Passport & visa requirements

  • In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • There is no visa required for U.S. or Canadian citizens.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Tour pace

  • You will walk for about 1.5 hours daily across mostly flat terrain, including cobblestone streets and unpaved paths, with some hills and stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of boats.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.

Transportation & arrival information

  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead arrive in Milan Malpensa and depart from Venice. A Go Ahead representative will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead for an additional cost.
  • Please note that the transfer between Milan Malpensa airport and your hotel in the Lake Como region is typically more than an hour drive. Please contact us with any questions regarding this transfer.
  • Water taxi rides in Venice are included in the price of the tour extension.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.

Baggage allowance

  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag of 45 total inches (length + width + height) is also permitted.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & packing tips

  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

  • There are no major health risks associated with traveling to Italy.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to My Account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.

Cuisine

  • Venice and Northern Italy are known for flavorful meats and pastries.
  • On the Italian Riviera, a taste of the region's famous basil pesto is a must. Luscious seafood dishes are popular along the shore, but true Ligurians favor simple, traditional recipes like minestrone soup and farinata, an unleavened chickpea pancake.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello

Electricity & air conditioning

  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotel may provide hairdryers, irons and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.

Connectivity

  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.

Time zones

  • Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.

Currency

  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.

Tipping

  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $7USD/CAD to $10USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.

Purchasing excursions on tour

  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Wonderful Trip

This is a great tour with a well planned itenerary and I would highly recommend it. The hotels were all well located and accommodations were excellent. Stefania was instrumental in making this tour a favorite of all tours I have taken. No matter how much one researches before the tour free days and free times can be confusing when at the actual site. Stefania, with her great sense of humor, made sure we knew what was available and most importantly how to get to the sites. I have been on many tours and this was the first time a guide has been this accommodating to the travelers. Many thanks, Stefania. Thanks also to our bus driver, Paulo who was a joy to be around.

Hello! We’re so glad that you recommend this itinerary. We appreciate your feedback on the various aspects of the tour, such as your accommodations and your Tour Director. It sounds like your Tour Director, in particular, played an important role in ensuring a smooth and successful journey for your group. We’re thrilled to hear it, and we will be sure to share your feedback with her. Thank you for your kind review. We hope to welcome you on tour again!

Wonderful

Such a beautiful country with a great tour leader (Marianna). Although the accommodations were tight, they were typical of Europe. The food was very good and the itinerary, though a bit grueling at times, allowed us to see and experience as much as possible. It was a wonderful experience with a group size that was small enough to get to know everyone. Looking forward to my next trip with Go Ahead.

Hi Helene! We couldn't agree more about the beauty of Italy. We're so glad you enjoyed most aspects of your tour, such as your food, your group, and the overall itinerary. We appreciate your feedback very much, and we look forward to welcoming you on tour again next year!

awesome trip

This was perhaps my best tour with GAT. I've done 7 so far. Our tour director, Laura, was superb. Best TD I've had with GAT. We saw so many beautiful sights. I'm still digesting my adventure. Great hotels. Great meals. Comfy bus and wonderful drivers. Good itinerary. When something came up that altered plans, our TD came up with great alternatives. Good tour.

Hi Mary Lee! We’re thrilled to hear that this may have been your favorite tour (out of seven - wow!) with Go Ahead. We are glad to hear that, between the people, the sites, and all the logistics, this tour went off without a hitch. We also appreciate you letting us know how helpful your Tour Director was when you needed alternative ideas for things to do and places to see. Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on tour again!

Amazing Italian Riviera!

This is my second Go Ahead tour and like my first tour with GAT I had so much fun. I enjoyed a lot. I love Lake Como, feeding pigeons outside Milan cathedral was an experience of a lifetime. The gondola ride was awesome! The landscapes of the Italian Riviera are amazing! Venice is enchanting! Mariana is a 5 star tour director! She surprised me with a copy of the photo she took when I was doing the gondola ride. With Go Ahead Tours, you can never wrong!

