Weather

Budapest
Due to the topography of Budapest, especially the Alps to the west, the weather varies greatly between seasons. Winter usually begins in December with damp, cloudy days. It is never too long and is scattered with a few sunny days throughout. Summer weather is the exact opposite, with the warm days taking hold in April. Summer days are long and there is on average 10 hours of sun a day. Expect warm, sunny days with a good dose of humidity until September.

Rain is consistent throughout the entire year, with an average of 64cm of annual rainfall. In the spring, beginning in April, you can expect frequent showers. The average temperature in Budapest is 50°F (11.2°C), fluctuating from the overall country average by only a few degrees. July brings the hottest weather with the average temperature 72°F (20°C). Expect the summers to offer drier weather than the spring. Autumns bring a relief from summer’s heat, with cool, rainy weather. January is the coldest month of the year, on average 36°F (2.1 °C). Though the winter can be bitter it is usually brief. For the most consistent weather, with the best days to explore the city, traveling in the summer is recommended.

Vienna

The climate in Vienna is moderate. It usually does not get bitter cold in the winter and on average it is not sweltering hot in the summer. Vienna’s moderate summers usually range from 60°F and 76°F (15°C and 25°C). On average, the city sees seven to nine days of rain a month in the spring and summer. Thunderstorms can come without warning, but they are not prolonged. With a lightweight rain jacket rainy weather is tolerable. While the winters are chilly, there are not extreme fluctuations in temperature. The average temperature in January is 23°F and 34°F (-4°C to 1°C), with less than nine days of the snow each month throughout the winter.

Annually, Vienna receives about 2,000 hours of sunshine. Most of this sunshine occurs during the spring and summer. Spring, summer and autumn are suggested times to travel in Vienna. Like most European countries, the height of tourism season is at the end of the summer. To avoid crowds, look to tour Vienna in the spring and autumn.

Prague

The weather in Prague is never static during any of the seasons. Be prepared for sun and rain in the summer and clouds with a chance of snow in the winter. It is common for the temperature in the summer to be between 73°F to 84°F. Expect random days with high humidity that make the city feel sweltering hot. Also, Prague receives the most rainfall in the summer than any other time in during the year. The wettest months are between May and August. In autumn the weather is moderate with cool, breezy days. The trees perched on the hills around Prague turn into a spectrum of colors, making photographs even more vibrant. Also, the fall is not the height of the tourist season so there are less crowds and prices are a bit more reasonable. It is the coldest in Prague in January, with an average of only 50 hours of sunshine the whole month. It stays cloudy during the winter with occasional snow. The majority of the snowfall occurs in the areas outside of the city. The average temperature in the winter fluctuates between 12°F to 32°F.
