Lyon2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Lyon
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to France! After touching down, spend a restful afternoon in the comfort of your hotel. Tonight, you’ll meet your Tour Director and groupmates for a welcome dinner at a bouchon—a cozy restaurant that specializes in traditional Lyonnais food. Enjoy your first taste of proper French cuisine, served with beer or wine, before heading to bed.
Day 3: Food tour of Lyon & cooking class
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Lyon serves as France’s culinary capital—and, depending on which critic you ask, the world’s. After breakfast, link up with a local guide and set out for a taste of the city.
- Begin atop Fourviere Hill, outside the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere. You may have already seen it while transferring into town yesterday, but this cathedral—built on the site of an old Roman forum—staggers up close.
- Drive over Saint-Exupéry Hill—named for Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the Lyon-born author of the world-famous novella The Little Prince—stopping at landmarks like the riverside Quais de Saone en route.
- Walk through Vieux Lyon, the city’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, passing the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist of Lyon before ducking into the traboules. These secret covered passageways once helped workers and merchants shuttle between streets; word has it that it takes a true Lyonnais to locate them.
- End with a sampling of the city’s cuisine at the Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. On the menu at this iconic covered market: local cured sausage, Saint-Marcellin cheese, pink praline tarts, and coussins de Lyon (chocolate ganache wrapped in marzipan).
Sightseeing complete, relax for a spell before heading with your group to a nearby culinary school. There, follow a trained chef through a hands-on cooking class; work through the recipes of different Lyonnais specialties, then cap your day by digging into your creations.
Burgundy region2 nights
Day 4: Burgundy region via Chateau Philippe le Hardi
Included meals: Breakfast, Wine tasting, Light Lunch
Head north from Lyon this morning, trading the cobbles of the city for the sweeping country of the Burgundy wine region. Revered around the world for its pinot noirs and chardonnays, this area boasts more appellations d’origine controlee, or controlled designations of origin, than any other in France—and during a stop in Santenay, you’ll learn why.
- Meet a local guide at the Chateau Philippe le Hardi—the 14th-century residence of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy—and embark on a tour of its medieval cellars.
- Discover how the region’s terroir sets its wines apart from others produced in the Cote d’Or before joining the chateau’s resident sommelier for a guided tasting.
Finally, enjoy a light lunch at a nearby restaurant in Santenay before hitting the road once more. After finishing your journey, check into your hotel in Beaune and take it easy for the rest of the evening.
Day 5: Free day in the Burgundy region
Included meal: Breakfast
How does a town of roughly 20,000 become known as Burgundy’s wine capital? You’ll find the answers on today’s optional outing. Add it and you’ll visit the Hospices de Beaune before descending into the cellars of Domaine Chanson to taste some of its standout vintages. If you’d rather explore on your own, consider renting a bike and pedaling through the surrounding vineyards. The area’s climats, or growing parcels, were recognized by UNESCO and produce wildly different—but excellent—wines.
Champagne region2 nights
Day 6: Champagne region via Troyes
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Continue north through the French heartland today en route to the world-renowned Champagne region. You’ll end your day in Reims—but first, pull into the ancient city of Troyes and join your Tour Director on a walk through its Old Town.
- Weave between half-timbered houses that date to the 16th century, learning how Troyes once served as the region’s political and commercial hub.
- Squeeze through the medieval Ruelle des Chats (and keep an eye out for the carving that lends this alley its name).
- Spot the famous stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, then join your group for an included lunch that flaunts the flavors of the Champagne-Ardenne.
Day 7: Sightseeing tour of Reims & Veuve Clicquot Champagne cellar tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Wine tasting
The Roman Empire. The French monarchy. Reims has long held a central role in European affairs, and today, you’ll join a local guide for a tour of the Coronation City.
- Enter the Cathedral of Our Lady of Reims, the same church where Joan of Arc saw Charles VII crowned King of France.
- Walk the halls of the Basilica of Saint-Remi. Filled with centuries of religious and royal history, this medieval abbey holds relics of the city’s patron saint.
- Sample biscuits roses de Reims. Traditionally dunked in Champagne, these delicate pink treats are Reims’ confectionery calling card.
