Passport & Visa Requirements

In order to enter Iceland, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your particular entry requirements.

Baggage Allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & Packing Tips

Iceland tends to be cool and often damp at certain times of year. Loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures will probably be most comfortable. A sun hat, sunglasses and a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers are recommended for sightseeing. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality—a lightweight sports jacket and rainwear are advised. If you plan to visit an elegant restaurant or attend the opera or theater, you will probably feel more comfortable with something formal to wear. Also, remember that it is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks when traveling to Iceland. However, it is always advisable to check with your doctor or health-care provider for the latest updates.

Cuisine

Every island nation should be known for its seafood— and Iceland is no exception. Wherever you go, you’ll find the freshest fish and seafood offerings as well as many delightful Icelandic offerings.

Transportation

Flights arrive in and depart from Reykjavik. Included transportation on “Iceland: Reykjavik to the Glaciers” is by private motorcoach. In your free time, most locations are best accessed on foot.

Electricity

All destinations operate on the European standard 220 volts.

Time Zones

Iceland is one hour behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5 p.m. in Reykjavik.

Currency

The Icelandic Krona is the currency you will be using on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’scurrency, the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Outstanding Tour Director

Our Iceland tour was incredible. Not only was the scenery unbelievable and Iceland's natural wonders, but the trip was nuanced by Ingi, our tour director. His encompassing knowledge during those bus rides truly was an education about this fantastic country. He has a wonderful sense of humor and a warm and friendly personality. At our last evening meal, Ingi serenaded us with his guitar and won all of our hearts. My wife and I have already recommended this tour to others and are already planning a return visit to Iceland so we can visit other parts of this beautiful country's landscapes.

Hi Paul! We're so pleased you had an incredible time. We couldn't agree more about the stunning natural landscapes and wonders of Iceland. It's great to hear that your Tour Director took your experience to the next level with his warmth and knowledge. How wonderful that he serenaded you and your wife with his guitar! We will be sure to share your feedback with his supervisor. Thank you for your recommendation, and we can't wait to welcome you on your next tour.

Beautiful Country

We loved Iceland and enjoyed the opportunity to hike and do a lot of outside activities. Our tour director was extremely knowledgeable. If he didn't know something at the time, he did research to get the answers.

Hi Linda! We're so glad you enjoyed your time in Iceland. We're also delighted to learn that your Tour Director kept you informed throughout your tour. Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on tour again.

Needs improvement

The Fact that everyone took a red eye to get there and rooms were not ready till 4pm is totally unacceptable. When I spoke to customer service about this on my return and she turned it around and said I should have inquired before hand regarding time availablity of check in ...that was insult to injury. If a travel agency cannot think ahead about the overall comfort of the travelers then why should I book with them again? The stops were rushed. Not enough time to take in the sights when stopped It was unfortunate that the tour was over by about 5 pm. Why not schedule things to do in the evening? Especially when there is 21 hours of daylight? Even if it optional, add on activities? Very disappointing. Would really have to think about it and weigh the options before is take another tour with go ahead. 1st tour with GA. Never had any of these issues with any other tour company I traveled with.

Dear Traveler, We regret that your tour experience in Iceland did not meet your expectations. We are glad that one of our Quality Control team members was able to speak with you about your concerns, and we assure you that we have brought them to the attention of our management group. Changes to the first day of this itinerary are currently underway, as we take traveler feedback very seriously. Again, we regret that the late check-in negatively affected your overall experience, and we are working hard to improve this aspect of the tour. In terms of time allotted for each stop, we regret that you felt rushed and will be sure to communicate this to our Product Development team. Typically, we don’t structure entire days, as many of our travelers often enjoy having some time to explore on their own. We also offer optionals, which allow some flexibility in the pace and intensity of our tours. Please know that your feedback is very important to us, and we are currently working to take action on it. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your experience further, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-597-0350.

Wonderful tour

This is a really good value. You will see all the important and interesting sites in Iceland. It is a wonderful country, clean safe and interesting. Our tour guide was wonderfully warm and knowledgeable. Even though the weather was cool, it did not feel uncomfortable. And since I am happy to live in Phoenix in the summer that is saying a lot. I'm thinking I might repeat it in the winter to see the Northern Lights.

Land of Fire and Ice indeed!

