Passport & visa requirements

In order to enter France, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact the French consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & packing tips

We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please be respectful and avoid showing bare legs or shoulders when visiting churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks when traveling to France. It is always advisable to check with your doctor or health-care provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

Cuisine

For the most casual snack or picnic, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, patés, cured meats, freshbaked bread and fruit. Sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, filled with cheese, ham, fruit or chocolate. Mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from the cafés. On the restaurant scene, the prix fixe option is popular, offering a three- or four-course set menu for a good price.

Transportation & arrival information

Round-trip flights arrive in and depart from Paris. After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, a shuttle service will provide your transfer to your hotel (details will be sent to you prior to your departure).

Electricity

France operates on the European standard 220 volts.

Currency

The euro is the currency you will be using on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in Italy, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to access cash at local banks, as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest informing your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so they don’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

PATRICK!!!!!!

What an amazing experience! My husband traveled with Go Ahead 15 years ago to Paris and had Patrick as is guide and was very happy with him back then. When he learned that we were going to have him on our trip, he was ecstatic! Everything was smooth sailing from our pick up at the airport, to being available every morning for questions, suggestions, etc. Patrick even made a dinner reservation for me, that I was wanting to plan for my husband and my anniversary dinner, near the Eiffel Tower! Such an amazing restaurant and meal, we had! We had a cancellation of a scheduled tour, because there were not enough people signed up. Patrick arranged his own walking tour for us, with tons of history info that we all appreciated! It was probably one of our favorite tours/days we had in Paris! We LOVE Patrick and wish we could have him on future tours that we will be scheduling to other locations! So, in a nutshell, I would rate my experience to Paris alone as amazing and I can't wait to go back!

Hello! Thank you for your fantastic review. First of all, happy belated anniversary! What a special way to celebrate with a dinner near the Eiffel Tower! We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your tour. That’s very neat that your husband had Patrick as a Tour Director 15 years ago. We’re so glad everything was smooth sailing and that you felt well cared for. We’re also pleased to hear that Patrick was able to arrange a walking tour which ended up being a highlight for you. We thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and be sure to let us know when you want to go back to Paris!

Best Tour Director

Patrick is a very knowledgeable Tour Director. He is also respectful, patient, and accommodating. My husband Michael and my niece, Isabel had a great time in Paris. The only regret was that we did not have enough time. We certainly plan to use your company for our future travel.

Hi Grace! Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so happy you enjoyed your tour and your Tour Director. Paris is such a fantastic destination, and we’re so glad we could help you experience it. We agree that time constraints can be limiting, which is why we offer longer tours that provide more time and flexibility for travelers. Next time you’re looking to travel, be sure to give us a call and ask one of our Tour Consultants about our other France itineraries. Thank you again for writing a review of your tour, and we hope to welcome you on another soon!

Unparalleled Care

My husband and I were on a tour in Paris on 11/13/15 when terrorists struck this beautiful city. Our Paris City Stay tour was exemplary, our tour guide Patrick Long was spectacular. But here's where Go Ahead excels beyond our wildest expectations. If you're out of the country, and don't speak the language well, who is there to help you when borders are closed after terrorists attack the city? Go Ahead is, let me tell you. From their domestic emergency management team, to the Go Ahead tour guides in Paris, they all coordinated efforts to get us moved from our Montmartre hotel the following day, join up with another group and got us all out of the city for the day, to spend time in Normandy, which was lovely. Then back to a hotel in close proximity to CDG airport, where we were able to be there early and move through security with no issues on our original flight home. I can't say enough about this company. If you ever had any hesitation in travelling abroad, fear not. Go Ahead knows how to handle any situation, and executes it well. We're definitely travelling with them again.

Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. We really appreciate your generous recognition of our Emergency Services team. As you learned, they care so much about our travelers and go above and beyond to ensure their safety. Despite the tragedy of the attacks, we’re so glad to hear you felt cared for and safe. Thank you again for your valuable feedback, and we can’t wait to see you again on tour!

A Trip to Remember for Our Family

Our family trip to Paris was one of the best vacations that we have ever taken. Usually I go into a trip such as this with expectations and it seems that I am always disappointed. Not this time. Everything was handled from the early stages to the return with ease. Patrick L. was our Tour Director and he was FANTASTIC!!! From greeting us at our hotel, to his walking tours in different areas of Paris, to providing us information, to arranging excursions, we could not have asked for more. He wanted us to have a good time as well as a relaxing time in a city he loves. The excursion guides he arranged for us to have (City Bus Tour and the Palace of Versailles) were very nice and very knowledgeable, especially our guide at Versailles. I'm sorry I cannot recall her name, plus I don't want to get it wrong, but she lead us through an incredible tour of the Palace. Our family will be working and planning another excursion to Europe over the next couple years and we be looking to Go Ahead Tours to get us there.

