Canada & New England: Quebec, Vermont & Boston
11 days | 13 days with Portland extension |
- Group size
- 15–38 travelers
- Activity level
Trace a path from Quebec’s cobblestoned quarters to the salt-kissed shores of New England.
Few regions pack as much character into as little distance as the stretch of land between Quebec City and the New England coast. Here, French and English traditions rub shoulders in Montreal’s bistro-lined streets, cider flows from family-owned orchards in Vermont, and the summit of Mount Washington offers views that make the ascent—by the world’s first mountain-climbing railway, no less—entirely worth it. You’ll even spend two nights at the Austrian-inspired von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, owned and operated by the family that inspired “The Sound of Music.” From the thundering mist of Montmorency Falls to the briny snap of a freshly shucked Maine oyster (take the extension to Portland—you won’t regret it), you’re in for a treat without crossing an ocean. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the food, or simply the pleasure of waking up somewhere new every few days, this is the Northeast done right.

Itinerary

Quebec City, Quebec2 nights
Day 1: Arrival in Quebec City
Welcome to Canada! After arriving in Quebec City, make the short transfer with your groupmates to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the evening, so use your free time to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat at your hotel, and look forward to the rest of your journey.
Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Quebec City
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
Your morning kicks off with a guided panoramic bus tour through Quebec City—the heart of French Canada—where a local guide brings the layers of this storied city to life through its monuments.
- Wind past the lively Grande Allee and the Place d’Armes—each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich French heritage that dates to the early 1600s.
- Stop at the iconic Chateau Frontenac, one of the most photographed hotels in the world. Resembling a French Loire Valley chateau, the hotel is built on an imposing promontory. You’ll get to stroll along Dufferin Terrace, which wraps around the hotel, for sweeping views of the St. Lawrence River below.
- Drive through the Plains of Abraham—a national battlefield central to the conflict between the British and French for control of Canada—taking in views of the Citadel, Parliament Hill, and Notre-Dame Cathedral.
- Pass through the picturesque Place de Paris and Place Royale before wrapping up your tour with free time for lunch in Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cobblestone streets and 18th-century fortifications.
With the afternoon stretching out ahead of you, consider ducking into the Musee de la Civilisation to dig deeper into Quebec’s fascinating cultural story, or simply lose yourself in the narrow, shop-lined streets of the Petit Champlain district—one of North America’s oldest commercial quarters and a rewarding place to browse for locally made crafts and souvenirs.
Continue getting to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers during tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sainte-Anne-de Beaupre & Montmorency Falls Park

