Passport & visa requirements

This itinerary includes the following countries: France, Italy, Slovenia, Austria (and the Czech Republic on the extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Airport & departure taxes

All airport and departure taxes for this tour are included in the total trip cost printed on your invoice.

Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Baggage handling

Please note that porter service cannot be guaranteed on certain portions of this tour and all travelers should be prepared to handle his or her own baggage as needed.

Clothing & packing tips

To ensure you’re comfortable while out exploring, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight sports jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please remember that it’s preferable to avoid showing bare legs or shoulders during visits to churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks associated with traveling on this tour. However, it’s always advisable to check with your healthcare provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

Cuisine

Throughout France, you’ll find endless opportunities to sample wonderful food at every price range. For a casual snack or picnic, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés, cured meats, fruit and fresh-baked bread. Sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crêpes, filled with cheese, ham, fruit or chocolate. Flaky pastries and hot coffee beckon from the cafes. For restaurants, the prix fixe option is popular, offering a three- or four-course set menu for a good price.

Most staples of the Italian diet have already become favorites in America, but on your tour, try those less familiar pasta sauces and the vast range of cured hams, cheeses, rustic breads and desserts available. Venice and the surrounding region is known for its hearty risotto and creamy polenta, each often accented with cured meat and savory mushrooms.

Austria is known for its sweets (including Sachertorte, Strudel, Linzer Torte and Kaiserschmarrn) and for very meat-centric meals. Wiener Schnitzel is of course the most well-known dish. Pork is the meat of choice in Austria, usually served with the famous Semmelknödel dumplings.

Czech food is typically large portions of veal, beef and potato dishes. Some of the world’s finest beers are produced in the Czech Republic, including the original Budweiser and Pilsner.

Transportation

Round-trip flights arrive in Paris and depart from Vienna (or Prague on the extension). After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, a shuttle service will provide your transfer to your hotel (details will be sent to you prior to your departure). Included transportation on this tour is primarily by private motor coach, with a flight provided between Paris and Venice. In your free time, you may wish to explore the major cities by public transportation.

Paris’ massive Métro is world-class, easy to navigate and efficient. Make sure to take time and look for the best deal on travel passes. Ask your Tour Director which pass might work best. In Venice, each section of the city is connected by water bus (least expensive), water taxi or gondola. You can purchase discounted bulk passes from vendors or purchase single tickets at each dock. Vienna has a top-notch transportation system—one of the best in Europe. You can purchase tickets in singles or in bulk for S-bahn (above ground), U-bahn (underground), tram and bus lines. The waiting time for trains and subways is usually no more than five to 10 minutes. Prague is best explored on foot, but if you need to access the suburbs or transport to a hotel, trams and local buses are readily available.

Electricity

Each destination operates on the European standard 220 volts.

Time zones

France, Italy, Slovenia, Austria and the Czech Republic are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Paris, Venice, Ljubljana, Vienna and Prague.

Currency

The euro is the currency you’ll be using on your tour (and the Czech crown on the extension). Better rates of exchange are usually available in France and Italy, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest informing your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so they don’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalency of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalency of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Nicola, Tour Genius

Our tour director Nicola was truly amazing. He is so personable and really cared about every person's needs and interests on the tour. He was so knowledgeable about each place we visited and gave great recommendations of what to do in our free time. I would go on any tour that he leads because he is such a knowledgeable and friendly person! The tour itself was good. I recommend the river cruise in Paris as an optional excursion, that was very cool. I was pleasantly surprised by Ljublijana. That was a really neat city and the walking tour was excellent. I also recommend the optional excursion in Vienna- Dinner and the Opera. I really enjoyed that night. This tour was the perfect pace, we had a great mix of free time and guided sight seeing. I recommend doing Prague. I have been to Prague before with a group and really enjoyed it. This time, I added the optional excursion of the Jewish walking tour and I would not recommend it. Very slow paced and I really did not learn anything interesting. I wish I would have had more free time in the city rather than going on the Jewish Walking Tour. Overall, an excellent tour.

Hi Kristin! It’s wonderful to know that your Tour Director showed so much care and concern for your group throughout tour. It sounds like his knowledge and helpful tips really enhanced your experience, and we’re glad to hear it. We’re glad you would recommend the river cruise in Paris, as we agree that this is a unique opportunity. We’re pleased to hear that you feel the itinerary was paced well, providing enough free time for independent exploration. We regret to hear that you didn’t enjoy the walking tour of Prague’s Jewish quarter. We will be sure to pass your feedback along to our Product Development team for evaluation. Thank you for your review, and we look forward to welcoming you on tour again!

THE Best trip ever!

I returned from my trip to Paris, Venice & Vienna recently, and I wished that I could go back and do it all again. This trip was my BEST trip ever with GoAhead. The tours in Paris were amazing and there was so much to do. The best part was the night of the Seine river cruise. There is nothing like seeing Paris at night when everything is lit up. Venice was everything I expected and more. Our group stayed on the Island of Murano, excellent place to be. The island is quiet and oh so quaint. The sights of Venice are only a boat ride away, but I would have been happy to stay on the island! The rest of the trip was by bus, and we saw a lot of the countryside. It was a nice change of pace. Vienna is delightful and we were treated to an evening of opera and dinner. So exciting! I opted for the extension of Prague and was so glad that I did. Prague is a beautiful city and there is so much to do. All in all, I must say that this trip was very well planned. And it helped that we had one of the best tour guides that works for GoAhead, Nikola V. He absolutely made this trip enjoyable. Nikola knew all of the facts about each city and was so enthusiastic. He was a joy to be with and bent over backwards to make sure that everyone had a good time. I would love to travel with Nikola again! And I cannot express how interesting this trip was!

Hi Karolyn! Thank you for your review. We know the feeling of wanting to do a trip over again. That's how you know it was good! We're so pleased to learn that this one stands out as your best with Go Ahead. We agree that the Seine River cruise is spectacular, and we're so glad you were able to experience it. We're also pleased you opted to include the extension to Prague. Prague is an incredible destination with so much to offer. Thank you for your feedback regarding your Tour Director. We will be sure to pass it along to his supervisor! We hope to welcome you on tour again soon.

Excellent Tour Director

Overall no complaints. Hotels too far away from center of important cities like in Paris. Excellent hotel and breakfast. Same in Prague. Food (dinners) included in tour really bad, except the one in Paris. Excellent location for Venice hotel. Awesome to include Slovakia!!!!

Hi Cristina! Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad that overall you enjoyed your tour and have no complaints. We regret to learn of your dissatisfaction with your hotel in Paris as well as the included dinners. Regarding hotels, we carefully select our hotels with quality, value, and location in mind. The city of Paris is officially divided into 20 districts and tourist attractions are not all concentrated directly in the center of the city, but instead spread out among many of the districts. Therefore, a central location in Paris is relative to what you’re looking to see and do. Regarding dinners, our Operations team does their best to accommodate different palates, and we frequently receive positive feedback on food for this tour. That said, we regret that your tastes were not met and will be sure to communicate this back to our team. Again, we thank you for your valuable feedback and we look forward to welcoming you on your next tour later this year!
