Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Naples

Fly to Naples, the city at the heart of Italy's Campania region.

Day 2 - Naples

Touch down in Southern Italy. A Go Ahead representative meets you at the airport and then accompanies you to your hotel. The rest of your day is free to explore Naples. Tonight, enjoy an included traditional pizza dinner made by the experts, as pizza was invented here in Naples. (B in flight, D)

Day 3 - Sorrento

A professional local guide leads this morning’s sightseeing tour of Naples, a city that united politically with the rest of the Italian mainland just 140 years ago. After passing by the 14th-century Duomo, the colorful harborfront, and the Castel dell’Ovo, you’ll visit the National Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. This afternoon, en route to Sorrento, stop in the provincial capital of Caserta. A local guide leads you on a sightseeing tour of the city, including the magnificent palace often compared to Versailles. (B)

Day 4 - Sorrento

Step back into the 1st century A.D. on today’s visit to the legendary ruins of Pompeii. When Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, it covered this Roman resort town in volcanic ash, perfectly preserving its temples, theaters and homes. Now that nearly the entire site has been excavated, you can join a sightseeing guide for a firsthand look at what life was once like for wealthy citizens of the ancient Roman empire. (B, D)

Day 5 - Sorrento

A day trip takes you from Sorrento across the Bay of Naples to the famed Isle of Capri, whose magnificent beaches have been celebrated ever since the days of the early Roman emperors. During your free time, you can stay and explore Capri or you can take a bus to visit the village of Anacapri. Weather permitting, you’ll journey by boat around the island to view its many caves and grottos. Return to Sorrento, where you might wish to attend our optional Tarantella Dinner, featuring local cuisine and a lively performance highlighting the tarantella, a mesmerizing Italian folk dance. (B)

Tarantella Dinner $79 USD

Tarantella Dinner

Savor a locally prepared dinner at a charming Sorrento restaurant, followed by a live Tarantella performance at Teatro Tasso.

Day 6 - Sorrento

Journey along the 31-mile Amalfi Coast this morning, making your way through the picture-perfect towns that hug the coastline and taking in magnificent views of the sea. The coastline has inspired everyone from Homer (who modeled the Siren Isles after the islands near Positano) to modern-day Hollywood filmmakers. Later, travel into the countryside on our optional mozzarella farm tour and learn about the process of making this world-famous cheese. The excursion also includes dinner with a limoncello tasting. (B)

Mozzarella Farm Tour $59 USD

Day 7 - Rome

As you make your way north to Rome, stop in Montecassino, whose landmark abbey was founded in A.D. 529 by St. Benedict. It was here that St. Benedict wrote his Rule, which served as the foundation for monastic code throughout western Europe. Arrive later in Rome, the Eternal City. (B)

Day 8 - Rome

This morning, follow over 2,000 years of history during a sightseeing tour of Imperial Rome. You’ll also view the Forum—the ancient meeting place of the Romans—as well as the Colosseum. You’ll then have a free afternoon to continue your explorations of the city. Tonight, you might wish to attend our optional Dinner with Tenors, an evening of authentic Roman cuisine and live opera music. (B)

Travel Guide

Passport & Visa

In order to enter Italy, U.S. citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return to the United States. No visa is required for U.S. citizens. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must contact the Italian consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Health

There are no major health risks when traveling to Italy. Travelers should take precautions for sun exposure during the summer months. It is always advisable to check with your doctor or health-care provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

Transportation / Walking on tour

Round-trip flights arrive in Naples and depart from Rome. When you first arrive in Naples, a Go Ahead representative will meet you at the airport. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.

Included transportation on “Naples, Sorrento & Rome” is by private motorcoach. In your free time, you may wish to explore the main cities by public transportation.

In Naples, most local buses—called ANM— depart from Piazza Garibaldi. Bus maps are available from their offices at the western end of the piazza. Otherwise, walking is probably your best bet, although there is also a subway system (actually more above ground) that works for most locations. Taxis can be expensive.

Clothing & Packing Tips

Light, loose-fitting clothing that provides comfort when exploring the sights is essential for your tour. A sun hat, sunglasses and a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers are recommended for sightseeing. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality—a lightweight sports jacket and emergency rainwear are advised. If you plan to visit an especially elegant restaurant or attend the opera or theater, you will probably feel more comfortable with something more formal to wear. Also, remember that bare legs and shoulders are officially not allowed in churches or other religious sites. Entrance may be denied on this basis.

Currency

The euro is the currency you will be using on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in Italy rather than in the United States, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be exchanged for cash at local banks, as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges. Please note: With the conversion to the euro, it has been increasingly difficult to exchange traveler’s checks outside of Europe’s major cities—both at banks and shops—and they often attract higher fees.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour it is customary to offer your Go Ahead Tour Director and driver a gratuity.

We recommend €2 per person per day for your driver and €4 to €6 per person for your tour director. If applicable, we also recommend €1 per local guide.

Tips may only be paid in cash.
