Itinerary

Bogotá3 nights
Day 1: Arrival in Bogotá
Welcome to Colombia! After arriving in Bogotá, make the short transfer to your hotel with your groupmates. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, catch up on sleep, and look forward to the rest of your journey. To acclimate to the altitude—Bogotá is perched at 8,600 feet above sea level—you’ll want to stay hydrated and take it easy as you adjust.
Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Bogotá
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch, Beer tasting
Today, get to know Colombia’s Andean metropolis (and largest city) with a local guide on a sightseeing tour. Honking horns, chattering crowds, and blaring music become your background symphony as you navigate the city’s thoroughfares.
- Ascend to the towering Mount Monserrate by way of cable car—with a fast pass to skip the crowds—where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. The top (way up there at 10,341 feet) is home to a popular pilgrimage site—the Sanctuary of Monserrate.
- Greet the city (and your expert local guide) in Plaza Bolívar, Bogotá’s main square named after Latin America’s hero, Simon Bolívar. It’s a focal point for cultural events and gatherings and is surrounded by significant landmarks like the National Capitol of Colombia and the Primary Cathedral of Bogotá.
- Set off on a short walking tour through the quaint colonial architecture of barrio La Candelaria, a small, historic neighborhood teeming with street art, delicious foods, and culture. Here, the streets are a stage for artisans, performers, and graffiti muralists.
- Get to know your group during a welcome lunch at a local restaurant, served with your choice of beer or wine.
This afternoon, visit Casa de la Paz (The House of Peace) a safe space staffed by former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—known locally as FARC. On the heels of the 2016 peace process in Colombia, the center offers a glimpse into the country’s difficult past and work towards reconciliation.
- Learn how the mostly female-led house serves as a source of strength and community for Colombians through a variety of projects to reintegrate ex-guerrilla combatants into society.
- Hear from former FARC combatants about the founding of the on-site La Trocha brewery and sample a few of its specialty frothy ales.
Day 3: Free day in Bogotá
Included meal: Breakfast
One advantage to being way up in the Andes? The tropical, moss-covered, and dense cloud forests teeming with wildlife. Add an excursion to Chicaque Natural Park to your itinerary for a leisurely hike (we hear you might spot the adorable and slow-moving sloth on your trek) or heart-pumping 340-meter zipline though the forest canopy.
If you’re setting off on your own in Bogotá today, ask your Tour Director for a recommendation. We love the trendy Usaquén neighborhood for its cozy cafes, boutiques, and architecture. For your fill of Colombian cuisine, head to a local market like Mercado de las Pulgas for fresh fruit or traditional arepas or empanadas—conveniently handheld eats so you can snack on the go.
Medellín3 nights
Day 4: Flight to Medellín & sightseeing tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Fly to Medellín this morning, then get to know Colombia’s second-largest city on a sightseeing tour. This “City of Eternal Spring” is named after its mild, spring-like year-round weather—high elevation does have its perks. Rising from the ashes of its association with drug cartels, the city has undergone a remarkable and hard-fought transformation thanks to the locals’ Paisa culture—celebrated for its warmth, friendliness, and entrepreneurial spirit.
- Set out by bus and pass the former quarters of Pablo Escobar’s house as you learn about Colombia’s struggle against the drug trade and honor the victims ensnared in its wake.
- Depart at Botero Plaza, where your local guide will lead you on a walk through the park past 23 sculptures by celebrated Colombian artist, Fernando Botero. Botero’s style is characterized by exaggerated proportions and voluptuous figures that explore the themes of power, wealth, corruption, and the human condition.
- Travel by cable car to Comuna 13. Once one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, it has transformed into a dynamic and resilient community thanks to the city’s investment into infrastructure and innovative public transportation. Throughout, steep hillsides are now connected to the city center via cable car and giant escalators.
Gather with your group this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: Travelers should be prepared for an early morning.
Day 5: Coffee farm visit & tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting
Another (literal) perk to high-altitude and ample rainfall? Ideal growing conditions for Colombia’s source of natural pride and most beloved export—coffee. Make your way from your hotel to a local farm. Known as fincas, farms in Colombia produce coffee that is subject to strict quality control measures that encourage sustainable farming practices.
- Tour a family-owned estate to learn how coffee cherries are harvested, pulped, washed, and dried and—after a multi-step process of cleaning and roasting—eventually become the flavorful drink we know and love.
- Learn how the estate protects and preserves the biodiversity of the area, and how it employs traditional methods to cultivate its crop, typically by the delicate hands of skilled laborers.
- Indulge in a tasting of some of the farm’s coffees, then sit down for an included lunch overlooking the pastoral grounds.
