Passport & visa requirements

In order to enter France and Spain, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact the French and Spanish consulates for your specific entry requirements.

Airport & departure taxes

All airport and departure taxes are included in the total trip cost printed on your invoice.

Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Baggage handling

Please note that porter service cannot be guaranteed on certain portions of this tour and all travelers should be prepared to handle his or her own baggage as needed.

Clothing & packing tips

To ensure you’re comfortable while out exploring, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight sports jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please remember that it’s preferable to avoid showing bare legs or shoulders during visits to churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks when traveling to France and Spain. It’s always advisable to check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

Cuisine

One of the most enjoyable aspects of traveling is the delightful variety of local cuisine. Throughout France, you’ll find endless opportunities to sample wonderful food at every price range. For the most casual snack or picnic, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, patés, cured meats, fruit and fresh-baked bread. Sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crêpes, filled with cheese, ham, fruit or chocolate. Mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from the cafes. On the restaurant scene, the prix fixe option is popular.

In Spain, breakfast is very light, usually consisting of only rolls and coffee. Lunch is traditionally a three-course meal, which can take much of the afternoon to consume. The traditional dish is known as paella and is made from chicken, meat, vegetables, seafood and saffron rice. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Tapas, a series of small samples of various appetizers, is an evening staple at Spanish bars and cafes.

Transportation

Round-trip flights arrive in Paris and depart from Barcelona (or Madrid on extension). After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, a shuttle service will provide your transfer to your hotel (details will be sent to you prior to your departure). Included transportation on this tour is primarily by private motor coach, with a flight from Paris to Barcelona and a high-speed train to Madrid on the tour extension. In your free time, you may wish to explore the main cities by public transportation. Paris’ massive Métro is world-class, easy to navigate and efficient. Make sure to take time and look for the best deal on travel passes. Ask your Tour Director which pass might work best.

For the novice traveler, navigating Barcelona can be slightly challenging. However, most of the main attractions and tourist hangouts are near the area known as Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter. Use Las Ramblas as a base—it runs all the way down to the Columbus Monument and the harbor. For access to the other attractions and neighborhoods of Barcelona, use the excellent metro system.

Electricity

France and Spain operate on the European standard 220 volts.

Time zones

France and Spain are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). When it is noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Paris.

Currency

The euro is the currency you will use on tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in the countries you’ll be visiting, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the Cirrus and Plus networks, but make sure to check with your bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalency of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalency of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

A Great Starter Trip

This was my first trip to Europe and I enjoyed it. Traveling with Go Ahead was very smooth and organized. The accommodations in Paris were wonderful but I'd suggest they no longer use the hotel in Spain as one of their vendors as it was pretty bad and put a slight damper on the trip. Our tour director was great! Very knowledgeable. All and all, I'd use their services again for my traveling purposes.

Hello! We are so glad that you enjoyed your first trip to Europe and that you feel it went smoothly. We also appreciate your feedback on your accommodations and will be sure to share it with our Operations team, as we regularly use customer feedback to evolve our tours. It’s great to hear you felt your Tour Direct was knowledgeable and helpful. We are proud to work with such professional and passionate people! Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on another tour.

Great tour, but

Paris was wonderful. Transportation from the airport was good. The hotel was excellent. The breakfast at the hotel was wonderful. The food everywhere else was bland, except a restaurant we found on our own Leon, De Bruxelles. The guided tour was good. We should have been warned about the Tour de France. We should have been told to stay close to the hotel or plan to start back by noon. We almost missed an outing because it took us 3 1/2 hour to get back to the hotel. It should have been a 15 minute taxi ride. I thought the Dinner River Cruise was actually a cruise where we ate on the boat. Not two separate events. Also we should have been warned about no public bathrooms. We spent a lot of money on wine to go to the bathroom. LOL The Barcelona hotel was just a room, but the location was good. We could have used another day in Barcelona. It felt very rushed. The best food we had on the trip was at the Flamingo Dance outing. The food was excellent. Also the restaurant where we had our farewell dinner was awesome. The food was so good. My only concern was with Emil who did a wonderful job most of the time. However when the bus from the airport dropped us off we were several blocks from the hotel. My husband is 77 and does not walk very fast. At one point the group had left us and we had no idea where they were and were actually going in the wrong direction. Emil needed to keep track of his group especially those bringing up the rear. It was very crowded in Barcelona and it was easy to get turned around. Also he had our luggage with all of our hotel information in it so we had no idea which hotel we were staying at. Thank goodness some other people in the group realized we weren't with them and came and found us. We might still be in Barcelona today if they hadn't. Also tried to upload a picture but with no success.

Hi Vivan! We couldn’t agree more that Paris is wonderful, and we’re so glad you enjoyed your time there. We appreciate your feedback on the various components of the tour, such as the hotels and the food. We regret that you were not aware of the traffic due to the Tour de France and will be sure to mention this to your Tour Director. Despite the traffic, we’re glad that you didn’t miss anything. Regarding Barcelona, we appreciate you letting us know that you would have liked more time to explore the city. It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the Flamingo Dinner Show, as this optional is generally very well-liked. We’re glad that overall your Tour Director did a great job. However, we regret to hear that you were briefly separated from your group. One of the challenges of group travel is that the preferred pace varies from one traveler to the next. We appreciate you letting us know, and we will be sure to share your feedback with your Tour Director. Thank you for sharing your experience, and we hope to welcome you on tour again.

Paris and Barcelona

We had traveled with Go Ahead Tours before and the experience was great. This time I wanted my kids to have the same experience with the group and enjoy the city of lights. The hotels were average and also the last dinner in Paris that said that it was included we did not have it with the group. We always enjoyed the local tour guides. They were excellent ( Alberto in Barcelona was great) and our main tour guide Pilar was excellent. We really enjoy Barcelona and we will plan to go back.

Hi Maria! We’re so glad you had yet another great experience on tour with us. It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed your Tour Director and local guides. We’re also happy to hear that you’re planning to return to Barcelona. We regret to learn, however, that the hotels did not meet your expectations, and we will be sure to share this with our Operations team. In terms of dinner in Paris, there is only one dinner included in Paris and that was on the second day of the tour. The meals that are included are outlined the itinerary. If you have questions or are unclear on meal inclusions, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-597-0350. We'd be happy to speak with you about it. Thank you for your review, and let us know when you’re ready to go back to Barcelona!

Best Trip

Just got back from my Go Ahead Tour of Paris and Barcelona. It was fabulous and our tour director Oda was great. Our hotel accommodations in Paris were comfortable, close to the Metro but out of the city center. Our hotel in Barcelona was very nice, comfortable and within walking distance of LaRamblas. Enjoyed all the extra tours that were offered. Looking forward to our next trip with Go Ahead Tours!
