From historic fortresses to bioluminescent bays, savor the best of Puerto Rico—no passport required.

Taino roots, Spanish heritage, and Caribbean charisma combine to make Puerto Rico a destination unlike any other in the United States. Add in the draw of La Parguera’s luminous bay and El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the National Forest System, and you further solidify that fact. Experience the colonial confines of San Juan, the architectural treasures of Ponce, and the seaside serenity of the Rio Grande coast, delighting in farm-to-table cuisine and dipping your toes in the welcoming waters of both the Atlantic and the Caribbean. And for a greater taste of island life (and even more time to enjoy the amenities of your coastal resort), extend your stay in Rio Grande to blend the bliss of the beach with the sweetness of a visit to a cacao plantation.

Itinerary

San Juan

Day 1: Arrival in San Juan

Welcome to Puerto Rico! After touching down in San Juan, the island’s largest city and capital, transfer to your hotel and get settled. You’ll meet the rest of your group—and get to know the UNESCO-recognized landmarks of Old San Juan—tomorrow.

Day 2: Sightseeing tour of San Juan

Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner

An island within an island, Old San Juan marks the oldest European settlement in Puerto Rico and boasts old-world monuments to match. Follow your Tour Director this morning for a walking tour of its blue-cobbled streets and flash back to San Juan’s past as a vital Spanish port.

  • Dig into Puerto Rican history at Plaza Colon—a public square marking where San Juan’s eastern walls once stood—before entering San Cristobal Castle. The largest Spanish fortification in the New World, it took close to 150 years to build and protected the city against English, Dutch, and American assaults over the centuries.
  • Stroll past the buildings and boutiques lining Calle de la Fortaleza, and don’t forget to look up: Depending on the time of year, you might spot butterflies, lights, or umbrellas strung up above the street.
  • Stop outside the 16th-century La Fortaleza. Once a fortress, it was remodeled in the Neoclassical style in the 1840s and still functions as the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico.
  • Enter the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a hulking hilltop stronghold that has guarded the entrance to San Juan Bay for more than 400 years, and hear the tales of its harrowing battles.

Interested in adding a splash of color (and a shot or two of rum) to your legend-loaded day? Tack our optional excursion onto your itinerary to visit the mural-bedecked neighborhood of Santurce before ending the afternoon at a local distillery. Otherwise, explore San Juan at your leisure before reuniting with your groupmates for a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Rio Grande Coast extension

The main tour ended a stone’s throw from some of the best beaches in the Caribbean—and on this extension, you’ll have even more time to enjoy them. In between restful stretches at a seafront resort on the Rio Grande coast, you’ll sample indulgent chocolates on an El Yunque cacao farm and fill your days with whatever activities you see fit. (And yes, we think catching rays on golden sands counts!)

Rio Grande Coast

Day 7: Cacao farm tour

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting

This morning, head back into the tropical wilds of El Yunque—but instead of the rainforest itself, you’ll marvel at another of Puerto Rico’s natural treasures. Chocolate has a long, rich history on the island, and after meeting with a local guide, you’ll bite into part of it during a tour of a cacao farm.

  • Walk the property, learning how farmers cultivate cacao using sustainable methods and what it takes to transform the tree’s tangy fruit into different kinds of chocolate.
  • Sample a selection of single-estate chocolates: bars ranging from 55% to 75% cocoa, as well as white chocolate infused with cacao nibs and Puerto Rican coffee.

Following your tour, return to your hotel on the Rio Grande coast and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 8: Free day on the Rio Grande coast

Included meal: Breakfast

What better way to wind down your tour than with a full day by the beach? Whether you lay out on the sand, go for a dip in the Atlantic, take advantage of your hotel’s amenities, or explore nearby towns to seek out your Tour Director’s recommendations, today’s all about relaxation.

However you spend your time, you’ll come together with your groupmates this evening for a farewell drink. Clink glasses, toast to your trip, then return to your room and prepare for tomorrow’s journey home.

Flight Home

Day 9: Departure

Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)

Transfer to the San Juan airport for your flight home.