Use the energy boost from your coffee tasting and join the optional dancing lesson and dinner this evening. You’ll learn the fancy footwork, fluid movements, and distinct style of Colombian salsa.
For an evening out on the town, take in the nightlife at a rooftop bar, browse the stalls and fill up on street food at a night market. Be sure to look for a restaurant serving bandeja paisa—a hearty meal that heaps beans, rice, ground meat, crispy pork belly, avocado, plantain, fried egg, arepas, and a drizzle of a tomato and onion sauce known as hogao onto one heavenly plate.
Day 6: Free day in Medellín
Included meal: Breakfast
Change your scenery and choose to join us in Guatapé for a day at the foot of the massive granite rock formation known as El Peñol. Feeling up for a challenge? Hike the 700 steps to the top for a take-your-breath-away view or just head straight to Guatapé for a guided sightseeing and additional free time to explore the village on your own.
To explore nature in Medellín, ask your Tour Director for suggestions or take the Metrocable line to Parque Arvi, an expansive natural park with hiking trails, picnic areas, and prime birdwatching.
Cartegena2 nights
Day 7: Flight to Cartagena & sightseeing tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Fly to Cartagena today, located on Colombia’s breeze-blessed Caribbean coast. Upon arrival, set off on a walking tour to explore Cartagena’s historic, UNESCO-recognized Old Town with a local guide to help you navigate the bougainvillea-lined cobbled streets.
- Stroll through Plaza de Bolívar as you learn about the park’s connection to the fight for Colombian independence. Locals and tourists alike flock to the public square at the heart of this walled city. You’ll also share this space with religious processions, live performances, and street vendors.
- Visit San Felipe de Barajas Castle, a grand fortress built by the Spanish colonial authorities in 1536, making it one of the oldest and most significant fortresses in the Americas. When you take full stock of its massive stone walls, battlements, and artillery installations, you’ll understand how it successfully repelled attacks by English, French, and Dutch forces throughout its history.
- End your tour with a delicious tasting of a seasonal Colombian specialty picked just for you.
Please note: Travelers should be prepared for an early morning.
Day 8: Free day in Cartagena
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
You’ve walked, hiked, maybe even zip-lined across a cloud forest. It’s now time to relax. Add the Rosario Islands to your itinerary and snorkel, swim, or just sit back and wiggle your toes on a white-sand beach.
If you’re staying behind in Cartagena, we recommend walking the centuries-old city walls for a view of the Caribbean Sea and modern skyline or taking a dip at Playa Blanca or Playa De Bocagrande.
Toast your trip with your fellow travelers during tonight's farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 9: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your time in Cartagena to experience two essential parts of Caribbean culture: its thriving indigenous roots and its commitment to ecological conservation.
Cartagena extension
We know you’ll be feeling the “take me back” blues when you depart Cartagena, so why not stay a little longer? Extend your trip with a culturally immersive journey through Colombia’s colonial past and a chance to take part in a conservation project to restore the island mangroves, which are essential to protecting the fragile mainland from erosion.
Cartagena2 nights
Day 9: Sightseeing tour of San Basilio de Palenque & drum lesson
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
The unique and historic town of San Basilio de Palenque is a cultural hub of Colombia and the first free town founded by founded by former enslaved people who escaped and secretly lived in the surrounding mountains. Make your way outside of bustling Cartagena to the UNESCO-designated Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity to learn about Afro-Colombian culture and this symbol of resistance against Spanish colonization.
- Set off on a walking tour with your local guide who’ll take you on a deep dive into Colombia’s slave trade during colonial times, the slave revolt, and how the city’s inhabitants (known as Maroons) defended their hard-fought freedom through strategic alliances with indigenous groups. Keep your ears open for Palenquero, a unique Creole blend of Africa, Spanish, and indigenous languages.
- Enter the House of Traditional Medicine where you’ll hear about the ancestral, homeopathic medicinal knowledge handed down from generation to generation.
- Pass by the home of Antonio “Kid Pambelé” Cervantes, Colombia’s first world champion boxer and two-time world junior welterweight champion who hails from San Basilio de Palenque.
- Head to the town’s cultural center where you’ll be treated to a musical performance in the Palenque language.
- Learn all about the local champeta music from the locals as you try your hand (literally) at recreating the upbeat tunes during a drum lesson.
After an included lunch in San Basilio de Palenque—authentic fare prepared by locals—return to enjoy free time for the rest of the day. A dinner of line-caught seafood in a waterfront restaurant is always a good idea and you’ll find many options back in Cartagena.
Day 10: Free day in Cartagena
Included meal: Breakfast
Your final day in Cartagena is also your chance to make a lasting impact on the local community. Join us for an excursion to the fishing village of La Boquilla aboard a traditional wooden canoe and take part in a reforestation project that helps restore the local mangrove forests.
