Canada & New England: Quebec, Vermont & Boston

Trace a path from Quebec’s cobblestoned quarters to the salt-kissed shores of New England.

Few regions pack as much character into as little distance as the stretch of land between Quebec City and the New England coast. Here, French and English traditions rub shoulders in Montreal’s bistro-lined streets, cider flows from family-owned orchards in Vermont, and the summit of Mount Washington offers views that make the ascent—by the world’s first mountain-climbing railway, no less—entirely worth it. You’ll even spend two nights at the Austrian-inspired von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, owned and operated by the family that inspired “The Sound of Music.” From the thundering mist of Montmorency Falls to the briny snap of a freshly shucked Maine oyster (take the extension to Portland—you won’t regret it), you’re in for a treat without crossing an ocean. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the food, or simply the pleasure of waking up somewhere new every few days, this is the Northeast done right.

Itinerary

Quebec City, Quebec

Day 1: Arrival in Quebec City

Welcome to Canada! After arriving in Quebec City, make the short transfer with your groupmates to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use your free time to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat at your hotel, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Quebec City

Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner

Your morning kicks off with a guided panoramic bus tour through Quebec City—the heart of French Canada—where a local guide brings the layers of this storied city to life through its monuments.

  • Wind past the lively Grande Allee and the Place d’Armes—each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich French heritage that dates to the early 1600s.
  • Stop at the iconic Chateau Frontenac, one of the most photographed hotels in the world. Resembling a French Loire Valley chateau, the hotel is built on an imposing promontory. You’ll get to stroll along Dufferin Terrace, which wraps around the hotel, for sweeping views of the St. Lawrence River below.
  • Drive through the Plains of Abraham—a national battlefield central to the conflict between the British and French for control of Canada—taking in views of the Citadel, Parliament Hill, and Notre-Dame Cathedral.
  • Pass through the picturesque Place de Paris and Place Royale before wrapping up your tour with free time for lunch in Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cobblestone streets and 18th-century fortifications.

With the afternoon stretching out ahead of you, consider ducking into the Musee de la Civilisation to dig deeper into Quebec’s fascinating cultural story, or simply lose yourself in the narrow, shop-lined streets of the Petit Champlain district—one of North America’s oldest commercial quarters and a rewarding place to browse for locally made crafts and souvenirs.

Continue getting to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers during tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Portland extension

Trade Boston’s red-brick-lined streets for the sea-sprayed calm of Portland, Maine. With a stop in the picturesque fishing village of Kennebunkport along the way, this two-day extension eases you into one of New England’s most celebrated food destinations, one freshly shucked oyster and lobster roll at a time. Trust us: Two more days is exactly what this trip needs.

Portland, Maine

Day 11: Portland via Kennebunkport

Included meal: Breakfast

Trace one of the most scenic stretches of the New England coast on your way to Kennebunkport, the scene-stealing fishing town where sea captains’ mansions and presidential summer homes dot the rocky shoreline. Board a private trolley for a guided tour that rolls through 300 years of local history, from Native American heritage to the town’s shipbuilding heyday.

  • Pass President George H.W. Bush’s estate at Walker’s Point, perched on a dramatic peninsula where the Bush family has summered for generations.
  • View Saint Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery, a peaceful retreat set amid manicured gardens and wooded trails overlooking the Kennebunk River.
  • Cruise along the coastline to admire Kennebunkport’s beloved beaches, where sandy crescents meet the Atlantic’s crashing waves.
  • Stop to see Spouting Rock and Blowing Cave, natural formations where the ocean surges through rocky crevices, sending spray skyward with each powerful wave.
  • Enjoy free time for lunch and shopping in Dock Square, home to cute boutiques, galleries, and seafood shacks that line the harborside streets.

Head north to Portland, Maine’s largest city and one of New England’s most celebrated food and arts destinations. Make a stop at Fort Williams Park to drink in sweeping views of Portland Head Light—Maine’s oldest lighthouse, standing sentinel over the glittering waters of Portland Harbor and Casco Bay. Explore the on-site museum and gift shop, and linger as long as the views demand.

Then, head into the city and let the evening unfold at your own pace. Dive headfirst into Portland’s trend-setting restaurant scene: Fresh-off-the-boat lobster, craft breweries, and James Beard-recognized kitchens all vie for your attention along the cobblestoned streets of the Old Port district.

Day 12: Sightseeing tour of Portland, lobster roll & oyster shucking class

Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner

Soak up your final day in New England on a guided sightseeing tour that captures the best of Portland’s rugged coastal character and historic charm.

  • Wind through the streets of Portland’s historic core, passing the bustling wharves of Commercial Street, the grand civic buildings lining Congress Street, and Fort Allen Park before spotting the Portland Observatory—the last maritime signal tower in the country—crowning Munjoy Hill.
  • Wrap up the guided portion of the day with free time for lunch among the chowder houses, oyster bars, and artisan eateries that fill the district’s streets.

The afternoon is yours to spend as you please, whether that means browsing the galleries and boutiques of the Arts District, wandering the Eastern Promenade trail for sweeping views of Casco Bay, or simply settling into a harborside spot with a locally brewed pint in hand.

Then, gather with your fellow travelers one last time for a farewell dinner experience that couldn’t be more Maine if it tried. You’ll tuck into two New England classics on one unforgettable sendoff.

  • Roll up your sleeves for a hands-on oyster shucking class, learning to pry shells open like a seasoned pro before slurping down six briny, regional oysters that you shucked yourself.
  • Learn the art of crafting a proper Maine-style lobster roll: Pile your ingredients high, take that first glorious bite, and wash it all down with a glass of Prosecco or a cold beer.
  • Raise a final glass to the road traveled and to your groupmates.
