Gondola Ride with Music with the Family

Glide down Venice's famous canals in one of the city's iconic black gondolas. These boats were first painted black in 1562, not in deference to the ravages of the Black Death (which had ended 300 years earlier), but rather by decree of the Doge, the ruler of Venice. Gondolas in that time were used by everyone to get around the Venetian Lagoon, and all gondolas were once brightly colored. But the Doge decreed that only nobility could travel in colored gondolas, so over the centuries, ordinary Venetians developed the elegant black silhouette we know today. A musician serenades you as your gondola cruises through the city. If you ask nicely, maybe the gondolier will let your kids take a turn on the oar! Please note: This excursion runs as weather permits. Each gondola holds between four and six passengers.

Day 4 - Florence

This morning, travel to Florence, birthplace of the Italian language, the Renaissance and opera. It’s also home to the indoor Central Market (Mercato Centrale), which is chock full of multicolored pastas galore (a sight in itself), stalls with fruits, vegetables, cheese, nuts (makings for a picnic lunch), and food stalls, where you can sample all kinds of fun food. This afternoon’s guided tour is a great introduction to the city. Marvel at Florence’s massive pink, white and green Duomo, complemented by Giotto’s Campanile. Then discover the church of Santa Croce, where the tombs of Galileo and Michelangelo, as well as the Dante Memorial, are displayed. Your sightseeing tour includes a treat for the whole family—irresistible gelato.
