Imperial Cities by Train: Berlin, Prague & Vienna

10 days  |  12 days with Budapest extension  |  Loading prices

Group size
15–28 travelers

Flash back to the golden age of rail travel as you journey through the heart of Central Europe.

Berlin, Prague, and Vienna served as the nerve centers for some of Europe’s most powerful empires—and that legacy’s plainly evident today. This tour links this imperial trio, connecting Germany’s triumphal arches, the Czech Republic’s copper-clad spires, and Austria’s storied coffeehouses by rail. You’ll perfectly pair the city and the countryside (with one of Central Europe’s most beautiful train routes to thank); to add another few centuries of history to your itinerary, sign up for the extension to Budapest and drink up its unique take on art nouveau architecture.

Your tour package includes

  • 8 nights in handpicked hotels
  • 8 breakfasts, and 3 dinners with beer or wine
  • 1 tasting, a mouthwatering introduction to a proper Viennese apple strudel
  • 3 sightseeing tours, introducing you to the grandeur of three imperial capitals
  • 1 expert Tour Director, your encyclopedia for all things Central Europe
  • 3 local guides, ready to bring each stop to life
  • 2 scenic train rides (3 if you book the extension)
  • Private deluxe motor coaches for smooth sightseeing within cities
  • Entrances to museums, landmarks, and more—so you can skip the lines

Included highlights

  • Smiling at the rivers, plains, and cities whipping past your window as you ride the rails across the continent
  • Winding your way up the Reichstag Dome, Berlin stretching into the distance
  • Feeling the emotional weight of Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial—2,711 concrete stelae dedicated to the murdered Jews of Europe
  • Gazing up at the Gothic spires of Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle complex in the world
  • Tracing the shelves lining the Baroque halls of the Austrian National Library
  • Marveling at the gilded grandeur of the Hungarian State Opera House (if you add the Budapest extension)

Berlin

Day 2: Arrival in Berlin

Included meal: Welcome dinner

Welcome to Germany! After touching down, transfer to your hotel to get settled in. Then, enjoy a welcome dinner in good company as you get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers. Raise your glass of beer or wine and get excited for the days to come.

Budapest extension

A little farther down the Danube, the Hungarian capital, Budapest, straddles the famous river’s banks. Its hearty cuisine and profound history have enraptured generations of travelers—and after riding the rails to the city and exploring it on this tour’s extension, you’ll be able to count yourself as part of that lucky group.

Budapest

Day 10: Train to Budapest & sightseeing tour

Included meal: Breakfast

Start your day by walking or driving to the Wien Hauptbahnhof, where you’ll board a train to Budapest. Divided by the Danube River, the once-separate towns of Buda and Pest merged in 1873 to form one of Eastern Europe’s most lively cities—and after a smooth ride across the fertile plains of the Pannonian Basin, you’ll jump right into the Hungarian capital’s culture with a local guide.

  • Trace this nation’s stormy past at Heroes’ Square, a massive plaza adorned with statues of national leaders and the legendary seven chieftains of the Magyars.
  • Tour the lavish interior of the Hungarian State Opera House. Rich golds and crimsons carry the eye to statues symbolizing operatic voices and the four cardinal virtues, all framed by delicately painted murals.
  • Cross the Danube and ascend Castle Hill via funicular. Topped by the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle, this outcrop was the historic home of Hungarian kings for more than 800 years.

Day 11: Free day in Budapest

Included meal: Breakfast

Your first glimpse of Budapest’s art nouveau heritage came courtesy of Keleti Station. Add today’s optional walking tour to your itinerary, and you’ll follow a local expert across town in search of even more architectural highlights. (And yes, you’ll stop at one of the city’s beloved cafes for a treat as you go.)

If you stay behind, try to visit the Hungarian Parliament Building on your own. With its symmetrical structure, several spires, and finely detailed facade, the Orszaghaz—as it’s called in the Magyar language—is the country’s most famous landmark and biggest building.

Either way, you’ll join your groupmates for a farewell drink in the evening and end your travels on a high note.

Flight Home
