Passport & Visa

In order to enter France, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact the French consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Baggage Allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & Packing Tips

We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please be respectful and avoid showing bare legs or shoulders when visiting churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Currency

The euro is the currency you will be using on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in your destination countries, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We advise that you take a combination of bank/ATM cards and credit cards, as needed. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Cuisine

For the most casual snack or picnic, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, patés, cured meats, freshbaked bread and fruit. Sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, filled with cheese, ham, fruit or chocolate. Mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from the cafés. On the restaurant scene, the prix fixe option is popular, offering a three- or four-course set menu for a good price.

Arrival & Transportation Information Round-trip flights arrive in and depart from Paris. After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, a shuttle service will provide your transfer to your hotel (details will be sent to you prior to your departure).

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Amazing City and Tour Director, and Travel Company!

I purchased Paris: The City Experience on a whim one weekend not knowing what to expect. It was my first time traveling to Europe and going to a country where I do not speak the language. I chose Go Ahead based on their ratings, reviews, and prices. They did not disappoint. They took care of all the transportation details, even when my outgoing flight from Tampa to Dallas was cancelled, rerouted, and sent through Charlotte and London 5 hours later! Paris is a beautiful city full of history, culture, and amazing food. This trip was the perfect blend of guided tours and free time. Patrick was our Tour Director for the week, and there aren't enough words to describe how amazing he was! He was always available for questions, directions, and advice on where to visit/dine. He also coordinated additional walking tours including a tutorial on how to navigate the Paris Metro system. The amount of knowledge regarding French History and culture that both he and Brian (Tour Guide for Bus Tour and Versailles) possess is inspiring. I can't wait for my next adventure with Go Ahead!

Incredible Week in Paris

My week in Paris exceeded all my expectations and I am a very demanding solo senior traveler. The combination of planned activities and free time made it easy to customize the week to exactly what I wanted to do. The tour director Jean Jacques was very helpful. I really wanted to travel to Chartres to see the renovations at the cathedral. He worked out all the arrangements for me to spend the day in Chartres enjoying both the church and the medieval town. The hotel had excellent bus and metro access so getting around Paris was no problem at all. Because Jean Jacques knew everything about Paris, I was able to do all I aspired to get done and more. Thank you Go Ahead!

Best Tour Director Hands Down!

Patrick absolutely made this trip 100% worthwhile!!! He was extremely informative and personable. His sincere and caring attitude for others made me feel at ease in a foreign country. He was readily availble to answer any questions or tackle any concerns I had. In addition, he provided information regarding great local places to visit and to dine. This guy is AMAZING!!!!

Highly recommended! And thank Heaven for Patrick!

