Passport & Visa Requirements

In order to enter Iceland, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. The expiration date must extend at least six months beyond the date of your return home. No visa is required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your particular entry requirements.

Baggage Allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & Packing Tips

Iceland tends to be cool and often damp at certain times of year. Loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures will probably be most comfortable. A sun hat, sunglasses and a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers are recommended for sightseeing. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality—a lightweight sports jacket and rainwear are advised. If you plan to visit an elegant restaurant or attend the opera or theater, you will probably feel more comfortable with something formal to wear. Also, remember that it is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

There are no major health risks when traveling to Iceland. However, it is always advisable to check with your doctor or health-care provider for the latest updates.

Cuisine

Every island nation should be known for its seafood— and Iceland is no exception. Wherever you go, you’ll find the freshest fish and seafood offerings as well as many delightful Icelandic offerings.

Transportation

Flights arrive in and depart from Reykjavik. Included transportation on “Iceland: Reykjavik to the Glaciers” is by private motorcoach. In your free time, most locations are best accessed on foot.

Electricity

All destinations operate on the European standard 220 volts.

Time Zones

Iceland is one hour behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5 p.m. in Reykjavik.

Currency

The Icelandic Krona is the currency you will be using on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it is worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’scurrency, the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Iceland is calling

Iceland is absolutely stunning. The landscape is beautiful and much of it untouched. This was my first time to Iceland and this is the perfect tour for a first time visit. Go Ahead gives you a great overview of the main sights in Iceland. They hit all the highlights from the black sand beaches, the gorgeous waterfalls and the ethereal feeling Blue Lagoon. I would have loved to spend more time at the Blue Lagoon. It is definitely a must visit location. It is the final excursion on the tour and so insanely relaxing and beautiful. It really was the perfect way to end our tour. Our tour guide Gunnar was fantastic. He went above and beyond for the group. He had so much information and many storied to share. He even brought along his guitar and sang some folk songs during the farewell dinner. It was a great evening. I can't say enough good things about Gunnar. If you're considering going to Iceland, GO! It is amazing. And go with Go Ahead. It really was wonderful.

Hi Carol! We’re glad that you feel this itinerary hits many of the important highlights of Iceland. We can understand why you loved the Blue Lagoon and we agree that it provides a unique, ethereal experience. We appreciate your feedback on your Tour Director, and we’re glad that his stories and songs brought the culture and history of Iceland to life. Thank you for your recommendation, and we look forward to welcoming you on tour again soon!

So much fun for such a small trip!

I loved loved loved this tour! It was my third tour with goahead and it was my favorite so far! The guide was a great guy. Very helpful and informative. I thought it was such a short tour and we wouldn't have time for anything but we really did. They pack so many sights in there but you still get plenty of time to check out all of the stops and you have time to go exploring on your own as well. Overall it's a lot of fantastic put into a short amount of time. I would suggest this tour to anyone that appreciates beautiful landscapes and waterfalls/rainbows. The land of ice and fire is amazing.

Hi Amber! We’re glad to learn that your third Go Ahead tour was your favorite so far! We agree that the land of fire and ice is amazing – so much to see and explore. We’re pleased that you felt you had enough time to take it all in, as well as adequate opportunities to explore on your own. Thank you for your review, and we look forward to welcoming you on your next tour!

Windy Iceland

Great trip. One recommendation is to prepare for colder weather than the forecast due to the wind!

Iceland adventure

All in all it was a good experience despite what I will say about the hotel later. My only suggestion with respect to the tour is to consider allowing those who want to, at Thingvallir NP to walk down to the lower parking lot and be picked up by the bus there. I would have walked all the way down except for the fact that I would have then had to return to the upper parking lot. I a afraid I have nothing much good to say about the hotel. The problems began when we arrive. I had expected to wait for a room for several hours until the cleaning staff could clear some rooms but never expected to wait until almost 4 pm after arriving at the hotel about 9 am. And I was not the only one. We saw crowds of people waiting in the lobby each day. Surely they could assign the rooms as they finished cleaning them. In fact, the desk staff seemed embarrased at having to enforce the policy. Other problems included: Breakfast cold each morning, porters not available to transfer luggage when we left, no instructions for the TV or the window transom, no plug near a mirror (which forced my to get out an extension cord I always carry, plug into an inlet in the hall and shave in the bathroom. Finally, on the last day, we asked about store hours and were told they opened at 11 am. We went downtown anyway about 9 am and found almost all the stores open. So that is my story. I'd do it again but not at that hotel.

