Day 1: Travel day
Included meal: Dinner
Board your overnight flight to Naples today.
Sorrento Peninsula4 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Naples & transfer to the Sorrento Peninsula
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Italy! After touching down, transfer to your hotel in Sorrento—the heart of its namesake peninsula. Our recommendation for freshening up this afternoon? Order an espresso con panna, served with a heaping dollop of fresh whipped cream. And take your time: Italians don’t usually take their coffee to go, so sidle up to the coffee bar and savor yours slowly.
Tonight, you’ll meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Food walking tour of Sorrento
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Liqueur tasting
A tangle of stone alleyways. Bustling beaches backed by a wall of cliffs. Sorrento’s historic center is a feast for the senses—and we haven’t even mentioned the food yet. This morning, meet up with a local guide and strike out into town for a culinary walking tour.
- Snap photos of the Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s main square, before winding your way through the Old Town’s lanes and stopping at a caffetteria. The menu for your first tasting: Warm sfogliatelle paired with a velvety shot of espresso.
- Pass the fresco-covered Sedil Dominova and the Baroque Cathedral of Saints Philip and James, two of old Sorrento’s defining landmarks. Afterward, pause at a family-run gastronomia—a food store specializing in local goods. There, dig into a tasting of tangy cheeses, cured meats, and other Campanian goodies.
- Continue your feast with a sampling of pizza fritta—a beloved Neapolitan street food made with deep-fried dough. Then, wander past the galleries and workshops lining Via San Cesareo, detouring once again to enjoy homemade limoncello and artisanal gelato.
- End your tour at the Villa Comunale and bask in the view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. You’ll then head to Marina Grande for some free time; take in the weathered wharves and pastel-hued buildings of Sorrento’s old fishing village before calling it a day.
Hungry for more? Add our optional excursion to an agriturismo, or farm stay, to tour its fields and tuck into a four-course dinner. Or, use your free time to relax in Sorrento proper—maybe with a refreshing dip at Bagni Salvatore.
Please note: The order of your tour’s tasting and the vendors used may vary based on seasonal hours and your group’s size. Furthermore, the tour takes place rain or shine, so prepare accordingly.
Day 4: Free day on the Sorrento Peninsula
Included meal: Breakfast
How will you fill your free day on the Sorrento Peninsula? For some sun and serenity (and a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous), add our excursion to the resort island of Capri. If you choose to spend some time on your own, many towns in the area are connected via public bus. Ask your Tour Director for a recommendation on what to see—and, more importantly, what to eat!
Day 5: A day on the Amalfi Coast in Positano
Included meal: Breakfast
This morning, climb aboard a minibus for a scenic drive along the seaside roads of the Sorrento Peninsula. Stop at the outskirts of Positano—a clutch of sherbet-colored villas, built into the cliffs, that marks the western end of the Amalfi Coast—and hitch a ride into the heart of town. Once there, the rest of the day’s yours to do as you please: Consider doing some shopping on the pedestrianized Via dei Mulini, paying homage to an icon of the Black Madonna at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, or stretching out on the pebbly sands of Spiaggia Grande.
When it’s time to head home, trade your minibus for a public ferry. The silhouette of Positano, the rocky Sirenuse Islands rising out of the Tyrrhenian Sea—keep your camera handy to snap photos of them all. Before you know it, you’ll be mooring in Sorrento.
Please note: The ferry ride is weather-dependent and runs seasonally, from April through October. If it’s unavailable, your group will return to Sorrento via minibus. Additionally, be prepared to climb stairs and navigate steep inclines while exploring Positano.
Cilento Coast4 nights
Day 6: Cilento Coast via Amalfi & Minori
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
A vacation destination since ancient Roman times, the Amalfi Coast is home to some of Italy’s most iconic (and beautiful) scenery. After yesterday’s glimpse, you’ll explore more of the region by land and sea.
- Board a ferry, bid farewell to Sorrento, and sail to Amalfi. Framed by steep cliffs emerging from azure waters, this coastal village seems plucked from a postcard.
- Make your way to the Amalfi Cathedral. Dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew, this ninth-century church houses some of his relics. It’s an architectural masterpiece, too, flaunting a unique blend of Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, and other styles.
- Enjoy some free time in Amalfi (beach, anyone?) before taking to the water once again and cruising to Minori—a UNESCO-listed village dubbed the “Eden of the Amalfi Coast” for its rich culinary heritage.
- Stop at Pasticceria Sal De Riso, a pastry shop, to sample delizia al limone. Made by coating impossibly light sponge cake with a tangy lemon custard, these delightful desserts are synonymous with the Amalfi Coast.
Finally, head by boat and bus to your hotel on the Cilento Coast. With unspoiled landscapes and a calm, quiet atmosphere, this stretch of shore offers a look at what the Amalfi Coast was like before tourism boomed. Settle in and get some rest—you’ll have ample opportunity to take it all in over the coming days.
