Brussels extension

Cross into Belgium, where every city tells a different story. In Antwerp, soaring spires and lively squares speak to centuries of art and trade. Brussels greets you with ornate guild houses, grand boulevards, and the rich scent of chocolate drifting from corner shops. Stay on to wander its museums, taste its specialties, and, if time allows, lose yourself in the quiet canals of Bruges—a city seemingly untouched by time.

Day 8: Brussels via Antwerp

Included meal: Breakfast

Today, you’ll bid farewell to the Netherlands and cross the border into Belgium, but not before making a worthwhile stop in Antwerp. Long a powerhouse of trade and art, Antwerp rewards even a brief visit with its striking medieval architecture and eclectic cafe culture.

From Antwerp, continue south to Brussels, Belgium’s vibrant, multilingual capital and the unofficial heart of modern Europe. By the time you arrive, the evening is yours to ease into at your own pace. Find a seat at a sidewalk cafe, track down a cone of the city’s legendary frites, or wander the lamplit streets and get your bearings before tomorrow’s full day of sightseeing gets underway.

Day 9: Sightseeing tour of Brussels

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting

Brussels has a way of surprising even the most seasoned traveler. Expect grand boulevards to give way to medieval squares, and world-class museums that sit steps from some of Europe’s finest chocolatiers. Today, a local guide pulls back the curtain on it all, starting from the window of a panoramic bus before taking to the cobblestones on foot.

  • Glide past the Atomium, Brussels’ eccentric landmark, a gleaming steel structure built for the 1958 World’s Fair.
  • Take in the twin-towered St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that has watched over the city since the 13th century, as well as the stately Royal Palace, the official residence of the Belgian monarch.
  • Roll through the museum district and past the elegant Sablon neighborhood, home to the Church of Our Blessed Lady of the Sablon and the city’s renowned antique dealers and chocolate shops.
  • Pass the Great Synagogue of Europe, one of the most significant Jewish landmarks on the continent, and the imposing Palace of Justice, before stepping out for a brief stop at the sweeping Jubilee Park.
  • Transition to a walking tour through Brussels’ historic center, culminating at the Grand Place—Grote Markt—one of the most breathtaking medieval squares in all of Europe. Here, ornate guild houses and the gilded Gothic town hall frame a space that UNESCO has recognized as a World Heritage Site.
  • Stop into a local chocolatier for a tasting that puts Belgium’s most famous export front and center. With hundreds of chocolate makers calling Brussels home, consider this a very delicious introduction.

With your guided tour wrapped up, the afternoon is yours. Browse the Grand Place at your own pace and make sure to track down a proper Belgian waffle with all the trimmings.

Day 10: Free day in Brussels

Included meal: Breakfast

Your last full day on tour is yours to spend however you see fit. Make the most of it by adding on today’s optional day trip to Bruges. This remarkably preserved medieval city marries cobblestone lanes, centuries-old guild houses, mirror-still canals, and one postcard-worthy scene after another.

If you’d prefer to linger in Brussels, the city has plenty left to give. Wander the boutiques and antique dealers of the Sablon district, seek out a tucked-away brasserie for a long lunch paired with one of Belgium’s world-renowned abbey beers, or make your way to the Comic Art Museum, a fitting tribute to a country that gave the world Tintin and the Smurfs.

Finally, come together as a group one last time for a farewell drink and toast to a trip well spent.
