Fiji Hindi is a dialect of Hindi that’s spoken by the Indo-Fijian people, who make up about 37% of the population.

• Kava ceremony. If you’re invited to participate in a kava ceremony, show respect by sitting cross-legged on the floor and waiting for the bowl to be offered to you. Clap your hands once before and once after drinking as a sign of gratitude.

• Dress modestly. While Fiji has a relaxed atmosphere, particularly on the beaches and resorts, it’s essential to dress modestly when visiting villages or religious sites. Women should avoid wearing revealing clothing, and men should wear shirts in public areas.

• Lovo. A traditional Fijian feast prepared in an earthen oven, lovo is made with a variety of meats and root vegetables. The ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves and cooked underground with hot stones. This slow-cooking method imparts a smoky and delicious flavor to the food.

• Kokoda. This ceviche-like dish is made with raw fish—usually mahi-mahi or tuna—marinated in lemon or lime juice and mixed with coconut milk, onions, tomatoes, and chili peppers. The acid in the citrus juice “cooks” the fish, creating a refreshing and flavorful meal.

• Palusami. A popular side dish, palusami is made with young taro leaves cooked in coconut cream with onions and garlic, and sometimes with meat or seafood. The mixture is then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed until the flavors meld, resulting in a rich, creamy delicacy.