Please note: The boat portion of your transfer to the Cilento Coast is weather-dependent and seasonal, running from April through October. If unavailable, it will be moved to day 8 or replaced with a sightseeing tour of Salerno.
Day 7: Sightseeing tour of Paestum
Included meal: Breakfast
Home to three of the world’s best-preserved Greek temples, Paestum pays living tribute to that ancient empire’s reach and influence. With a local guide in the lead, you’ll spend the morning touring its UNESCO-listed ruins and unpacking the history in plain sight.
- Learn about the Greek colony that once occupied the land as you walk Paestum’s Doric temples—two dedicated to Hera, one to Athena. (The oldest of the bunch dates to 550 B.C.)
- Head into the Paestum Archaeological Museum, filled with artifacts retrieved from the site, and pause at the Tomb of the Diver. Five limestone slabs, covered in frescoes, make up this famous grave; one of them, painted with a hauntingly beautiful depiction of a man diving into waves, inspired its name.
After wrapping up in Paestum, spend the rest of the day on your terms. To see another side of the Cilento Coast—and dig into the details of the Mediterranean diet—add our optional excursion to the hilltown of Trentinara. Otherwise, relax at your hotel, and maybe go for a swim in a secluded cove.
Day 8: Mozzarella farm visit & Santomiele fig workshop
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting
Since 1907, the Palmieri family has operated a buffalo farm north of Paestum—and today, that estate creates some of the region’s most celebrated mozzarella. Drive inland and spend the morning at Tenuta Vannulo, watching skilled workers transform fresh dairy into silky cheese. Then, settle in for a light lunch of garden salads, olive bread, buffalo milk gelato, and, of course, mozzarella.
After leaving the farm, head deeper into the UNESCO-listed Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Your destination: Santomiele, a revered producer of white figs. (Their DOP-recognized fruits have even graced the table of Queen Elizabeth II.)
- Meet the team behind Santomiele, learn about their sustainable philosophy, and watch artisans process figs entirely by hand—from peeling to shaping and filling.
- Sit down in the sun-drenched laboratory and savor a tasting of fig dishes and confections, paired with wine and unrivaled views of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.
- Browse Santomiele’s on-site shop for the perfect souvenir—or a snack for the ride back to your hotel on the Cilento Coast.
Please note: Fig harvesting and drying season runs from late August through October, and Santomiele specializes in seasonal goods. If one product is out of season, it’ll be replaced with a local alternative that’s in season.
Day 9: Free day on the Cilento Coast
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
If yesterday’s journey inland left you craving more, add today’s optional excursion to your itinerary. Castellabate and Acciaroli—two medieval gems tucked away in the hills of Cilento—await, ready to reveal yet another side of the region. Alternatively, fill your last full day on tour with some well-earned relaxation at your hotel and laze away the hours by the water.
Tonight, gather as a group one last time and celebrate your trip with a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 10: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the Naples airport for your flight home—or stay in the Campanian capital for a few more days on the tour’s extension. (Choose the latter if you simply can’t get enough of the regional cuisine, or can’t wait to roam the ruins of ancient Herculaneum.)
Naples extension
From the medieval churches that pepper its UNESCO-listed historic center to the mythical volcano sitting in the distance, everything about Naples is monumental. (And the same can be said for its sumptuous cuisine.) Craving a taste? Savor the best the city and region have to offer on this extension.
Naples2 nights
Day 10: Transfer to Naples & food walking tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Southern Italy’s largest city, Naples combines old-world charm and bayside beauty in a single, lovely locale. Sail across the Tyrrhenian Sea via public ferry and dock in the Campanian capital; once you arrive, get acquainted with some of its best sights and bites on a food-themed walking tour.
- Walk through the Piazza del Gesu Nuovo—anchored by a towering statue of the Virgin Mary—and view the eponymous church looming over the square.
- Enter the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Part of an eponymous monastery, this church was built in the 14th century, partially destroyed during World War II, and restored in 1953. As you walk its cloister, have your camera ready: Floral majolica tiles adorn this photogenic sanctuary.
- Sample Neapolitan specialties—like decadent Vesuvio chocolates and flaky sfogliatelle—and sip some of the local espresso. In a country idolized for its coffee, the shots pulled in Naples stand out for their quality.
Use your free evening to explore the intersection of culture and history and make a point of catching a show at the San Carlo Theatre, the oldest continually active opera venue in the world. (Just be sure to buy tickets in advance!)
Day 11: Free day in Naples
Included meal: Breakfast
Pompeii wasn’t the only ancient settlement destroyed by Mount Vesuvius: Herculaneum was buried in the same eruption—and unlike its more famous neighbor, its wooden structures and furniture are still largely intact. Add our optional excursion to your itinerary to spend the day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site, or stay in Naples and see more of the city in your free time. For a (literally) off-the-beaten-path option, spring for a guided tour of Napoli Sotterranea, an era-spanning tunnel network containing everything from Greco-Roman aqueducts to World War II air raid shelters.
Whatever you decide, rejoin your groupmates in the evening for a farewell drink before retiring to your hotel room.