This was a wonderful experience from start to finish. I found Go Ahead's website easy to navigate. From the very start, I had no problem understanding what was included and what the final price would be. (This is very different from other travel websites where you don't know what you're getting or how much it will be until you're really far into the process of booking your tour.) The Go Ahead representatives in Boston understand the term "customer service" and they do a fantastic job delivering it. They fielded a few calls from me and they were always polite, friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and thorough. Flights were good and our ground transportation was reliable. There was a slight delay in the pick up due to some traffic problems (to be expected) but the ladies who met us at the airport were very friendly and kept us entertained. I found the Parisians to be very friendly and accommodating. With a few simple phrases like Bonjour, parlez vous anglais?, s'il vous plait and merci you're making a lot of headway with international relations. When you don't understand them or they don't understand you ... take a moment to smile, be friendly and work it out. You'll be fine. Our tour director, Patrick, can't be beat! He was fun-loving, enthusiastic and endlessly helpful. He was the one who reminded us to try out the little French we knew and we'd see how accommodating people would be. And was he ever right! Actually, from the moment we arrived, I could tell this was going to be a good experience with Patrick. He had devised a self-guided stroll through the hotel's neighborhood (complete with simple directions and a map). So even BEFORE our initial group meeting and the welcome dinner that 1st night we had seen a lot of great stuff. At our meeting that first night, Patrick also provided us with a number of other useful sheets (key metro stops included among other great resources). Hey, Patrick, we used those sheets all week long! So helpful! From his practical, hands-on tutorial on how to use the Metro ... to his advice on how to save money, how to navigate the city, avoid pickpockets and useful French phrases (carafe d'eau!) ... to his extremely interesting (and free!) tours of Montmartre and Marais ... Patrick was wonderful and knowledgeable about both practical matters and local history. Heck, he even gave us his phone number and it came in handy when I lost my credit card one night and on another occasion when we needed help finding a restaurant. I can't say enough good things about Patrick. Props to him for his recommendations on local "must see" tour destinations (like Sainte-Chappelle) and for his friendliness. We were sorry to say goodbye at the week's end. I could say more in favor of Patrick but I think you get the idea. Patrick also reserved our tickets for a Moulin Rouge performance, so that made things easy. The boat ride up and down the Seine was wonderful. Glad we sat with Patrick on that ride. He had a lot of info to share for those that were interested ... and we certainly were! We were sorry that the group trip to the Louvre was canned (due to changes in how the Louvre takes groups) ... but once again Patrick saved the day by helping folks get tickets and telling us all the best days to go. We were also sorry that two optional tours were canned due to low enrollment, but that's life! We found plenty to do in Paris so it was fine. Better than fine. Like I said, Patrick was there with endless resources! Tour guide Brian is another wonderful asset. He conducted the included bus tour of the city on day 2 and the tour of Versailles. I learned a lot from him and was so happy to meet him. Our hotel was the Mercure Montmartre on the Right Bank. We thoroughly enjoyed nearby and quaint Montmartre with all of its shops and great restaurants, as well as the Sacre Coeur Bascillica and Saint Pierre ... and of course the Moulin Rouge! The hotel was clean and attractive. The front desk staff spoke English and were very helpful with whatever we needed. The included breakfast every morning was delicious. In fact, in our 7 days in Paris (extended tour) we did not have one single bad meal. I'd say that's got to be some kind of record but you know what? I think great food is just easy to find in Paris. The restaurants that Go Ahead selected for the Welcome Dinner and the Thursday night farewell dinner were great ... I guess I liked the Welcome Dinner restaurant better if I had to pick one over the other. Shopping is great, too. You don't have to look very hard to find plenty of "gems" among the typical tourist trap souvenir shops. And, hey, even those tourist trap souvenir shops have some decent/cute items for a few Euros. I just looked for "Made in France" or "Made in Europe" and I found some great-smelling inexpensive soaps and perfumes to take home for gifts. A cute artists shops in Montmartre had hand-crafted ceramics, etc. We went to Galeries Lafayette for purses/wallets and chocolates made by Paris brands. There were fine stores in the Marais for fashion if that's your thing. Remember, $800 American is the current upper limit for customs. So remember to convert the amount in Euros to the amount in American Dollars before you buy anything too expensive! Patrick called my sister in law and me ambitious ... On our own we went to a show at the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre Cemetery, Sacre-Coeur Bascillica, the 1100's church next door (Saint Pierre?), Sainte-Chappelle, Notre-Dame and the museum housing the religious relics, Archeological crypt of Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Musee du Louvre, the Catacombs of Paris, a flea market that Patrick recommended, Hotel des Invalides and Napoleon's tomb, Rodin's museum, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Arc De Triomphe, a restaurant on the Champs-Élysées, Palais Garnier (Opera House), Les Deux Magots, Shakespeare and Co. Bookstore and the Musée de l'érotisme de Paris (it's an erotic museum -- and we figured, what the hell, we'll do it). In my opinion, we only missed visiting the Conciergerie (mixed reviews) and seeing a close up of the Obelisk (but we drove past it several times). If you want to do ALL of that (plus the included bus tour, the optional Versailles tour, the optional Seine river cruise and Patrick's free walking tours of Montmartre and the Marais/Jewish area) I'd totally recommend booking the extended version of the tour, which includes 2 extra days. Notes: If you have money to spare, taxis are pretty easy to find or the hotel can even get one for you. Minimum fare right now is 7 Euro. If you want to save money, be prepared go use the Metro (Patrick provides a lesson) and for some walking. (My sister in law's pedometer said she averaged 11,100 steps every day.) Also, note that there are a lot of stairs -- especially if you're using the Metro -- and the toilets in restaurants are usually in the basement which is typically accessible by stairs. The Catacombs have a lot of steps (130 down and 83 back up), too. The Mercure Montmartre hotel and some tour sites (including the Arc De Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower) DO have elevators. You've got to know to look for the Arc De Trimophe's elevator. (They don't advertise it.) And even after you find that elevator there are another 40 steps to climb to get to the top. Long story a little bit shorter ... I recommend this tour and of course Patrick and Brian ... I recommend it big time. If you've got any aches and pains when it comes to walking or taking stairs, then plan to take some extra money for taxi fare and avoid the Catacombs for sure. (If you have NO aches and pains, the Catacombs were worthwhile!) Another advantage -- when you're dining out, tax and 15% gratuity is already figured into the bill! So no math at the restaurants. Throw down a Euro if you want to tip extra for great service.