Dear Louis, We’re pleased to hear that overall you had a good time on tour. We also appreciate your suggestion regarding Thingvellir National Park and will be sure to share this with our Operations team. In terms of your hotel, we regret that it did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately, we have no influence on hotel policies. Check-in and room availability times vary from property to property, and we understand that these policies do not always align with what is most convenient in the moment. However, we will be sure to share your feedback with our hotel partner so that they are aware of the frustration you experienced, due to their check-in process. We certainly hope for every component and aspect of all of our tours to run smoothly. Regarding the other concerns you had with your hotel, we will be sure to convey these as well. However, it is important to keep in mind that hotel standards and general amenities in Iceland do generally differ from those in North America. In terms of porterage, we never actually guarantee it because in some locations it is not available. Again, we apologize for some of the concerns you had about your hotel, but we are glad that you enjoyed the trip so much that you would do it again. We appreciate that you took the time to share your experience, and we hope to welcome you on another Go Ahead tour.

66 degrees

Over all fantastic tour. For the price, could have included another day. Many members of our group came early or stayed on. Amazing sights and experiences. Personally, not a fan of fish nor mutton, but substitutes were provided. Others who enjoy that type of food loved it. Helga, our tour director, was extremely helpful dealing with a credit card crisis. Waiting for my departing flight, I discovered I'd left my credit card at a local store--that darn 'chip'! Helga checked with the store, the store had the card . Helga was able to provide 'peace of mind' prior to my departure. Thank you so much. Helga is a knowledgeable and personable guide. I travel just about anywhere with under her guidance.

My Review

The trip was overall outstanding. Some of the days were long, but that was all right because we got to see a lot in a few days. The tour director, Helga, did an excellent job. She was very friendly and kept everyone on schedule. The driver did an excellent job. Food throughout Iceland was somewhat expensive, but we expected it would be. There was a bit of difficult walking, but one could see the water falls and beach without making the longer walks. I would recommend the trip to anyone interested in Iceland.

Hi Beverly! We're so pleased that you would describe this tour as outstanding. It sounds like you were able to maximize your time in Iceland and take in the beauty of the island. You're right that food prices tend to be higher, as many things have to be imported. We appreciate your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you on tour again!

A Taste of Iceland

Arrived in Iceland directly off a Go Ahead Tour trip in Ireland. We were two days early so we rented a car and did some independent exploring. An easy country to navigate with so many friendly people. We'll do that again but I digress. We met up with the tour at the hotel right on time and toured the simple, safe, and curious city of Reykavik. The guide, Gunnar, was exceptional in his knowledge and presentation of his city. The first day was short because it was a travel day which I think was appreciated. Day two was the best only because we hadn't experienced days 3 and 4 yet for they were also to be terrific. The day of the Golden Circle was filled with gorgeous and unique scenery seasoned with the guides historical and geological/geographical knowledge. The falls and geysers were spectacularly breath taking but the area where the mid-Atlantic Ridge is ripping apart was so interesting and beautiful in its own way. Day 2 to the southern region was just as beautiful with new and different scenery around every corner. Ample time was given to explore but if given 60 minutes more in each area, it could never have been enough. The museum visited was simple but oh so interesting as it presented the development of this very civilized and strong people. It was a very long day but if it was longer it would have been just fine. The final day provided local area shopping time and a trip to the Blue Lagoon. Glad I went but I feel going once is enough. I do recommend it heartily. The break up dinner was very nice....particularly with our guide bringing along his guitar and singing us several Icelandic folk songs. So memorable. The hotel was very comfortable and ideally located in downtown. This tour could be longer and when it is I will go again, but I am not sure I can wait too long for this is a gorgeous, vibrant country and the people are the same. Great tour and highly recommended!

Hi Daniel! We appreciate your detailed review. It’s wonderful to learn that you enjoyed beautiful Iceland and that your Tour Director’s expertise added value to your experience. You certainly saw some incredible parts of the country, such as the Golden Circle. The landscapes of Iceland are truly unique and breathtaking! We appreciate your suggestion to make this tour longer, and we will be sure to share it with our Product Development team. We understand that you simply can’t have enough time on this gorgeous island. Thank you again for your review. Let us know when you’re ready to go back!

Outstanding Tour Director

Our Iceland tour was incredible. Not only was the scenery unbelievable and Iceland's natural wonders, but the trip was nuanced by Ingi, our tour director. His encompassing knowledge during those bus rides truly was an education about this fantastic country. He has a wonderful sense of humor and a warm and friendly personality. At our last evening meal, Ingi serenaded us with his guitar and won all of our hearts. My wife and I have already recommended this tour to others and are already planning a return visit to Iceland so we can visit other parts of this beautiful country's landscapes.

Hi Paul! We're so pleased you had an incredible time. We couldn't agree more about the stunning natural landscapes and wonders of Iceland. It's great to hear that your Tour Director took your experience to the next level with his warmth and knowledge. How wonderful that he serenaded you and your wife with his guitar! We will be sure to share your feedback with his supervisor. Thank you for your recommendation, and we can't wait to welcome you on your next tour.

Beautiful Country

We loved Iceland and enjoyed the opportunity to hike and do a lot of outside activities. Our tour director was extremely knowledgeable. If he didn't know something at the time, he did research to get the answers.

Hi Linda! We're so glad you enjoyed your time in Iceland. We're also delighted to learn that your Tour Director kept you informed throughout your tour. Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on tour again.
