Versailles' Gardens
Louis XIV, known as the “Sun King,” set new standards among European royalty for the decadence of his reign. It took 50 years and 35,000 workers to turn Versailles, once a small hunting lodge, into the most magnificent château in all of France—designed by Europe’s most talented 17th-century architects and landscape designers to be the envy of royalty worldwide. On this excursion, you will see Versailles’ famous gardens in all their glory. You’ll also pass by the Petit Trianon, the private residence of Marie Antoinette. Please note: This excursion involves extensive walking outdoors.

Day 4 - Paris
Embark on a full-day excursion to the nearby Loire Valley. Highlights of your day in the country include visits to Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceau, where you’ll enjoy a specialty lunch in the château’s orangery. Château de Chambord was designed to suit the short-term needs of King François I; the new château, the largest ever built in the Loire Valley, was intended to both intimidate François’ rivals and to allow the king to be near his mistress. Château de Chenonceau, by contrast, is known colloquially as the Château de Femmes—some of its famous female residents included Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici. This excursion concludes with a tasting of Touraine wines at the Plou et Fils wine cellar. This evening, you might consider joining our optional excursion to the Moulin Rouge, where you’ll enjoy a can-can show and a champagne toast.

Then, you’ll return to Paris for a visit to the Musée de L’Orangerie, where you can see works by Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir and of course, Monet (eight of his Water Lilies paintings are on permanent display here).
