Passport & visa requirements

In order to enter the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark (as well as Sweden on the tour extension), U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the reentry date. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Airport & departure taxes

All airport and departure taxes are included in the total trip cost printed on your invoice.

Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Baggage Handling

Please note that porter service cannot be guaranteed on certain portions of this tour and all travelers should be prepared to handle his or her own baggage as needed.

Clothing & packing tips

To ensure you’re comfortable while out exploring, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight sports jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please remember that it’s preferable to avoid showing bare legs or shoulders during visits to churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks associated with traveling to your destinations. Be sure to check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

Cuisine

For traditional British fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal. Fish and chips, stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie and Cumberland sausages are specialties. London also boasts an array of international restaurants, including Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek and West African cuisine.  In Belgium, you won’t want to miss indulging in favorites like french fries,  handmade chocolate, locally brewed Abbey-style beer and, of course, Belgian waffles. Dutch staples like beef, chicken and fish are prepared in a simple fashion, and rich soups and stews are also very popular. Snack food might be less familiar, where the emphasis is on fish. You might try maatje, raw green herrings served with onions.

German specialties include rich dumpling stews and sauerkraut cabbage, tasty thick sausages and smoked cheeses, dark breads and chocolate cakes. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.

Denmark produces fabulous cheeses and local specialties like roast pork served with red cabbage. Sweden boasts specialties like salmon, shellfish and pickled herring, as well as their iconic Swedish meatballs with herbed potatoes.

Transportation

Round-trip flights arrive in London and depart from Copenhagen (or Stockholm on the tour extension). Included transportation is primarily by private motor coach. In addition, you will transfer from London to Brussels by train through the Channel Tunnel and take a ferry between Germany and Denmark. On the tour extension, you will fly between Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Electricity

The United Kingdom uses 240 volts. All other destinations operate on the European standard 220 volts.

Time zones

The United Kingdom uses Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is five hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden are all one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm in London, and 6pm in Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Copenhagen.

Currency

You will use the euro in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as the British pound and Danish krone. (and the Swedish krona on the tour extension). Better rates of exchange are usually available in your destination countries, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take a combination of bank/debit cards and credit cards. We suggest informing your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so they don’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalency of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalency of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Tulips in Holland

This was my fourth tour and my third with Go Ahead. From this tour, I learned that I should have done much more research. A friend chose this tour and I went along. Unfortunately, I also brought along a friend on her first tour. I should have asked questions about the travel time. For me, this tour included too much time on the bus and other means of transportation. My biggest disappointment was not going to Keukenhof to see the tulips. It was the primary reason for going to northern Europe in April, when I knew the weather could be quite cold. But April and May are the primary months for the tulips so we started the tour on April 21. By the time we realized we were not going to see the tulips, we were leaving Amsterdam. Skipping Antwerp would have given us plenty of time to visit Keukenhof. We would absolutely have gone on our own if we had known and I believe our entire group would agree. By the time I asked, I was told “it wasn’t on the itinerary”. That is true but I wonder. If someone from Europe were to visit New York, would it occur to them to ask if they were going to see the Statue of Liberty? Lesson learned. On a positive note, we enjoyed London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Stockholm, which was an extension, turned out to be the highlight of our tour. One more night in Amsterdam would have made up for the tedium of one night in Antwerp. In the future, I will ensure there are no “one night” layovers in the tour. In hindsight, another mistake was booking all the excursions. Doing two all day tours left very little time in London. The dinner cruises in Amsterdam and Hamburg are too similar to do both. I do not recommend the Hamburg cruise. I would save river cruises for Copenhagen and Stockholm, which are quite spectacular. Our tour director, Tom, was personable and knowledgeable and really cared about his group. He did his absolute best to make an ill-planned tour into something cohesive. I would consider doing another Go Ahead Tour because my experiences with the Walking Tour of Amalfi and the Jewels of Alpine Europe were excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed both tours and highly recommend them.

Dear Ann, We regret to hear that your expectations were not met with this tour. This itinerary covers a handful of cities to capture the major cultures of Northern Europe. It covers quite a bit of ground leaving less time for side stops. We do offer other itineraries which go to Keukenhof for those who are specifically interested. Despite this, we are glad you enjoyed London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. They certainly are beautiful destinations! We regret that you feel you didn’t have enough down time in London and will be sure to share this feedback with our team internally. It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed your previous Go Ahead tours and that you would recommend us. We certainly take your feedback very seriously and will be using it to evaluate this tour in the future. Thank you for reviewing your experience, and we hope to welcome you on tour again!