Hi Menardo! Thank you for your rave review! We’re so glad your second Go Ahead tour was just as amazing as your first. You certainly chose an amazing region of Italy to explore, and it sounds like it provided you with an array of unique and memorable experiences. We appreciate you letting us know what a fantastic job your Tour Director did. We will be sure to pass your feedback along to her. We hope to welcome you on your third Go Ahead tour soon!

The sites on this tour are a MUST SEE!

This was our first tour with Go Ahead. Tamara was our Tour Director and she was EXCELLENT! She was extremely knowledgeable, well-organized and simply a joy to be around! She kept everything moving along seamlessly for all 34 travelers throughout the entire 11 days. We would definitely do another tour with Tamara! The daily breakfasts at each hotel were nice and offered a variety of food items and beverages. Unfortunately, we felt that the majority of the "included dinners" could be improved upon. Our best meals were when we went off on our own to dine at local restaurants recommended by our Tour Director. All of the optional tours and the local guides were outstanding and everyone simply adored our very skilled bus driver, Italo! Tamara went above and beyond and arranged for an additional tour of the Carrara Marble Quarry on one of our free days in the Italian Riviera. The tour was wonderful and it ended up being one of the many highlights of our trip! The hotel locations for Lake Como, the Italian Riviera and Venice were outstanding. The hotel location in Milan was merely average. However, it was our understanding that because of the Expo, hotels were hard to come by in Milan at this time. There was a bit of squabbling (which I'm sure is common) about hotel rooms and who received the better rooms with views, etc. In order to try and eliminate this problem for future Go Ahead tours, we suggest offering travelers a varied room rate package upfront that you can sign up for when booking the tour. Some travelers don't mind paying a little more for a premium room at each hotel while others may be satisfied with staying in a standard or economy room while traveling. This way, each traveler knows what type of room to expect when they arrive at the hotel and there are no surprises. It's always good to have options! Overall, this was an enjoyable experience. The sites were amazing and Tamara, Italo and the folks in our tour group made this a very pleasant and memorable trip for us.

Italian Countryside

This trip was amazing! Would highly recommend if someone wants to see something of Italy other than cities. We did two tours back-to-back with three days in Venice between the tours. Did get to see Venice and Milan, but what we enjoyed most was the Italian Riviera and Cinque Terre. Beautiful area. Excursions were great. Guide was excellent. Only wish we could have stayed in the smaller venues longer. Would also have been better if we had been able to reverse the tours--cities first and countryside second. Cities were tiring; countryside was restful. Monique, our tour guide, was wonderful. She was well organized, knowledgeable, and friendly. One thing which she did which was very helpful was to tell participants that everyone should have an opportunity to sit in the front seats on the coach. Her plan worked very well; participants did trade off each day. It would have been good if she had handed out evaluation forms at the start of the tour since, by the end, we all agreed, we had actually forgotten what the welcome meal was like. Would be a better policy to hand out evals at the start so people could fill out as the program progressed. Would highly recommend this tour to friends.

Tour meals

I thought the tour itself was very nice. If you take excursions though, you get stuck with the meals Go Ahead chooses. I also want to remind you that you have the Go Ahead meals the first night in each city. I'm in Italy and thinking that the food would be spectacular, it definitely was not. We took the tour to Bellagio and that was by far the worst dinner we had. I'm thinking we will have incredible seafood. Not so, there was veal three nights with Go Ahead's meals. I think the tour agency should let you have a chance to choose your own meal. Have a variety to choose from. I would have preferred getting a credit for these dinners because when my husband and I ate various restaurants, the dinners were delicious. Just as they should be when traveling in Italy.

Thank you for choosing to take this journey with Go Ahead, and for taking the time to review your experience on tour with us. We are so glad that you found the tour itself to be very nice, and regret to learn that the meals on tour did not meet your expectations. When selecting restaurants and menu items, we do our best to choose dishes that our travelers will enjoy, and that will give them a taste for the local cuisine. We regret to learn that you did not feel that we succeeded in this in your case. Our on-tour decisions are made with our travelers’ interest and opinions in mind, and are constantly collecting ratings and reviews to ensure we are aware of any areas where improvements could be made. These restaurants have received good ratings from those who have participated in this tour in the past, and we will continue to monitor their performance. Thank you for your important and thoughtful review, and we hope to welcome you onto another Go Ahead tour in the future.