Just a short drive from Quebec City, the Beaupre Coast is a stretch of shoreline that has drawn pilgrims, artists, and nature lovers for centuries. Today, you’ll discover what makes this corner of Quebec so captivating. In the summer, expect a thicket of forest greens unfurling across the landscape.
- Pull over for a photo stop at Montmorency Falls Park, where a thundering cascade—taller than Niagara Falls—plunges into the gorge below. Breathe in the mist and soak up the views of the surrounding parkland before continuing along the coast.
- Step inside the Albert Gilles Copper Art Museum for a guided tour and dive into the centuries-old craft of coppersmithing. Watch a live demonstration of repousse metalwork—a technique that transforms flat sheets of copper into richly textured works of art—then browse the showroom for a piece to bring home.
- Conclude the day at the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, a soaring testament to Quebec’s patron saint that has anchored this stretch of coastline as an important Christian pilgrimage site since the 1600s. Step inside to view the basilica’s vault, entirely covered in mosaics and hundreds of stained glass windows.
Montreal, Quebec2 nights
Day 4: Transfer to Montreal
Included meal: Breakfast
Bid farewell to Quebec City and make your way southwest to the island of Montreal, Canada’s bilingual metropolis, where French pride meets cosmopolitan flair. As you roll through southern Quebec, you’ll learn about the history and culture of Canada’s First Nations from your Tour Director. The name Quebec itself derives from Algonquin and means “where the river narrows,” referring to the St. Lawrence River in Quebec City.
With the rest of the day yours to claim, consider setting sail on an optional cruise along the St. Lawrence River—a glittering, skyline-framed way to toast your arrival in Montreal. Prefer to stay on dry land? Wander the lantern-lit terraces and bistros of Old Montreal and let the city’s after-dark personality draw you in. In the summer, numerous festivals take over the city with free street performances and a buzzing atmosphere. And don’t forget to treat yourself to a poutine. This concoction of fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy is a hearty Montreal staple.
Day 5: Sightseeing tour of Montreal
Included meal: Breakfast
Few cities wear two cultures as effortlessly as Montreal—and this morning, a local guide is on hand to help you navigate the city’s French and English traditions. Set out on a panoramic tour sweeping across Montreal’s most iconic landmarks.
- Roll past the grand neo-Gothic main campus of McGill University and cruise down the atmospheric cobblestone streets of Old Montreal.
- Continue past the Place Jacques-Cartier, home to Montreal’s grand city hall; by a bohemian stretch of St. Denis Street lined with shops and the city’s quintessential walk-up homes; and past the stately Montreal Museum of Fine Arts before pulling up for a photo stop at Notre-Dame Basilica, its twin towers presiding over Old Montreal.
- Wind your way up Mount Royal, an ancient volcanic peak that crowns the city, before stepping inside St. Joseph’s Oratory—one of the world’s largest domed basilicas and a deeply revered pilgrimage site. Take a moment to absorb the grandeur before your tour wraps up at your hotel.
The afternoon is yours to fill as you please. If your appetite for the city is still growing, join our optional food walking tour through the sun-warmed streets of Old Montreal, where pillowy bagels, gravlax sandwiches, and boards of artisanal cheese await at every turn. Prefer to strike out on your own? Make your way to the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood, a tree-lined enclave of colorful Victorian row houses, independent bookshops, and trendy sidewalk cafes that perfectly capture Montreal’s laid-back, creative spirit.
Stowe, Vermont2 nights
Day 6: von Trapp Family Lodge via Shelburne Museum & Ben and Jerry’s
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Cross the border into Vermont and continue to the pastoral setting of the Shelburne Museum, one of New England’s most beloved and unexpected cultural treasures. But first, stop in Burlington for a little free time to grab lunch and get your first taste of Vermont’s easygoing charm.
- Follow a local guide through the Shelburne Museum, where an eclectic trove of American folk art, quilts, horse-drawn carriages, and even a fully restored 1915 steamboat tell the story of everyday New England ingenuity and artistry.
- After the guided tour, roam the sprawling grounds at your own pace—there’s always another hidden gem tucked around the next corner.
- Make your way to the Ben & Jerry’s factory for a behind-the-scenes tour and a tasting of Vermont’s most iconic frozen export.
Continue to the highlight of today’s journey: the von Trapp Family Lodge, an Austrian-inspired mountain retreat tucked into the rolling hills of Stowe that inspired a legacy as storied as the family behind it. As the sun dips behind the Green Mountains, gather with your group for an included dinner at the lodge, served alongside your choice of beer or wine—the perfect way to toast your arrival at one of the tour’s most anticipated stops.
Day 7: von Trapp Family tour
Included meal: Breakfast
Today is all about digging deeper into the remarkable story behind the von Trapp Family Lodge—the real-life inspiration behind “The Sound of Music” and the beloved Vermont home of one of history’s most extraordinary families.
- Separate fact from Hollywood fiction as you take an in-depth look at how the von Trapp family made their daring escape from Austria and ultimately found their home in the rolling hills of Stowe.
- Watch a 20-minute documentary chronicling Maria’s final journey back to Salzburg—a quietly moving portrait of a life well lived.
- Pay your respects at the family cemetery, where Maria, the Captain, and many of their children were laid to rest amid the peaceful Vermont countryside.
- Wander the lodge’s grounds and say hello to the resident highland cows—shaggy, soulful, and entirely photogenic.
Afterward, head into the picture-perfect village of Stowe for a little free time. Browse the independent shops lining Main Street, duck into a cozy cafe for lunch, or simply soak up the kind of unhurried, small-town charm that makes Vermont so easy to fall for.
Then, venture out to a local family-owned sugar shack for a hands-on look at the age-old art of maple sugaring. Learn how sap becomes syrup during a sugaring presentation, then roam the grounds at your own pace—and don’t leave without browsing the selection of locally made maple products to bring a little Vermont sweetness home with you.