Worst Tour Ever

I have travelled all over the world and have never experienced such a poor excuse for a tour. We arranged for a 5 day tour of Paris and all we got was a 3 hour Highlight tour of Paris on a Monday which was good, but We had scheduled The Louve which was cancelled(no replacement offered).......We wanted to go to Versaiile but we could not get on, we wanted to go to Provins but we were told there was not enough people. So I payed for a 5 day tour and only got a 3 hour tour on Monday!(THATS IT!!! ONE DAY!!!) We hired another tour company while we were there and got our moneys worth. I would never book another tour with this organization again!!...What a big disappointment and rip off......These guys need to be reported!!...Beware!!!

Awesome Trip!!!

This was my first time in Paris, and I had so much fun with exploring the city with my tour group members. Paris is a lovely city to explore during the Christmas Holidays. The decorations and Christmas Markets were one of my favorite parts of my tour. The restaurant selections within the city were also a plus in regards to the tour. Our tour guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable. He was very informative and helped me a great deal with directions, and I quickly realized how easy it was to get around the city by either walking or using the public transportation system. Overall, I would recommend the Paris City Stay Tour to my family and friends.

More than I expected!

We are so glad we booked our tour with Go Ahead, without it we would have been lost! Our tour director was just awesome! He was very friendly and helpful. If we wanted to do something on our own, he made sure to give detailed instructions and suggestions. Being our first time in Europe it helped a lot to have some minimal training, and our tour director definitely delivered. Hotel was adequate, but not excellent, but at the end of the day, all we needed was a place to store our stuff and to rest and it met our needs. The restaurants used on the welcoming dinner and the optional dinner were not that great, at least not for me, primarily because of the food, I ended up only eating about half of my meal on both occasions, but at least the staff was very friendly. Couple other things we believe should have been clarified, were about the tips....we were unaware that we had to tip the drivers and local guide as we went, we thought that we tipped at the end of the tour, so they didn't get a tip from us, and that is just awful! A little more clarification on that would have been great. Also, when we were dropped off at the airport, we were at the wrong terminal, we made it to the right terminal eventually, but it was a bit nerve wracking for a moment. Overall....we think the tour was great and helpful and will definitely do it again for another city or country we haven't been to. A lot of the people that we met at the tour have used Go Ahead before numerous times and they all said that they loved using the service, so that made us feel better. Camila

Best Tour Director!!!!!

Paris was absolutely wonderful!!! Patrick, our tour director, was magnificent!!! He is friendly, personable, knowledgable, and an overall great guy!!! He is the reason I would take this tour again and tell my friends to take this tour!! The only 'bad' experience was the dinner at Le Mesturet on the excursion 'An Evening in Paris'. I must say that was the worst meal we had while in Paris. The optional excursions were fabulous!!! The hotel was location was close to the metro and was adequate for the time we were in the room. The staff was friendly. Til we meet again Paris......

Best Tour Director!

Patrick the tour director was absolutely amazing! He is very knowledgeable, always available for helping, and all around great guy! He is the reason I would recommend this tour to friends and family and take this tour myself again! The optional excursions were all amazing. Paris is a beautiful and amazing city! The restaurant "Le Mesturet" chosen for dinner the night of the optional "Evening in Paris" was horrible. By far the worst meal offered on the entire tour! Everything else was amazing. All bus drivers and tour guides were also amazing. Very knowledgable and gave a lot of very good and useful info about Paris. This is the tour to take with Patrick as the tour director. Again he is amazing! Until we meet again Paris!!!
