Itinerary

San José

Day 1: Arrival in San José

Welcome to Costa Rica! After touching down in San José, make the short transfer to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the day, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Day 2: Cartago & Irazú Volcano National Park

Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch

Today, journey to the 16th-century city of Cartago—the first colonial settlement established on Costa Rican soil. Upon arrival, join your Tour Director for some guided sightseeing.

  • Visit the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, a uniquely designed Roman Catholic cathedral that combines both colonial and Byzantine elements. Built in 1639, it predates the founding of Costa Rica by almost 200 years.
  • Explore the Santiago Apostol Parish Ruins—a half-completed, 150-year-old church that now anchors a public park—and end with a walk through the bustling Central Market.
  • Get to know your fellow travelers during a welcome lunch this afternoon at a local restaurant.
  • Make your way through the Central Valley, Costa Rica’s stunning heartland, to Irazu Volcano National Park. Then, set off for a leisurely trail walk around its namesake attraction. Called “El Coloso,” or “The Colossus,” by locals, Irazu towers over 11,000 feet above sea level, making it the tallest active volcano in the country.
  • Stop at viewing platforms to soak in the beauty of the volcano’s massive main crater and the brilliant green lagoon at its center.

What better way to get to know authentic Costa Rica than through its traditional food and dance? Kick up your heels with an optional excursion that highlights the local folklore. Or, if you’d prefer, use your free time this evening to explore some of San José’s modern and colonial architecture.

Cartagena extension

Whether you eye the contours of its skyline, the time-tested walls encircling its Old Town, or the crystalline sands of its beaches, Cartagena’s bound to delight. But beyond its obvious attractions, you could call this historic outpost the cradle of modern Colombia, and on this extension, you’ll get to discover all the different sides of La Heroica.

Cartagena

Day 12: Flight to Cartagena & dance class

Included meal: Breakfast

This morning, head to Panama City’s airport and board a flight bound for Cartagena, Colombia. After landing, slip on your dancing shoes—you and your group will meet a local instructor to learn how to dance salsa and cumbia.

  • Follow along as your teacher shows you signature moves from each genre, then pair up and try them yourself.
  • Uncover the origins of cumbia. Uniquely Colombian, this syncopated style of music is a close cousin of salsa and owes its heritage to the influence of Indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans.

Dancing works up an appetite, and this evening’s excursion—a guided cooking class—is the perfect complement. Add it to your itinerary to prepare (and feast on) typical Colombian dishes, or use your free night to grab dinner on your own. For a tasty, portable snack, grab a pandebono: a chewy, cheesy bun similar to the Brazilian pao de queijo.

Day 13: Sightseeing tour of Cartagena

Included meal: Breakfast

Located on Colombia’s breeze-blessed Caribbean coast, Cartagena combines bougainvillea-lined streets and azure beaches with millennia-spanning history. Upon arrival, set off on a walking tour of its UNESCO-recognized Old Town with a local guide.

  • Stroll through Plaza de Bolivar, the heart of Cartagena’s walled Old Town, and learn about the park’s connection to the fight for Colombian independence.
  • Tour the Inquisition Palace. Some 800 people—primarily Jews and other non-Catholics—were tortured and executed there by the Spanish during the colonial era; nowadays, the building serves as a museum displaying artifacts from the time.
  • Visit San Felipe de Barajas Castle. Designed by the Spanish and built by enslaved Africans, this hulking fortress successfully repelled attacks by the English, French, and Dutch, and still stands as one of the oldest fortresses in the Americas.

Need a little break from the city? Take a closer look at Cartagena’s mangroves—and a particularly percussive part of the local culture—by adding our outing to La Boquilla to your itinerary. Alternatively, explore the art-adorned alleys of the Getsemani neighborhood on your own before retreating to a bar for a shot of aguardiente, Colombia’s anise-flavored national drink.

Day 14: Free day in Cartagena

Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner

If the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea have beckoned you from the moment you arrived in Cartagena, today’s your chance to dive in. For a little more structure, opt into our day trip to Isla Baru and let the Colombian sun melt any tension away.

This evening, you’ll reunite with your group at a local restaurant and celebrate your trip over a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Flight Home