could have been great

This tour could have been wonderful. We had a small group and mostly great weather. There were 2 areas that need improvement before I would recommend this - the transportation and the tour guide. Transportation was a problem the minute we landed in London. Information had not been clearly shared to either the traveler or the transportation group. We wandered around the airport before we found a late-arriving driver who didn't have our names right. Bus transportation for the rest of the trip was hit and miss. Different buses (some horrible), different drivers, etc. Terrible situation at the ferry crossing - rather than having our bus go with us with all our luggage, we had to carry our own bags up and down stairs to get to the ferry and then to the 'bus' on the other side. I say 'bus' because it was a dark and small van that barely fit the travelers. GoAhead should be able to solve these problems. Then our guide - a 26 year old who knew minimal about most of the places we were visiting - or at least provided minimal information. We have had such wonderful guides on other trips. They provided lots of information about where we were going, what we should do when we get there, helping us find restaurants or stores. I think our guide wanted to get rid of us so he could watch rugby and soccer. Again GoAhead should be able to fix this. This is not an inexpensive tour and I expected more...

Dear Marjorie, Thank you for traveling with Go Ahead, and for taking the time to review your recent experience with us. As you know, we ask all of our travelers to fill out evaluations at the end of their tours and we use these evaluations to monitor each tour’s performance throughout the year. We understand that travel days can be tiring and we consistently look for ways to make these days as seamless as possible. Your Tour Director is a strong member of our team of expert professionals all over the world, and we will take his ratings into consideration along with your comments as we prepare for future tours. Thank you very much for providing your thoughtful insight into this new and exciting tour. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you onto another Go Ahead tour in the future.

Sorry, but I cannot recommend this tour.

This was my 10th Go Ahead tour, and I should have known better. Although the hotels and the provided meals were excellent, and the cities visited were spectacular and well worth seeing, there was just too much wasted time traveling between cities. London to Antwerp got us into Antwerp late in the afternoon and we did get to spend a few hours exploring the heart of the city. Likewise when we traveled from Antwerp to Amsterdam. But the majority of those 2 days were spent traveling. After that it went off the rails. We got into Hamburg with no time to do anything but go to dinner. And a major disappointment was that we did not stop in Bremen (as advertised) along the way. Apparently, EU rules would have required the bus driver to take a mandated break before getting to Bremen, and if we had stopped in Bremen after his break we would have gotten into Hamburg even later. Therefore, some little hick town was substituted for Bremen. Although we had time to grab a quick lunch, there was nothing worth seeing, at least compared to Bremen. The day spent traveling from Hamburg to Copenhagen was the worst day I have ever spent on a Go Ahead tour. It may not have been so bad if we had taken the train from Hamburg to Copenhagen. We stopped for a half hour in Lubeck (just enough time to buy some sandwiches for the ferry ride to Copenhagen), and when we got to the ferry terminal we had to schlep our luggage off the bus, into the ferry terminal, up to the boarding area, and onto the ferry. When we got to Denmark, we had to lug the bags off the boat, across the terminal, down the stairs to outside, across some railroad tracks and to the waiting - not a bus - a 14 person van for the 13 of us. The bags went into a horse trailer towed behind the vehicle. Stuffed into the van it took us 90 minutes to get to the hotel. Just enough time to spend the evening on our own in Copenhagen. All of the tedious travel we experienced on this tour might have been made interesting if our tour guide had any knowledge of the history and geography of the areas we were plodding through. But either he did not know any or the countryside just did not have anything interesting to offer. So unlike most other Go Ahead tours I have been on, the time was spent just staring out the bus windows at the farmland. I don't want to be too hard on the tour director because he got us where we needed to be, and he was personable and always willing to answer any questions. But he just did not have much to share about the countries we visited. Wrapping up - despite the logistical problems I enjoyed the time spent in the destination cities. And despite the problems, I still highly recommend Go Ahead and look forward to my next tour with them.

Dear Lou, Welcome home, and thank you for providing your important first-hand insight into the operation of this tour. We are so pleased to learn that you enjoyed the meals and accommodations, and that the sights seen were worthwhile. This is one of our favorite new itineraries, and we are monitoring its performance very closely to ensure that our travelers love it as much as we do. We aim to have a wide and varied portfolio of tours to offer travelers with a range of interests, and this tour certainly accomplishes a great deal. We have some tours that move around very little and spend a lot of time in one city, and other itineraries that are quite active and see many cities in the same amount of time. We have shared your feedback about transfer days with our Product Development team who creates and manages our itineraries. We are always evaluating our tours and looking for areas in which changes made could improve the on-tour experience, and will keep your comments in mind when considering this tour moving forward. While your Tour Director is one who receives consistently high ratings, we have shared your suggestions with his supervisor, and will be sure that his performance does not dip. We thank you again for your thoughtful and constructive comments, and we look forward to welcoming you onto your next Go Ahead tour!

What an Excellent Trip and Adventure!