I Love Italy

We enjoyed the places we visited and our guide, though if you take this tour you must do some of your own planning. Though we went to Milan, we had to do our own Last Supper tour. I f you want to see certain things on your tour do your own research before hand since your GOahead Tour does not necessarily cover all the important things you may want to see. The rooms were not all equal. In other words some people got beautiful views of the water and some did not. some were large with balconies and some were cramped. Very disappointing, since we all paid the same amount. Also very bad idea when we were traveling we basically stopped at truck stops for lunch, for an hour!! They should stop at small towns to have a nice lunch. The rooms were just "okay".

Dear Judy, We are so pleased to hear that you love Italy, and we thank you for choosing to make this journey with Go Ahead! Our aim when designing our tours is to provide a completely customizable experience. We have certain components that are included in the tour to offer structure and cultural context. We also offer optional excursions for travelers who are interested in participating. Our expert Tour Directors are trained to provide suggestions and support for those travelers who are interested in sights or activities that are not pre-planned by Go Ahead. We understand that each traveler has their own interests, and it is our hope that this arrangement empowers our travelers to create the trip of their dreams. In regards to the hotels on tour, we work hard so that all our travelers receive rooms with the same essential amenities and standard of quality. We do understand that there is the inherent possibility for variation between hotels and room assignments. Rooms are assigned to travelers at each hotel’s discretion, and are not allocated with any intention of giving some travelers a better experience than any others. Whenever possible, we aim to include travel stops in scenic local surroundings to break up a drive, or simply pause for lunch. We regret to learn that you were dissatisfied with the stops made on your trip, but there are some cases in which we find that detouring too far off the course could increase travel time by an excessive amount and limit time in the final destination. In these cases, we find it is in the group’s best interest to make a quick stop that is convenient, and motor on to the destination. Thank you again for traveling with Go Ahead, and for taking the time to provide this thoughtful review! We hope you choose to travel with Go Ahead again soon!

Very satisified with my tour

Tour director was pleasant, knowledgeable and had us on time for everything. The hotels, while not 5 star hotels were more than adequate. Breakfast was included everyday which were adequate, typical European style buffet breakfasts...some better than others but none great. The dinners were just "fair" at best. While it was fun to dine with the whole group of fellow travelers the meals were limited to 2 choices at most. I would not rate any of them above the "fair" rating. I would recommend that these dinners not be included in the future. Local travel guides were "good" to "excellent" throughout. All in all, I enjoyed my tour and would recommend it

Dear Ken, Thank you very much for taking the time to review your recent trip with us to Venice, Como, and the Italian Riviera! We are glad that you enjoyed your tour, and that you would recommend it! We take pride in the components that we include on tour, and are glad to learn that you were satisfied with our choice of Tour Director, hotels, and local guides. We aim to select restaurants for included meals that give our travelers a valuable and authentic local culinary experience. The restaurants visited on your tour receive consistently high ratings from your fellow travelers, and are monitored closely by Go Ahead to ensure that we maintain a high standard of quality. We are sorry to learn you did not feel these meals met your expectations, and we thank you for letting us know so that we may better serve future travelers. We happy that you are very satisfied with your tour, and we do hope to welcome you onto another Go Ahead tour in the future!

Pascal

The trip was great. Pascal did a great job. And Angus help a lot also. This is the first time I have traveled with Go Ahead Tours but it will not be my last. This is my 5th trip to Europe and my most enjoyable. The only thing I would say is that I wish we had spend one more day in Venice and possibly less time in Milan. Or maybe we could have just stayed one more day. Anyway, it was a wonderful experience. Pascal went out of his way to make sure everyone in our group was well accommodated.