Trade Vermont’s rolling green hills for the rugged grandeur of New Hampshire’s White Mountains region, with a pair of memorable stops along the way.
- Step into a working cider mill for a self-guided tour that’s as local as it gets—learn how apples, bees, and maple trees collaborate to produce local specialties like apple cider, fluffy donuts, and hard cider before settling in for a tasting of the crisp, refreshing results.
- Prepare for one of New England’s most thrilling rides—tackling the summit of Mount Washington aboard its eponymous cog railway, the first mountain-climbing train in the world.
- Board your narrated carriage and chug upward through three distinct climate zones, taking in the dramatically shifting landscape as the treeline gives way to open alpine terrain and the summit comes into view.
- Arrive at the top of the Northeast with time to explore—visit the Sherman Adams Visitor Center, breathe in the panoramic views, and soak up the singular thrill of standing at the highest point in the region. Pack a waterproof jacket and a warm hat: even in summer, Mount Washington is notorious for the “world’s worst weather,” and rain, ice, or even snow are always on the table.
Conclude your journey at your hotel in the White Mountains region and get settled in.
Please note: Depending on the season and weather conditions, the cog train may only ascend halfway up Mount Washington.
Boston, Massachusetts2 nights
Day 9: Boston via Lexington & Concord

- Cross into Massachusetts and arrive in Lexington. Drive past a striking collection of monuments and parks that honor the militiamen who stood their ground on the morning the American Revolution began.
- Head to Concord, tracing the very route Paul Revere rode on his legendary midnight warning. Pass the storied homes of celebrated American authors—Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, who all once called this town home—before making your way to the North Bridge, where the “shot heard round the world” was fired and the Revolutionary War truly began.
Arrive in Boston and enjoy free time for the rest of the day. If you’re feeling energetic, the city is a walker’s paradise with widely available public transportation. Head to the Charles River Esplanade, Boston Common, or Public Garden before turning in for the day—these leaf-lined, pedestrian-friendly green spaces become a magical display of colorful foliage in the fall.
Day 10: Duck Boat tour of Boston
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Boston is best savored slowly, and this morning is yours to do just that with some free time. For a memorable start, join us for an optional excursion to walk the tree-lined paths and ponds of Boston Common, and to visit the opulent Wang Theatre, modeled after the grand opera houses of Europe—expect gilded moldings, chandeliers dripping with crystal, and sweeping curved staircases. Prefer to set your own agenda? Settle into a cafe, browse the boutiques of Newbury Street, or let the city’s energy carry you wherever it will.
When the afternoon rolls around, regroup with your fellow travelers and climb aboard a Duck Boat to uncover Boston’s layered past from a whole new vantage point. These iconic amphibious vessels glide through the heart of the city before splashing down into the Charles River, giving you a two-for-one perspective on Boston’s storied streets and beloved waterway.
- Roll through the distinctive red brick row homes of Beacon Hill, past the green expanse of Boston Common and the swan-dotted Public Garden, and by the gilded dome of the Massachusetts State House. From there, you’ll encounter the Old State House, site of the infamous Boston Massacre, as well as Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.
- Spot the steeple of the Old North Church rising above the rooftops of the North End, and pay your respects at the moving Robert Gould Shaw Memorial and the solemn Holocaust Memorial.
- Splash down into the Charles River for a scenic cruise and drink in sweeping views of Boston and Cambridge—and, if you’re lucky, you may even get the chance to take the wheel and steer the boat yourself.
Later this evening, celebrate your trip at a farewell dinner with your group, served with beer or wine.
Please note: The Duck Boat tour is weather-dependent. Groups may also be split across two vehicles.

Then, gather with your fellow travelers one last time for a farewell dinner experience that couldn’t be more Maine if it tried. You’ll tuck into two New England classics on one unforgettable sendoff.
- Roll up your sleeves for a hands-on oyster shucking class, learning to pry shells open like a seasoned pro before slurping down six briny, regional oysters that you shucked yourself.
- Learn the art of crafting a proper Maine-style lobster roll: Pile your ingredients high, take that first glorious bite, and wash it all down with a glass of Prosecco or a cold beer.