This was my first trip with Go Ahead Tours and my first trip as a solo traveler. I must share Go Ahead did not disappoint. I chose this trip in particular to visit cities I had not had the opportunity to visit during my last trip to these countries. Let’s start with the following: 1) The Tour Director I was truly amazed at the knowledge and expertise of our tour director, Derek Kehl. He was an exceptional tour director and shared so much history of the cities and sites visited. In addition, he was always quick to offer helpful tips regarding local foods/drinks and navigating through the city. He was very knowledgeable, very friendly and I hope to have him on my next trip with Go Ahead. 2) The Group Size The online site and catalogue indicated a group of no more than 35. I was surprised yet pleased to have a much smaller and intimate group of 17. The group was a mix of travel veterans, newbies, and students. The dynamic was incredible because in the short amount of time (10 days) we learned so much about each other. Whether it be about our personal lives or professions, travel preferences and wish lists, and so much more one can say we truly found new family and friends during this trip. 3) Local Guides Each of the local guides were all exceptional and shared not just the history of the city/country, but daily routines and customs of the locals. I can’t help but share that my favorite of all throughout the trip was Stuart, our local guide from London. He really made the tour a valuable learning experience and at the same time entertaining! 4) Drivers / Bus - Coach What can I say about our drivers, but a big THANK YOU to them! Without their patience and calm demeanor we wouldn’t have been able to travel city to city safely. Plus, a pink EF bus never hurt especially around this girly girl. It was so easy to spot when headed back from a guided tour or self guided tour at the time allotted. 5) The Cities As mentioned above, I’ve previously visited these countries before. I simply missed the opportunity to visit and learn more about Antwerp, Hamburg and Lubeck. I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to return to Europe and to discover so much more on history, culture and food during this trip especially from my Tour Director, Derek. 6) The Food Breakfast was available each day and although I opted to sleep in a little extra towards the latter part of the trip, I can’t complain. Each city/country offered so many breakfast choices it was hard to say no to carbs and pastries. It was a must to try on my end! As for the dinner options included in our package, the selections were great; however, I would have loved to have local dishes incorporated into our trip. We were given the option to try to local dishes during our free time, but for those visiting the countries for the first time it would have been great to mix history with cuisine. I’m simply making a suggestion for future tours and planning. I understand there is a separate tour for food and tasting in these areas, but it’s worth a try ? 7) Hotel Accommodations I’m quite surprised the hotels were exceptional! I’ve been on previous tours and have not been so lucky in the hotel accommodations department. I can truly share that this is a big plus for me and just one of the factors that will have me coming back to Go Ahead for future travel. It’s as if the company knew the schedule could more or less be hectic and what better way to comfort the traveler but in a space that they can call their own with no issues/concerns. 8) Option Tours/Excursions and Free Time This is another plus for Go Ahead. I really liked how Go Ahead offered a good balance of optional tours and free time. I wanted to personally experience the “new” cities on my trip and opted to join each excursion. However, there was plenty of free time for me to explore the city at my pace whether it be eating, shopping or taking in the scenery and the historical landmarks. The only excursion I could have done without is the cruise in Hamburg. Not only was it the tour in German, but I felt that the ride was long and it dragged that by the time we got to the landmark it was too dark to see anything. Other than this excursion, all other optional tours were great! 9) Go Ahead Online Booking and Personnel I’m very happy to have found Go Ahead for my trip and you can say I’m one happy traveler! My experience with this trip was remarkable and I did not feel as though I was being rushed or overwhelmed with information/history. Rose Chau is the first Go Ahead representative I spoke to and she was just amazing! She addressed any and all questions I had prior to booking and offered to email with me directly throughout the process to ensure my travel arrangements and request were met. I also loved how I was able to view my profile online and make the necessary adjustments to travel or payment details, as needed. It was also a pleasure meeting and getting to know an expert Tour Director who has been with the company for 20+ years. His knowledge of the countries/cities was truly remarkable. How can he anything but remarkable especially since he speaks 5 languages and is a world traveler/explorer himself. Lastly, on our trip we had the pleasure of meeting and being accompanied by two Go Ahead employees (Jamie and Arlena). It was a pleasure meeting and getting to know to experience this tour with dedicated employees who strongly encouraged our feedback. I can’t wait to plan my next trip with this company and may have to slow it down a bit on my wish list. Either that or simply get back to the grind so I can book the next trip sooner ? just know I’ll be back for more!!!

A series of pleasant surprises

This tour yielded a series of pleasant surprises: 1.) a small tour group of 17 - I was inspired by the older generation's wisdom and positive energy while invigorated by the younger generation's zest and smarts. 2.) Tour Director - Derek exceeded my expectations. 3.) Driver - Thomas accomplished his mission to bring joy to his passengers. 4.) Traffic - the worst traffic ever can still be a tolerable, fairly positive experience if in the company of this tour group, tour director and driver. 5.) Antwerp, Bremen, Lubeck - these less-known destinations contain hidden gems. 6.) Belgium, Germany, Denmark - dark chocolate never tasted so good! 7.) Ferry - eating and shopping made the 45-minute ride seem a lot shorter. 8.) Delta/Air France - it wasn't the preferred non-stop flight, but all was good; all went well. 9.) Pink - the pink EF bus was easy to find.