Loved the tour, it was exactly as advertised. Lots of geology and a good smattering of history. We learned a great deal. I am now mesmerized with the idea of the Saga's, oral history of their people, land and government style. I would do a tour with that emphasis, story tellers, more historical sites, art, and parallels with modern times. Lots of the capital is VERY hip. Our guide Helga, was wonderful, well-educated and traveled with an obvious love for her country. Our bus driver didn't talk much but one on one we learned a lot about Iceland, football (our soccer) and the International tournament that was coming up. Because we went to some less touristy spots, I think I would have enjoyed a neighborhood geothermal pool rather than the highly advertised Blue Lagoon. Another suggestion, if you are thinking of going. They say the Northern lights are not to be missed. When it doesn't get dark (summer) no way can you see any!

Hi Valerie! We’re glad you loved your tour. You’re right that the geology and history are two very interesting aspects of Iceland. We appreciate your suggestion for a new tour and we will be sure to communicate that to our Product Development team. We’re so pleased your Tour Director shared her expertise and passion for her country with you, as well as your bus driver. We thank you for your suggestion to use a different geothermal pool, and we will consider that for future departures. Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on tour again!

Iceland is awesome!!!

My trip was wonderful from the beginning to the end... Travelled solo and with 15 of us in our group it made me easier to make friends with everyone! Our tour tour director Helga is the best and she has so much knowledge of the country since she is a Viking descendant... There is so many Good things to mention about Iceland and they're all positive... Goaheadtours made it possible to arranged everything with no problems. And with that I'm ready for another trip and I'm all booked ??

Hi Rowena! We're thrilled to hear your trip was wonderful from beginning to end. We're glad you enjoyed your smaller group size, and we're also happy to hear your Tour Director's expertise really enhanced your experience. Thank you for your review, and we can't wait to welcome you on your next tour!

I loved Iceland!

This trip was a great overview of the country. Anyone who loves beautiful scenery and natural, untouched landscapes will enjoy this trip. Go Ahead did a great job of packing in a tremendous amount of sights in a short time period. Our Tour Guide Gunnar has a true love of his country that was so expressed in all he told us about Iceland, its customs and even its elves and trolls! The hotel was in a perfect location which made meals and shopping very easy. The hotel staff was great and so was the food there. I have a few suggestions to improve on this trip. First, the title, “Reykjavik to the Glaciers” is misleading. We only saw one glacier and that was from a distance due to the weather and slippery conditions. It should be changed to something like “An Introduction to Iceland” which is really what the trip was. Second, there was only one optional excursion to go Whale Watching. Since the weather in Iceland changes so often, this excursion was cancelled. That was disappointing. It would have been nice if a rain-substitute was in place. I enjoyed shopping in Reykjavik, but would have preferred to fill that time with the opportunity to do something else in the country. Finally, there was no trip extension. Trip extensions seem to be the rule for the majority of Go Ahead tours, but not this one. Since the trip was so short, I would have loved to extend my stay there to see more of the island. Many of my tour companions felt the same way. All in all, I still recommend this trip. Iceland was beautiful!

Thank you very much for traveling with Go Ahead, and for taking the time to provide this thoughtful review. Iceland is one of our favorite destinations, and we are so glad that you loved the beautiful scenery visited. Thank you for the suggestions that you mention in your review. We are always looking for ways to improve our tours, and do so based on our traveler feedback. We are also always looking for new and exciting itinerary opportunities to offer, and have sent your feedback to our Product Development team, who are in the process of building a more extensive Iceland tour! Thank you again for sharing your observations, and we hope to welcome you onto a future Go Ahead tour!

What an Adventure!

This was a fantastic short trip !!! From the Continental Divide, to the Great Geysers, Glaciers, and Waterfalls; from the ferocious southern beach waves and black sands to the tranquil, peaceful blue waters of the Blue Lagoon, there is so much to see in Iceland. The tour director once again highlighted this trip and made it extremely enjoyable. A bit on the pricey side but totally worth it. If you have a limited amount of time and want an "out-of-the-box" experience, this is the trip for you! Thank you Go Ahead once again for an unforgettable adventure.

Unique and Beautiful

Unique and beautiful, Iceland is geological wonder-volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers, and continual drift to name a few. Iceland is at the juncture of two tectonic plates - the North American plate and the Eurasian plate. Iceland also has glaciers from which they get all of their fresh water. The only place I have visited where I was comfortable drinking the water. The hotel was centrally located. Food was great—never a bad meal. I really enjoyed the trip in spite of the wind and rain EVERY day. We were disappointed that the whale watch was canceled due to the weather but maybe next time.. Gunner, our tour director, was personable and full of knowledge. Although bad weather curtailed a few activities, we had an outstanding experience . My only wish (other than the weather) would have been to have more time at some of the spectacular locations. I would suggest that the tour be increased to an entire week. The only negative was the weather.