I'm in Love with Italy

The Italian Riviera, Lake Como, Lugano, Cinque Terre, Verona, Pisa and Venice were enchanting to say the least. I was in love the minute I stepped off of the tour bus and into Lake Como! The sheer beauty of all the places we visited were breathtaking. I have never had such a nice & relaxing tour. This area of Italy was picture perfect! The food, wine, fellow travelers all exceeded my expectations. The people of Italy were so kind and happy. I know why now. I wasn't ready to leave. I'm ready to go back and spend a month. This was truly a wonderful experience. I'd recommend this tour to anyone that is interested in visiting Italy. Our tour director, Pascal made sure that we knew all there was to know about the regions we visited. He was extremely knowledgable. He went out of his way to make us happy. On our free day, he orchestrated a visit to Pisa for us because we wanted to go. I cannot say enough kind words about him, he was the best tour director I've ever had and will request him on future trips! You could just tell that he loves teaching travelers about these beautiful places. Pascal really made our our journey through Italy special. We also had a representative from Go Ahead Tours along with us. Angus was very helpful and knowledgable. He was a pleasure to travel with. If you are planning a trip to Italy, I highly recommend this tour.

Cinque Terre Delight

This was an amazing tour. I could not be happier with everything. Our meals were wonderful. Hotels well placed. Seeing Cinque Terre and Venice was everything I hoped and more. Pace is just right. Quaint, authentic, original, magical. I recommend this tour 100%.

My son 50th birthday gift

I took my daughter, son and daughter-in-law on this trip for my son's 50th birthday. I took Go Ahead Tours 4 years ago to Southern Italy,Naples, Rome Sorrento. I had a wonderful time on that trip. I fell in love with Italy and wanted my children to experience the beauty also. We had a great time, met some wonderful people and saw a beautiful country. Thank you Go Ahead Tours. It will be a memory we all will treasure.

Beautiful

This was our first Go Ahead tour. The sights of Venice, Lake Como and the Italian Riviera were fabulous. Our tour director, Carmen, was knowledgeable, patient and amusing. The balance of guided and independent free time was just what we were looking for. Mark and I met many interesting people that were in our group. Thank you for a wonderful vacation!

The good and the ugly

the 'GOOD' > what an awesome trip.Every place we stopped was an new and exciting experience. Our tour director (Gabriella) was awesome. I would go on another tour with her in a heartbeat. Her expertise kept the whole group well informed as to the daily endeavors. She was well organized and learned about each area we visited. We were well pleased with the accommodations also. Some very unique. the cities along the way were in themselves unique. Now the 'UGLY' (already spoke to Nicole about the negative experience and am satisfied with her answers) the flight arrangements were unacceptable. We spent 25 hours from Savannah to Milan in airports or on flights. I flew to Australia in less time!! We had a total of 8 hours sitting in airports.(4 in Newark and 4 in Zurich) again unacceptable and an unnecessary waste of time. I specifically asked not to use United...guess what we got....there were direct flights form Atlanta,Newark and Detroit all reachable from savannah (I checked). I asked your flight coordinator to rectify the situation.I got no help... needless to say I was disappointed in the result. the flight going over left a doubt in the quality of your customer service and doubt as to our use of go ahead tours again.. There was absolutely no reason for the stop at Zurich. I suggest before you finalize a customers flights you have contact with them to coordinate to acceptability of the travel arrangements

Dear Jim, Thank you for taking the time to review your most recent experience with Go Ahead Tours! Your feedback is very valuable to us. Go Ahead Tours understands the importance of flight arrangements and we do our best to make sure we are providing the most ideal flight routings possible. We have an option to book flights for majority of our tours with our travelers directly so that we can ensure you will be satisfied with your itineraries. Some tours aren’t set up for this system quite yet, but we are continuously working to improve these restrictions. We want to make sure our travelers will have a wonderful experience from start to finish, so we are happy to work with you and take your specific flight requests into consideration before finalizing the details when you make your reservations. I am glad to hear that the rest of your tour went well and I hope that the next time we welcome you on tour we will be able to provide you with a flight itinerary that you are more satisfied with!