Paris 2015

To start off with, the planner did an excellent job in seeing that all our needs were taken care of. We required wheelchair assistance on all our flights, and this came through with flying colors. We were picked up at airport on time and taken to our Hotel Ampere in the heart of Paris. I can not say enough about this wonderful hotel. The staff was amazing The hotel itself is perfect in every way. and the beds were the best I have ever slept in, better than my own, which says a lot for a traveler. That first evening we met downstairs and me our tour director Brian. If you ever loose him you are loosing a wonderful representative of your Tour company. He is a delight. Kind, protective, insightful, helpful and an all around wonderful person. He made our trip pure joy. He was always available for the simplest questions to helping us get our return flight home situated. The only negative thing I will say about the whole experience with Go Ahead Tours is the rude tour guide that took us to Versailles. She talked too much and said very little. She also reprimanded my traveling friend and i for talking. We were just so excited about what we were seeing and instead of quietly saying something to us in private, she said it on the open mike for all on the bus to hear. We felt really bad about it, we were embarrassed and it ruined our trip. Maybe part of the problem is that we are both in our 70's with hearing problems and maybe we were talking louder that normal, but that was no excuse for her to embarrass us. Others on the bus told us later that they thought she was terrible to us and I don't think anyone tipped her at the end of the tour.

Good time in Paris

Suzanne was a wonderful tour director. We did not use her as we had a book, maps and itinerary of our own. The first night's dinner was ok, We were not asked what we wanted to eat and the woman who worked at the restaurant was visibly upset when we said we didn't want salmon. Not Suzanne's fault at all. As a matter of fact, she was quite good handling the young lady. The bus tour and dinner cruise was terrific. The hotel was very nice and the breakfasts were simply wonderful. The bathtub was scary because it was very slippery when it got wet so we put a towel in it. All in all great location and very comfortable beds. The staff was really great too.

Excellent tour!

We chose this tour because of the optional excursion to Giverny to visit Monet's Gardens. It is the perfect city tour. Our tour director, Patrick, was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and funny. Patrick lead at least one tour or excursion everyday except Saturday, so you could choose to go with him, or head out on your own. On Monday he took us on an excursion to show us where the ATM was, where to buy Metro tickets, and how to navigate the Metro. After that we were extremely comfortable using the Metro to get us wherever we chose to go. We would strongly recommend choosing the optional 2 day extension because it makes things more relaxed and less hurried. All aspects of this tour, the flight, the hotel, the optional excursions, and especially the tour director completely exceeded all of our expectations. Our hotel was in a nice neighborhood with many restaurants, a grocery store, and ATM. We were a half block from the Metro, making getting around the city so easy.

Thanks Patrick... for Paris!!!

My teaching colleague, Julie, and I recently took the "Paris-The City Experience " tour with Go Ahead Tours. Our itinerary was set for July 11-17. My colleague, had never been to France so this was a whole new experience for her and she just loved it! Everything from the architecture to the history steeped in traditions just amazed her. This was my first tour with Go Ahead tours but my sixth time visiting Paris and I do speak the language. I enjoyed every minute of the time that we were in Paris..our group dinner together to making new friends through our "getting acquainted" introductions. Even the tour bus that pointed out the major sites on one of the first few days was just superb. We were able to get off at a quaint part of the city and enjoy the Parisian cafe with desserts and espresso! But the trip would not have been as fantastic if it had not been for our wonderful tour guide, Patrick. From the moment that the Julie and I and our were introduced to him, he could not do enough to make us all feel welcome and "at home" in this city that he loved! He put his heart and soul into making our experience "over the top"! He went the extra mile to show us many things that Paris had to offer and gave us tips and suggestions on where we might find places to eat and things to do on our free day. I, for one, especially enjoyed his "hands-on" lesson, if you will, to the metro. He took the members of the group who so desired and taught us how to ride on the metro, buying tickets, etc. So very helpful! When our trip was ended, we hated to leave him because he had become our adopted friend. I only wish that I had gotten his email address so that we could continue our correspondence. That being said, these two teachers from Miami completely enjoyed our time with Go Ahead Tours and are at this moment, planning another trip with Go Ahead Tours for 2016! But, props to Patrick, our tour guide! A superb job by far and ultimately, he is surely a well-deserved feather in Go Ahead Tours' cap!!!! Well done!!! :)
