Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Anchorage & musk ox farm
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome lunch
With a local guide leading the way, begin your Alaskan adventure with a sightseeing tour of Anchorage. Nestled between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet, Anchorage offers a unique blend of urban energy and wild beauty. This morning’s tour introduces you to the city’s highlights, from its aviation roots to its seismic past.
- Drive by the Port of Anchorage, a vital hub for goods entering the state and a window into Alaska’s maritime economy.
- Stop at Earthquake Park, where interpretive signs and panoramic views tell the story of the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, one of the most powerful ever recorded.
- Visit Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the world’s busiest seaplane harbor, where you might catch a glimpse of bush pilots taking off for remote corners of the state.
- Pause at the Captain Cook statue, overlooking the waters he once explored, and take in sweeping views of the eponymous inlet and distant mountains.
- Enter the Anchorage Museum, where exhibits explore Alaska’s Indigenous cultures, natural history, and contemporary art.
- Sit down for a welcome lunch, served with beer or wine, and get to know your fellow travelers.
This afternoon, travel into the scenic Matanuska-Susitna Valley to visit a musk ox farm, where you’ll meet these Ice Age survivors up close. Learn about their role in Alaska’s history and the production of qiviuq, a luxurious yarn spun from their underwool—softer than cashmere and warmer than wool.
Later, continue north to the quirky town of Talkeetna, where you can add an optional excursion to have your Tour Director lead you into the night on a guided search for the northern lights. With luck, you’ll witness the aurora borealis ripple across the sky in shades of green and violet—a breathtaking finale to a day full of discovery.
Please note: The northern lights excursion must be added directly through the lodge while on tour. It may take place on day 3 depending on weather conditions and seeing them isn’t guaranteed. The northern lights are best experienced between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. If the viewing extends late into the night, the next morning’s activities will be shifted to allow you to rest up.
