Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.  Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height).  Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Baggage handling

Please note that porter service cannot be guaranteed on the trains from London to Paris, Paris to Amsterdam and Venice to Rome. Please be prepared to handle your own baggage.

Clothing & packing tips

To ensure you’re comfortable while out exploring, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight sports jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please remember that it’s preferable to avoid showing bare legs or shoulders during visits to churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

There are no major health risks when traveling to England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland or Italy. Be sure to check with your doctor or health care provider for the latest updates and overseas travel requirements.

You’ll have the opportunity to taste a wide variety of cuisines on this tour. In London, reasonably priced traditional fare can be found at local pubs (Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, haggis and Cumberland sausages). French cuisine is a national (and international) obsession, done with style and flair. Croissants and café au lait begin the day, followed by delicacies such as foie gras, pâté, escargot and truffles. French wines and coffees are some of the finest in the world. Traditional Dutch cuisine is hearty fare, primarily based on meat, potatoes and stew. The Dutch are known for cheeses such as Gouda, Edam and Leyden. Swiss food, influenced by surrounding countries, is varied and sophisticated; the most famous local dish is fondue, made from molten cheese, flavored with wine, garlic and liquor, into which pieces of skewered bread are dipped. Cuisine varies by region in Italy—in Lombardy, you’ll find rice dishes such as risotto, while pastas such as spaghetti all’ amatriciana are more common around Rome.

Round-trip flights arrive in London and depart from Rome (or Florence on extension). When you first arrive in London, a Go Ahead representative will meet you at the airport. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative may be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival. Included transportation is by train and private deluxe motor coach.

England uses 240 volts. All other destinations operate on the European standard 220 volts.

Time zones

The British pound, euro and Swiss franc are the currencies you’ll use on your tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in your destination country, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We advise that you take credit cards and ATM/bank cards. We suggest informing your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so they don’t confuse your purchases for fraudulent charges.

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/ CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Wonderful Tour Director

I loved the Grand Tour of Europe. My tour director, Derek, was absolutely wonderful. He made sure that we all had a great experience, and attended to the needs of each individual as was needed. I appreciate the extra excursions and opportunities we had, that really added depth and that "extra layer" of experiences that we might not have been able to do on any other trip. I felt that my expectations were met and beyond. I'd love to go on another tour and would hope that Derek could be my tour director again.

What a Great Tour/Time!!

My wife Lisa and I recently returned from the "Grand Tour of Europe". Lisa had visited many if not all of the locations, but this was a first for me. Arriving at Heathrow we were met by a kind and professional driver who took us to our hotel in London. Meeting our tour director "John" and our fellow travelers was fantastic and overall the rapport we had with our group made the trip very special. Each location and hotel that we stayed and visited was incredible. The pace of travel and the visits were relatively quick, but the way John orchestrated our movements and connections made it transparent. The guides that we met during our individual tours were outstanding and I learned so much more than if we had attempted to do this on our own. There were just too many beautiful sites and experiences to list but overall this was a trip of a lifetime. To be honest we had never considered taking a "tour" but after this we will be a regular customer of Go Ahead. Our thanks to John our tour director and to our fellow travelers that made this experience on that will always be cherished

BEST experience with my mom!

Having been on an EF tour before, I did not hesitate choosing Go Ahead to travel Europe with my mother. She had never traveled abroad, and it was so wonderful to share this experience with her and see it through her eyes. Our tour director, Marcellus, went above AND beyond to make our experience memorable. The attention to detail on this tour is superb. The ability to pay installments was a nice perk especially when you are on a teacher salary! I catch myself daydreaming in my classroom thinking about to all of the wonderful destinations we were able to see. Book a tour! You will NOT be disappointed!

Locked Loo

Would have liked to have known iconic places in France would be drive by. Didn't get off bus to see Eiffel Lourve or Notra Dam. For a guided tour would have thought we would have been taken to these places. Instead we had to go out on our own then got robbed. To have spent so much time on bus without using bathroom was just plain barbaric! It stayed locked the entire time. If you pay extra for single room you get shafted compared to double rooms mine were facing kitchens over garbage....

Dear Nicolle, Thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us about your experience in Europe. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn your perspective of our on-tour experience. We understand that there were aspects of this tour that did not meet your expectations, and we regret that these components had a negative effect on your time abroad. Our guided sightseeing tours are designed to be overviews of the cities visited, during which, our travelers can become acquainted with the geography and history. Our Tour Directors are knowledgeable and trained to provide support and instructions for those looking to visit places of interest throughout the cities. There are laws in Europe that prohibit the use of restrooms in moving vehicles. We are sorry if this was not communicated to you effectively, and will work to ensure that our travelers moving forward understand the legality of this policy. We regret to learn that your hotel rooms did not meet your expectations. We are constantly monitoring the performance of all our hotels based on feedback we get from our travelers. We have shared your feedback with our operations team, and will continue to work to provide our travelers with the best rooms possible. We work hard to remain aware of our travelers’ perceptions, and to make changes to our tours where possible to improve them. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you onto a future Go Ahead tour.

Derek excellent tour director

Europe in 16 days was definitely fast pace as described. But thanks to the excellent orchestration of travel and tour details by TOUR DIRECTORl, this trip was a dream come true. Derek went over and beyond to make every minute of the trip memorable, especially with the extremely high level of cultural and historical knowledge of every part of the trip. I would definitely travel again using Go Ahead Tours, which was excellently represented by Derek.

Derek was the best ever! He made sure everyone was taken care of at all times. He also had additional excursions if you didn't want to venture out on your own. I highly recommend doing the add on excursions! When we do another tour, we will request to have Derek again. I cannot tell you how wonderful he was. He spoke 5 different languages so he was able to communicate with everyone in every country we visited.