What an Adventure!

This was my first time to Europe, and I was traveling solo. While I was incredibly excited for the trip, I was also a nervous for obvious reasons. Here's my honest feedback on various components of the trip: 1) GoAhead's Service - I was extremely impressed. The logistics were seamlessly taken care of throughout the trip so that all I had to do was show up and enjoy myself. Every question I asked prior and during the trip was answered thoroughly and from people who were clearly passionate about making sure their travelers had everything they needed to have a wonderful trip. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every interaction I had from start to finish with GoAhead, and could not have been any happier with the service the delivered. I would basically question the sanity of anyone who said otherwise. We actually had two people from GoAhead (Shout outs to Arlena and Jamie!) on our tour, and it was a blast to have them. It was also fun to ask them about other places in the world to explore, and learn more about what GoAhead offers. They now have me considering traveling to places that I had never even thought to travel to. 2) Itinerary - They put together an awesome plan of events at each destination. The wonderful thing about GoAhead is that you don't have to participate in something if you don't want to - you're not handcuffed to anything. But I ended up participating in everything, and have zero regrets in doing so. But it made me feel comfortable to know that had the option to opt out if I wanted. And when you opt out and do something different, everyone is cool about it, it's not big deal, and your Tour Director will help you figure out how to get to wherever you're trying to go. You also have a bunch of free time so make sure you figure out how you'd like to use it in advance, and if you don't, your Tour Director can give you suggestions. 3) Hotels - I'm a bit of a brat with hotels, and I was really happy with all of our accommodations. Every place we stayed at was immaculate, and comfortable. Most of the hotels were close to the local hot spots with Hamburg being the exception. 4) People in the Tour Group - Look, you never know what you're going to get as far as people go when you sign up for a tour. I had a diverse mix of people in my group (college kids to grandparents and everything in between; one family, a good handful of couples, and a small pack of solos), and everyone got along splendidly. The beauty of it is that you have something in common with everyone, as everyone loves to travel and is looking to have a good time. As a solo traveler, I made friends quickly and was able to buddy up on every single thing that I did. 5) Tour Director - I have no idea how GoAhead finds these people, but they have it down. Our tour director was Derek, a fluent speaker of 5 languages, and easily the most cultured person I've ever met. He knew every side street to take us to (and to have us avoid) so we were making the most out of this experience. He knew how to cater to everyone's individual needs, and he did so for every person on the trip. His people skills were top notch, and the knowledge he shared was amazing... it was like having a human encyclopedia, but with charisma, and a zest for making people happy. 6) Local Guides - Some are more entertaining than others, but they all know their stuff. Our guide in London was this guy named Stuart, and was incredible. A perfect blend of entertaining and educational, and he was a blast to ask questions to and get the recent royal gossip from. Everyone loved him. 6) The Cities - I am glad we went to each place that we did. Some I like more than others, but that's to be expected. Amsterdam was my favorite. Antwerp and Hamburg were a little "meh" in my opinion, but for all I know - that could have been someone else's favorite. I would have preferred skipping Antwerp and Hamburg and adding more time onto Amsterdam and Copenhagen. 7) Transportation - I love that not once I had to think of how I wanted to get from one destination to the other as GoAhead takes care of all that for you. I will say that this particular tour is a jam packed grind, which I personally loved. But if you wanted a slower paced tour, I would look at tours with less cities. We had airplanes, subways, busses, ferries, and tons of walking. I was happy with it, but the pace of the tour was fast and that is a personal preference thing. 8) Food - Be sure to bring pants with proper elasticity because you are going to eat and drink your face off. I can literally describe Belgium in one word: carbohydrates. The only thing I wish was different was that I wish that our included dinners were at a local restaurant... make no mistake the meals were delicious, but I think it would have been great to go to a place in town instead of at the hotel, even if it meant a more casual dining experience. 9) Optionals - Stonehenge was awesome as long as you're into history and mystery; Windsor Castle was amazing; Amsterdam dinner cruise was pretty and scenic but not a make or break add on; Hamburg dinner cruise had an amazing feast (although it was at an Italian place on the water... but honestly it was a good break in the type of food, and it really was a phenomenal meal) but the cruise part wasn't my favorite because it was in German --- I still had a good time because I was hanging out with a fun group from the tour, but I'd say this was the only add on I wouldn't recommend. 10) Overall - GoAhead put together an amazing trip. I am 100% pleased with going through GoAhead, and with this particular trip. It was completely worth it, and I feel like I had an adventure of a lifetime. I can't wait to take another trip and am confident in using GoAhead and recommending them to everyone I know.