Then, continue your exploration of the Champagne region at one of its most iconic estates—Veuve Clicquot.
- Tour the house’s historic, UNESCO-listed cellars to learn how its Champagne is made, from the harvesting of pinot noir grapes to the slow aging of every bottle.
- Savor a tasting of four cuvees and work to identify the different flavor notes called out by your expert sommelier.
Paris2 nights
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Chateau de Chantilly & transfer to Paris
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
On your way to Paris, pause in the town of Chantilly. There, tour the Chateau de Chantilly, a fairytale estate surrounded by manicured gardens and tranquil lakes. After, sit down for an included lunch featuring Chantilly’s most famous culinary creation—its airy, sweet vanilla whipped cream. First crafted in the chateau’s kitchens in the 17th century, this delicacy became a symbol of French indulgence; paired with seasonal fruits or delicate pastries, it’s a taste of history as much as a treat for the senses.
For your first evening in Paris, you have a choice: Spend it at your leisure, or join us on our optional outing. Add the latter to your itinerary to dine in one of the city’s acclaimed cafes before cruising the Seine, both banks glowing beneath storied streetlamps.
Day 9: Walking tour of Ile de la Cite & baking class
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
The cradle of modern Paris, the Ile de la Cite has been settled for more than 2,000 years. This 56-acre island, rising out of the Seine, houses some of France’s most beloved landmarks—and with a local guide in the lead, you’ll stroll its cobbled lanes and graceful bridges to unravel its royal and revolutionary history.
- Marvel at the blue-and-gold interior of the 13th-century Sainte-Chapelle, the former chapel of the Kings of France. Louis IX personally commissioned it to house his collection of Passion relics; some, including the Crown of Thorns, are now held at Notre-Dame.
- Conclude at the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, where your guide shares the history and architectural highlights of this breathtaking masterpiece from the outside—including the remarkable restoration work carried out following the 2019 fire. Then, join the queue and head inside on your own to witness the stunning results up close.
This afternoon, spend some time learning the delicate, elegant art of crafting French patisseries during a baking class. As you practice your new skills, you’ll sample a treat or two—and discover the tricks behind how they’re made so you can recreate them at home.
Finally, celebrate your trip with your groupmates during a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 10: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or extend your stay in Paris by a few days to take a bite out of its vibrant cafe culture. (Let's be honest: No trip to France is complete without a fresh baguette.)
Paris extension
More time in Paris? Oui, s’il-vous-plait! This excursion tacks an extra two nights onto your stay in the French capital—and fills your days with its famous cafes. Snack your way through the Palais-Royal and down Rue Montorgueil before setting out into the city; it’s your call whether you seek new flavors or reprise old favorites.
Paris2 nights
Day 10: Sightseeing tour of the Palais-Royal & Rue Montorgueil
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
When Parisians want to eat, they head to the Palais-Royal—a former royal palace that houses government offices, a lush garden, and a clutch of restaurants. Kick your morning off by heading to the area, then join a local guide for a tour focused on its cafe culture.
- Explore the Palais-Royal’s column-lined courtyard, sculpture-dotted garden, and shop-filled galleries. (Maybe pop into a cafe for an espresso, too.)
- Make your way to Rue Montorgueil, a market street made famous in a painting by Claude Monet. Locals come here to shop and socialize; you’ll mingle with them while hopping from eatery to eatery.
- Snack on croissants, baguettes, cheeses, and chocolates as you walk down the street, and understand why Rue Montorgueil draws gourmands the world over.
Afterward, you’re free to roam Paris’ streets for the rest of the day. Consider sticking around the Palais-Royal and treating yourself to any bites that catch your eye—or, to cap your evening with glitz and glam, add our optional outing to Montmartre to your itinerary. You’ll stroll through this bohemian neighborhood before settling in for a cabaret show and dinner.
Day 11: Free day in Paris
Included meal: Breakfast
As your tour draws to a close, forge your own path during your free day in Paris. Dive into centuries of fine art at the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, or the Musee de l’Orangerie; satisfy a craving for a new book at one of the bouquinistes, or book stalls, that line the Seine; or take a walk down the Champs-Elysees. The choice is yours!
This evening, join your groupmates for a farewell drink before turning in.
