortable lifting and carrying your bags over steps, onto platforms, and into storage.
Day 13: Women’s sightseeing tour of London
Included meal: Breakfast
London’s been settled for almost 2,000 years, and its history winds through Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and Viking rule. Today’s guided walking tour focuses on the city’s modern era, viewed through the lens of its female icons.
- Spot some of the city’s defining landmarks, including Big Ben, London’s unofficial calling card. (Did you know that nickname belongs to the Great Bell of the clock tower and not the tower itself?)
- See Westminster Abbey, one of London’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Since its consecration in 1065, it’s seen 16 royal weddings and the coronation of 40 monarchs—six of them queens who ruled in their own right.
- Stop at the Millicent Garrett Fawcett Statue. Added after a petition highlighting the lack of female representation among the statues in Parliament Square Garden, this sculpture honors one of England’s most influential suffragettes.
- Walk to Trafalgar Square, pausing at the end of Downing Street to view the Monument to the Women of World War II. Crafted from hollow bronze, it memorializes the 7 million women who contributed to the war effort and the hundreds of jobs they fulfilled.
- Continue to the Edith Cavell Memorial, dedicated to a British nurse who selflessly treated wounded soldiers during World War I, regardless of nationality. She also helped more than 200 Allied soldiers escape occupied Belgium; in 1915, she was arrested, tried, and executed by the Imperial German Army.
- End at the Agatha Christie Memorial. The Queen of Mystery wrote detective novels, plays, nonfiction stories, and more—and today, she stands alone as the best-selling fiction writer of all time.
After free time for lunch in the posh Covent Garden district, you’ll have two choices for your afternoon. If you’d like to tour the former residence of Queen Victoria and Princess Diana, and cap your day with a traditional tea service, add our optional outing to Kensington Palace. Otherwise, hang back and explore London on your own. Shoreditch, with its vibrant art and street food scene, is always a good move—as is asking your Tour Director for recommendations.
Day 14: Free day in London
Included meal: Breakfast
For your last free day in London, add the excursion to Stonehenge and Oxford to your itinerary. (It’s a truly monumental way to spend a few hours.)
If you’d rather explore on your own, use your free day to check out some of London’s many excellent museums. (Some of our favorites: the traditional exhibits of the British Museum in the Bloomsbury district, and the more interactive offerings of the Cutty Sark clipper ship in Greenwich, on the south bank of the River Thames.)
This evening, enjoy a farewell drink and celebrate your trip with your groupmates
Flight Home
Day 15: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Please keep in mind that trains may only be stopping at the stations for a few minutes; speed with loading and unloading may be imperative.

Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
- For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try. Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods in London for the ultimate in English tradition.
- On the tour extension, modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine.

- Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
- To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
- Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
- There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

- Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
