Dear traveler,

Welcome to Go Ahead Tours! I've just returned from Rome where I met with many of our Tour Directors, and it was really lovely to spend time with old friends, many whom I've known since my own Tour Directing days. Inevitably, we talked a lot about their experiences leading tours. We spoke about the joys of seeing our guests experience the spark of wanderlust on tour that renewed sense of wonder and curiosity about the world—and of discovering how a country or a new experience on tour can subtly influence travelers.

As you can imagine, Tour Directors are a source of some truly uplifting travel stories, but among all the inspiring stories I heard, one in particular stuck with me the most. David Macchi, a father, lifelong historian and avid soccer fan, was leading a tour through his native Italy, and he decided, as he often does on tour, to share something else with his travelers as well.

For over eight years, David had studied opera, and during every tour he leads, he loves nothing more than singing for his travelers. On this occasion, David chose to sing the Neapolitan song Torna a Surriento and a few arias by Giuseppe Verdi, his favorite composer. One guest was so moved that she asked for one of his CDs to take home with her. She was heading home to face surgery, and wanted to know that David's voice would be with her in the operating room. As David said, "How many jobs give you the opportunity to be so special to people?"

This is just one of the many stories I heard in Rome, stories of experiences that are so special to our guests: stories of making lifelong friends, and of finding moments and connections that transcend space and time. These experiences add something magical to a Go Ahead tour—something which lasts long after you get back home.
